Euromaidan and Crimean Discourse Analysis Media’s symbolic power: RT and The Guardian' discursive construction of the EuroMaidan2013 ‐ protests and Crimean annexation 2012 By Tomé Filipe Gaspar Jorge July 2014 A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of: Master of Arts in Culture Communication and Globalization – International Relations and the Global Order Thesis supervisor - Julia Zhukova Klausen lb Abstract Media, through its discourse has the power to create meaning and thus shape the perception of the issues it chooses to portray. Therefore, analysing the display of the competing interpretations on a particular subject should be an important aspect of academic research in order to balance the uneven distribution of power between discourse producers and its consumers. Moreover, it will lead to a better understanding of how discourse is intentionally shaped and its implications on the generation of widely accessible meaning which can potentially influence the minds of a global audience. Therefore, this thesis explores the particular discourses of two online transnational media, The Guardian (theguardian.com) and RT (rt.com), regarding the two subsequent recent events in Ukraine: the EuroMaidan protests and the referendum and annexation of Crimea by Russia, and their discursive strategies for meaning creation. Moreover, as two widely reported events which have reached a global audience, these two acknowledgedly ideologically different discourses will purportedly have different takes on these, particularly on its protagonists and their reasons: Ukrainians (including ethnic Russians and Russophobes), and Ukrainian and Russian authorities. Moreover, through the use of the theoretical and methodological fields of Critical Discourse Analysis, Semiotics, and Multimodality, applied on the analysis of a data corpus acquired through the emulation of an online search on google.com, I have explored, discussed and compared the discursive strategies used by both sources, and uncovered its meaning creation strategies and implications. I found clear signs of biased and stereotypical discursive practices revealing ideological inclinations (The Guardian – pro-Europe and pro-West, and RT – pro- Russia and pro-East). On the one hand, during the EuroMaidan protests, The Guardian portrayed the protesters as a relatively uniform group of symbolic heroes whose main reason for demonstrating was a willingness to be European and thus evolving in to a more developed state of an idealised west. Moreover, it demonised Ukrainian and Russian authorities as symbolic villains who bloc the demonstrators legitimate path. On the other hand, RT portrayed the protesters as a uniform and violent group perpetrating unnecessary violence, and whose reasons for demonstrating are discursively delegitimised. Moreover, authorities, Ukrainian officials and politicians are portrayed as victims of these overly violent protesters. Regarding the Crimean annexation and referendum, both sources adopted opposing ideological stands. On the one hand, The Guardian, demonstrated to be pro-west, particularly pro-United States, were the US is seen as all powerful and ensuring Ukraine’s rights as in a father figure. On the other hand, RT showed a pro-Russian ideology in which the West sanctions are considered unfair because the referendum is a democratic and legitimate tool to fix a mistake done during the Soviet Era. Moreover, RT’s discourse revealed an underlying imperial ideology in its discourse, in which Russia should come back to its natural state as a great world power. Overall, both The Guardian and RT, overlooked significant contextual factors, thus giving place to an oversimplification which often led to objectifying and creation of otherness in a dichotomy of ‘US’ vs ‘Them’. The work performed on this thesis as led to the uncovering of both sources’ discursive strategies and helped expose deeper and underlying intentions manifested through discourse. Moreover, if these are assimilated as true by a particular audience, it will lead to a one sided perspective of the events and its participants. Finally, by having a critical eye on media’s discourse, it has allowed for a better understanding of its mechanics and thus the viewing its discourse as a perspective influenced by external and internal factors. This primary social revolution was followed by value and paradigmatic shifts, middle class revolution, and a struggle for human rights, equality, justice, and prosperity. This study examines values and social structure of the Euromaidan. In addition to ethnographic study consisting of participant observations and informal interviewing, data from European Social Survey (2010-2013) and face-to-face survey conducted by an initiative group of sociologists on Maidan were used in order to approach this goal. Results of the study show that values of the Euromaidan (Universalism, Benevolence, Self-Direction, Stimulation, and Security) coincide more with European values, especially those of developed Western and Scandinavian countries, than Ukrainian ones. Carroll Warren Alpert School of Medicine at Brown University, OCRid: 0000-0001-5711-7419 Abstract. This article explores the counter-narratives launched against Ukrainian popular and nationalist causes in 2013 and 2014. It engages with semiotic and visual anthropological theory to articulate how these counter narratives are designed and how they are meant to work. Many pro-Russian acts of propaganda and provocations made use of the specific iconography with which Maidan was branded and its participants were branded in public imagination. This tactic amounted to blatant mimicry, and it appeared in countless forms from Anti-Maidan ‘stickering’ campaigns in Kyiv’s Mariinsky Park to Russian soldiers posing as local ‘self defense brigades’ in Crimea. While this visual imitation may appear simple and straightforward, I argue that highly sophisticated semiotic techniques were used to disrupt the interpretation of photographic images. This technique exploits the fluidity of what Roland Barthes calls ‘the third meaning’ of images for the purpose of granting the appearance of legitimacy to politically motivated counter narratives. The impact is very significant and concerns such sensitive aspects of human rights as the language of education and language quotas in the media. On September 28, 2017 a new law “On Education” came into force in this country.1 The most acute problem with this law is the question of the language of education in Ukraine. The law introduces an actual ban on education in any language other than Ukrainian. From 2018, the teaching of subjects in the languages of national minorities will only be available in elementary schools. Four hundred thousand children will not be able to receive education in their native language. From grade 5, the teaching of subjects in the languages of national minorities is almost completely eliminated. As of 2020, education in Ukraine will exclusively in Ukrainian. Only subjects such as foreign languages, literature, and folklore will be taught in the languages of national minorities. 17 per cent of Ukrainian citizens are Russians, 0.5 per cent are Belarusians, Moldovans and Crimean Tatars. Under these conditions, the denial of the right to study in their native language in schools means depriving millions of Ukrainian citizens of basic human rights. More than 20 per cent of Ukrainian citizens are not ethnic Ukrainians, and for more than a third of Ukrainian citizens Ukrainian is not their native language.

There is probably no person nowadays who wouldn’t have heard the name of Oleg Sentsov, as his court trial was really a cause célèbre and his verdict was quite exceptional and unbelievably harsh: twenty years behind the bars. Movie director, screenwriter, and writer, he was accused of an apparent participation in the terrorist activities. And despite all the public protests and multiple addresses to the government of the country that accuses Sentsov, he still remains imprisoned. This book consists of the memoirs of people who knew Oleg very well, of the fragments of his books and film scenarios, and also of the extracts of the protocols of the testimonials of the witnesses in this totally fabricated case. This book also contains many photographs, both from the personal home archives of Sentsov and from the courtroom. However, as his friends and relatives claim, Sentsov never really liked talking about himself, but his work speaks for him, and first of all his autobiographical novels and essays.
