Del Rio and the Jaguars visited Philadelphia on Sunday and defeated the Eagles 13-6. With quarterback David Garrard starting in place of the injured Byron Leftwich, Del Rio relied on the running game to move the football. Running backs Fred Taylor and Maurice Jones-Drew combined for 180 yards and one touchdown on 36 carries, and Garrard added 8 carries for 36 yards. The Jacksonville defense applied pressure to Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb all day, sacking him four times, and held Philadelphia to 227 total yards of offense. Del Rio was selected as Motorola NFL Coach of the Week from among three finalists by voters on NFL.com. The other finalists were head coaches BRIAN BILLICK of the Baltimore Ravens and TONY DUNGY of the Indianapolis Colts. In January, voting will be held on NFL.com to determine the Motorola NFL Coach of the Year. Two of my favorite quotes are, one by John Wooden, “A good coach can change a game, a great coach can change a life” and another by Billy Graham, “A coach will impact more young people in a year than an average person does in a lifetime.” So as a coach, you must realize that with being a coach comes great responsibility. If you want to be a suc - cessful coach you have to ask yourself several questions. Drew Potthoff • Am I building athletes up with the way I coach or am I tearing them down? Executive Secretary • Is my main focus of coaching on winning games or developing young athletes? Illinois Coaches • Am I more concerned with my program, the strength program, my summer program than with the academic Association success and the development of the whole athlete in my program? • Will my influence on my athletes transcend beyond the win-loss record? As coaches, we must always be self-assessing the way we coach and our priorities. The coaching profession demands that we be life- long learners, not only with the aspects of our sport but with how we are building our athletes in all aspects of their lives. The twelve-minute test, which measures “cognitive ability,” has been shown to have a disparate impact on minorities in various employment situations. This Note contends that the NFL’s use of the Wonderlic also has a disparate impact because of its effect on a player’s draft status and ultimately his salary. The test cannot be justified by business necessity because there is no correlation between a player’s Wonderlic score and their on-field performance. As such, this Note calls for the creation of a football-specific intelligence test that would be less likely to have a disparate impact than the Wonderlic, while also being sufficiently job-related and more reliable in predicting a player’s success.
