Recent years have seen the emergence of a new approach to the study of rural Catholicism in China. By closely examining the specific circumstances of local society, and taking seriously the beliefs and biases of individual actors, schol- ars such as Eugenio Menegon and Henrietta Harrison have moved the study of Chinese Catholicism beyond its previous fixation on moments of crisis such as the Rites Controversy, and come to embrace Catholicism as a Chinese local religion.1 New works by Anthony Clark and Ji Li represent another step in this very welcome trend. In essa il carnefice doveva infliggere mille e mille ferite e mutilazioni alla vittima in modo da non estinguerne la vita sino al colpo di grazia inferto al cuore; b- la decapitazione, rapidamente ed abilmente eseguita ovvero il Taglio della testa (detto anche “decapitazione” o “decollazione”). Il condannato, sovente con le braccia e le mani incatenate e con i ferri alle caviglie, viene legato ad un palo, o posto con il collo su di un ceppo di legno. Il boia colpisce quindi con una spadone ovvero con una sciabola pesante ed a lama larga sulla parte posteriore del collo. La morte avviene per via della rottura del midollo spinale con il primo colpo. Con un secondo colpo viene approfondito il taglio ma senza recidere necessariamente i vasi del collo: la testa può pertanto restare attaccata al busto. Il tempo è lo stesso che per la ghigliottina. Queste le differenze dalla decapitazione normale. When the Sino-Western conflicts of the Boxer Uprising had reached their climax in 1900, the Shanxi Confucian, Liu Dapeng, penned a vivid account of the turbulence around his studio. In his Qianyuan suoji, Liu described the theatrical ceremonies of the Boxers who summoned the gods to possess their bodies: Suddenly they raised their gaze and then dropped to the ground as if they were in a sound sleep. Before long their hands and feet began to undulate. They stood erect and danced around with a fierce expression, their eyes shut so tightly they could not be opened.
