Airlines Association of Southern Africa (AASA) The Airlines Association of Southern Africa (AASA), is an organisation which was formed in 1970 to represent the mutual interests of its Members. Membership is open to all airlines based in countries south of the equator, including the Indian Ocean Islands. There are currently 20 Airline Members. In addition, Associate Membership is open to airline partner organisations. There are currently 37 Associate Members, including infrastructure service providers, several oil companies, major aircraft manufacturers, engine manufacturers, ground handling companies, service providers, other industry associations and partners. AASA is the representative airline organisation within Southern Africa working together with the leaders of the aviation industry and senior public and government officials on matters of policy, legislation, regulation, planning, operational efficiency, safety, security and finance, affecting the overall profitability of the airlines and their continued sustainability. AASA also leads and coordinates the airline industry position on airport, airspace and civil aviation issues, as well as consumer legislation, environmental and tourism matters, and provides media response to important industry issues. AASA’s responsibility includes the representation of SADC-based airlines on the SADC Civil Aviation Committee as the Airline Consultative Member. AASA is a regular participant and contributor to the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and International Air Transport Association (IATA) initiatives in the region. With AASA’s focus concentrated on any issue impacting the airline business, the regular liaison and good working relationship with its Members and partners is highly valued. -

Identificazione e affidabilità delle aerolinee nell’odierno scenario del trasporto aereo Stante la difficoltà di “conoscere” l’aerolinea con cui si volerà, può almeno l’utente avere la certezza che le autorità preposte abbiano svolto idonea opera di vaglio e controllo? Uno dei principali problemi con cui oggi si deve confrontare l’utente del trasporto aereo è indubbiamente costituito dall’identità del vettore che si prenderà carico di trasportarlo alla sua destinazione. Una volta, fino a qualche anno fa, questo problema davvero non esisteva. In Italia in particolare, chi decideva di volare sapeva abbastanza di Alitalia, Itavia, Meridiana per poter prendere con cognizione di causa la sua decisione; parlare di scelta del vettore sarebbe errato, in quanto i collegamenti che questi operatori esercitavano raramente erano in sovrapposizione e come tali in concorrenza fra loro. Ma oggi il problema è molto peggiorato e usando questi termini non necessariamente intendiamo far riferimento all’aspetto della safety, che pure ha la sua valenza, quanto all’altro argomento assai più elementare di conoscere, nel senso di aver almeno sentito parlare del vettore che ci porterà a destinazione. L’esempio più eclatante di quanto stiamo dicendo è dato dal recente caso della Flash Air e dell’incidente di Sharm El Sheikh. Non fraintendiamo: abbiamo già scritto e ripetiamo anche in questa occasione, che fintanto che la commissione di inchiesta non conclude la sua indagine è assolutamente sbagliato –come purtroppo è accaduto- sparare a zero a priori contro la compagnia aerea. Il discorso vale per questo come per ogni altro malaugurato incidente che si dovesse verificare. -

«Alliance membership impact on the Russian aviation market» Research Paper Master degree in Economics at University of Barcelona Submitted by: Roman Safronov Advisors: Xavier Fageda, Joan Calzada Abstract: This paper examines the impact of airline alliances on supply in the Russian aviation market. We use the difference-in-differences model to analyze the causal relationship between being a member of the alliance community agreements, and the number of seats and flight frequency offered at the route level. Furthermore, this paper is aimed to find out differences between private-owned and public-owned firms performances in the alliance. Using data on the international flights from European to Russian cities corresponding to the period 2002-2019, theoretical explanations on changes in number of seats are empirically tested. Our results show that the traffic growth is concentrated in dense routes. We also find that the positive impact of alliances is centered on a private S7 Airlines, while we do not find a positive effect for Aeroflot, a state-owned airline that is the largest operator in Russia. Alliances became common in the early 1990s, after KLM and Northwest Airlines signed in 1989 a large-scale code-share agreement that is considered as the beginning of the global strategic alliances era. Travelers received a possibility to organize a trip on a single designated code for the first time in aviation history from many points via Amsterdam, likewise to and from a plenty of locations beyond Detroit (Wickson, 2017). -

We find that the intensity of competition has a negative impact on airports’ efficiency in Italy during the 2005–2008 period. This implies that airports belonging to a local air transportation system where competition is strong exploit their inputs less intensively than do airports with local monopoly power. Furthermore, we find that public airports are more efficient than private and mixed ones. Since public airports take into account the positive externalities created by air transportation in the local economy, they are more willing to subsidize airlines in developing the airports’ connections. Hence, policy makers should provide incentives to implement airports’ specialization in local systems where competition is strong. Moreover, when regulating airport charges, they should take into account the impact of the above externalities. 13.2.2009 EN Official Journal of the European Union C 36/11 Commission notice pursuant to Article 18a(3)(a) of Directive 2003/87/EC Preliminary list of aircraft operators and their administering Member States (Text with EEA relevance) (2009/C 36/10) Pursuant to Directive 2003/87/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of 13 October 2003 establishing a scheme for greenhouse gas emission allowance trading within the Community (1), as amended by Directive 2008/101/EC (2), aviation activities of aircraft operators that operate flights arriving at and departing from Community aerodromes are included in the scheme for greenhouse gas emission allowance trading within the Community as of 1 January 2012. Member States are obliged to ensure compliance of aircraft operators with the requirements of Directive 2003/87/EC. In order to reduce the administrative burden on aircraft operators, the Directive provides for one Member State to be responsible for each aircraft operator. Article 18a(1) and (2) of the Directive provides for the rules governing the assignment of each aircraft operator to its administering Member State. In accordance with those provisions, Member States are responsible for aircraft operators which were issued with an operating licence in accordance with the provisions of Council Regulation (EEC) No 2407/92 in that Member State, or aircraft operators without an operating licence or from third countries whose emis- sions in the base year are mostly attributable to that Member State. Article 18a(3)(a) of the Directive requires the Commission to publish a list of aircraft operators which performed an aviation activity listed in Annex I of the Directive on or after 1 January 2006 specifying the administering Member State for each aircraft operator.
