RESUMO Neste trabalho, contribuímos com pesquisas originais sobre a anatomia e taxonomia de pterossauros provenientes do Grupo Santana (Cretáceo Inferior, Bacia do Araripe, Nordeste do Brasil). Além disso, revisamos aspectos taxonômicos e filogenéticos do clado e a geologia do Grupo Santana é descrita a partir de uma abrangente revisão bibliográfica. A origem de Pterosauria e suas relações filogenéticas com demais tetrápodes é abordada, explicitando a tendência atual de considerar estes arcossauros como grupo-irmão de Dinosauromorpha no clado Ornithodira. As relações filogenéticas internas de Pterosauria são discutidas através da apresentação de dados das principais análises cladísticas propostas para o grupo. As relações filogenéticas de táxons provenientes do Grupo Santana são tratadas em maior detalhe, principalmente no que tange o debate sobre a monofilia ou parafilia de Tapejaridae. É realizada, também, uma revisão taxonômica detalhada e atualizada, destacando todos os táxons válidos de pterossauros do Grupo Santana. Neste trabalho, reconhecemos 27 espécies como válidas. Três trabalhos científicos originais são apresentados. No primeiro, revisamos as atribuições taxonômicas do espécime descrito como “Pricesaurus megalodon”, concluindo que este possui afinidades a Anhangueridae, em especial, ao gênero Anhanguera. No segundo trabalho, descrevemos um espécime incomum, constituído por um palato fragmentário, tentativamente atribuído a Azhdarchoidea. Em adição, contribuímos na compreensão da anatomia e evolução do palato de Pterodactyloidea, reconhecendo tendências evolutivas até então não descritas para o grupo. No terceiro e último trabalho, reavaliamos um espécime de pterossauro da Formação Romualdo, anteriormente atribuído a Anhanguera santanae, concluindo que este, na verdade, representa um táxon ainda não descrito de Anhangueridae. A ecologia de pterossauros anhanguerídeos da Formação Romualdo é discutida, principalmente no que diz respeito à presença aparentemente simultânea de várias espécies que possivelmente compartilhariam o mesmo nicho ecológico. ABSTRACT We contribute, in this work, with original research on the anatomy and taxonomy of pterosaurs from the Santana Group (Lower Cretaceous, Araripe Basin, northeastern Brazil). Also, some taxonomic and phylogenetic aspects of pterosaurs are reassessed, and the geology of the Santana Group is described through a comprehensive literature revision. Pterosaur origins and its phylogenetic relationships with other tetrapods are discussed, detailing the current tendency to consider these archosaurs as the sister group of Dinosauromorpha, within the clade Ornithodira. Moreover, the internal phylogenetic relationships of Pterosauria are presented and discussed through the analysis of the main cladistic studies of this group. Phylogenetic relationships of Santana Group taxa are addressed in detail, especially regarding the debate on the monophyly or paraphyly of Tapejaridae. Furthermore, we conduct a detailed and updated taxonomic revision, depicting all the valid Santana Group pterosaur taxa. We recognize, on this work, 27 species as valid. Three original papers are presented. On the first one, we review the taxonomic affinities of “Pricesaurus megalodon”, concluding that this specimen has affinities with Anhangueridae, especially with the genus Anhanguera. On the second paper, we describe an unusual pterosaur palate, tentatively attributed to Azhdarchoidea. In addition, we contribute on the anatomy and evolution of the pterodactyloid palate, recognizing evolutionary trends that were never described for the clade. We reappraise, on the third paper, a pterosaur specimen from the Romualdo Formation that was formerly attributed to Anhanguera santanae, concluding that the material represents a yet undescribed anhanguerid. The ecology of anhanguerid pterosaurs from the Romualdo Formation is discussed, especially with respect to the apparent coexistence of several species that possibly shared the same ecological niche.     CORE Metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk Provided by Repository of the Academy's Library 1 Feeding related characters in basal pterosaurs: implications for jaw mechanism, dental function and diet RH: Feeding related characters in pterosaurs Attila Ősi A comparative study of various feeding related features in basal pterosaurs reveals a significant change in feeding strategies during the early evolutionary history of the group. These features are related to the skull architecture (e.g. quadrate morphology and orientation, jaw joint), dentition (e.g. crown morphology, wear patterns), reconstructed adductor musculature, and postcranium. The most basal pterosaurs (Preondactylus, dimorphodontids and anurognathids) were small bodied animals with a wing span no greater than 1.5 m, a relatively short, lightly constructed skull, straight mandibles with a large gape, sharply pointed teeth and well developed external adductors. The absence of extended tooth wear excludes complex oral food processing and indicates that jaw closure was simply orthal. Features of these basalmost forms indicate a predominantly insectivorous diet. Among stratigraphically older but more derived forms (Eudimorphodon, Carniadactylus, Caviramus) complex, multicusped teeth allowed the consumption of a wider variety of prey via a more effective form of food processing. This is supported by heavy dental wear in all forms with multicusped teeth. Typical piscivorous forms occurred no earlier than the Early Jurassic, and are characterized by widely spaced, enlarged procumbent teeth forming a fish grab and an anteriorly inclined quadrate that permitted only a relatively small gape. In addition, the skull became more elongate and body size 2 increased. Besides the dominance of piscivory, dental morphology and the scarcity of tooth wear reflect accidental dental occlusion that could have been caused by the capturing or seasonal consumption of harder food items.

KELLNER* ABSTRACT Jurassic African pterosaur remains are exceptionally rare and only known from the Tendaguru deposits, Upper Jurassic, Tanzania. Here we describe two right humeri of Tendaguru pterosaurs from the Humboldt University of Berlin: specimens MB.R. 2828 (cast MN 6661-V) and MB.R. 2833 (cast MN 6666-V). MB.R. 2828 consists of a three- dimensionally preserved proximal portion. The combination of the morphological features of the deltopectoral crest not observed in other pterosaurs suggests that this specimen belongs to a new dsungaripteroid taxon. MB.R. 2833 is nearly complete, and because of a long and round proximally placed deltopectoral crest it could be referred to the Archaeopterodactyloidea. It is the smallest pterosaur from Africa and one of the smallest flying reptiles ever recorded. These specimens confirm the importance of the Tendaguru deposits for the Jurassic pterosaur record. Fitch, Feimin Ma, and Xing Xu ABSTRACT A new genus and species of istiodactylid pterosaur, Luchibang xingzhe gen. et sp. nov., from the Lower Cretaceous Yixian Formation of China is erected based on a near complete specimen lacking only the posterior of the skull and the tail. The holotype individual is skeletally immature and already bigger than most istiodactylids suggesting a large wingspan at adult. This is the most complete istiodactylid specimen known to date and provides new information on the anatomy of this group and their putative ecology.     NEWS IN FOCUS of fossil sales and loss of cultural heritage, says Alexander Kellner, a palaeontologist at the National Museum of Brazil, part of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. Authorities, for example, were quick to act last month when the online auction site eBay listed a Brazilian BRAZIL FEDERAL POLICE pterosaur for sale at US$262,000. The auction, by French company Geofossiles, closed without sale, and Brazilian and international police are reportedly investigating the case. Brazil could ask France to repatriate the fossil if authorities can prove that it was found in the country. Researchers say that the loss of fossils has seriously harmed Brazilian science. For instance, in findings presented at the 7th Bra- zilian Symposium of Vertebrate Palaeontology in 2010, Marcos Sales, a palaeontologist at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul in Porto Alegre, found that 14 of the 24 reference specimens, or holotypes, of pterosaur fossils collected in the Araripe Basin were housed by foreign institutions. Rare fossils, such as this pterosaur from Brazil’s Araripe Basin, are regularly seized by authorities. The issue is not unique to Brazil. Other countries that list fossils as national prop- PALAEONTOLOGY erty and prohibit their export, such as China, Mongolia and Morocco, are increasingly enforcing their own laws. Anhanguerids comprise an important clade of pterosaurs, mostly known from dozens of three-dimensionally preserved specimens recovered from the Lower Cretaceous Romualdo Formation (northeastern Brazil). They are remarkably diverse in this sedimentary unit, with eight named species, six of them belonging to the genus Anhanguera. However, such diversity is likely overestimated, as these species have been historically diagnosed based on subtle differences, mainly based on the shape and position of the cranial crest. In spite of that, recently discovered pterosaur taxa represented by large numbers of individuals, including juveniles and adults, as well as presumed males and females, have crests of sizes and shapes that are either ontogenetically variable or sexually dimorphic. Methods. We describe in detail the skull of one of the most complete specimens referred to Anhanguera, AMNH 22555, and use it as a case study to review the diversity of anhanguerids from the Romualdo Formation. In order to accomplish that, a geometric morphometric analysis was performed to assess size-dependent characters with respect to the premaxillary crest in the 12 most complete skulls bearing crests that are referred in, or related to, this clade, almost all of them analyzed first hand. Results. A phylogenetic analysis indicates that the Tapejaridae is a monophyletic group of pterodactyloid pterosaurs, diagnosed by the following synapomorphies: premaxillary sagittal crest that starts at the anterior tip of the premaxilla and extends posteriorly after the occipital region, large nasoantorbital fenestra that reaches over 45% of the length between premaxilla and squamosal, lacrimal process of the jugal thin, distinct small pear- shaped orbit with lower portion narrow, and broad tubercle at the ventroposterior margin of the coracoid. Several cranial and postcranial characters indicate that the Tapejaridae are well nested within the Tapejaroidea, in sister group relationship with the Azhdarchidae. A preliminary study of the ingroup relationships within the Tapejaridae shows that Tupuxuara is more closely related to Thalassodromeus relative to Tapejara. At present tape- jarid remains have been found in the following deposits: Crato and Romualdo members of the Santana Formation (Aptian-Albian), Araripe Basin, Brazil; Jiufotang Formation (Aptian), Jehol Group of western Liaoning, China; and in the redbeds (Cenomanian) of the Kem Kem region, Morocco. An incomplete skull found in the Javelina Formation (Maastrichtian), Texas also shows several tapejarid features and might be a member of this clade. Although information is still limited, the present distribution of the Tapejaridae indicates that this clade of pterosaurs was not exclusive of Gondwana, and was more widespread than previously known.
