Doctor Who “Human Nature” “The Family of Blood” Doctor Who “Human Nature” “The Family of Blood” The Time Lords (sometimes called the Lords of Time) were the rulers of the planet Gallifrey before the last Time War. The Time Lords had one of the oldest and mightiest civilisations in the universe. As the Time Lords, they held absolute power for some ten million years. Gallifrey had two suns and the planet is mainly red. Time Lords had the ability to watch over time of the unverse, see through cause and effect, and promised not to interfere it. It was believed that the Last Great Time War between the Time Lords and the Daleks cause the destruction of both races. Both the Time Lords and the Daleks were all entirely wiped out and the killer was the Doctor. Daleks was a specie that had no emotion except hate, and they would slaughter the universe with their superior technologies after they had destroyed Gallifrey, the Doctor had to choose between bad (Gallifrey and the Daleks fall at the same time) and very bad (allow the Daleks slaughter the universe), and he chose the former, ended the Last Great Time War, and became the last of his specie and killer of his own kind. He has traveled in the TARDIS ever since. The Time Lords can cheat death by regenerating their bodies, meaning accelerating the body cells and growing whole new bodies inside out. The memories will stay the same but the personality will be different. Even without regeneration, the Time Lords had a much longer life span than human beings. The Doctor had regenerated 12 times and he is currently over 900 years old (the 11th Doctor). However, the Time Lords could not live forever. They could die immediately before the regeneration process could happen in time. The abilities to see through time and space, and even the ability to regenerate, both came from the Time Vortex, which is the same thing that is in the TARDIS core. Beside that, the Time Lords was a specie full of rich culture. One proof of their superior technologies is the TARDIS, Time and Reletive Dimension in Space, with the living Time Vortex in the TARDIS core, the TARDIS appears to be “bigger inside than the outside, ” according to Rose Tyler. The Time Lords were also outstanding in biology. The proof is that they could biologically alter a Time Lord into some other specie, such as a human, and put the Time Lord conscious into a special watch with a biodamper, avoiding anyone to open it. 1 Doctor Who “Human Nature” “The Family of Blood” MARTHA: Is he all right? JOAN: Excuse me, Martha. It's hardly good form to enter a master's study without knocking. MARTHA: Sorry. Right. Yeah. (She goes back to the door and knocks on it.) MARTHA: But is he all right? They said you fell down the stairs, Sir. DOCTOR: No, it was just a tumble, that's all. ==================================== DOCTOR [on scanner]: This working? Martha, before I change, here's a list of instructions for when I'm human. One, don't let me hurt anyone. We can't have that, but you know what humans are like. Two, don't worry about the Tardis. I'll put it on emergency power so they can't detect it. Just let it hide away. Four. No, wait a minute, three. No getting involved in big historical events. Four, you. Don't let me abandon you. (She fast forwards it.) MARTHA: But there was a meteor, a shooting star. What am I supposed to do then? DOCTOR [on scanner]: And twenty three. If anything goes wrong, if they find us, Martha, then you know what to do. Open the watch. Everything I am is kept safe in there. Now, I've put a perception filter on it so the human me won't think anything of it. To him, it's just a watch. But don't open it unless you have to. Because once it's open, then the Family will be able to find me. It's all down to you, Martha. Your choice. Oh, and thank you. MARTHA: I wish you come back.(我希望你回來。) ==================================== MARTHA: He's different from any other man you've ever met, right? JOAN: Yes. MARTHA: And sometimes he says these strange things, like people and places you've never heard of, yeah? But it's deeper than that. Sometimes when you look in his eyes you know, you just know that there's something else in there. Something hidden. Right behind the eyes, something hidden away in the dark. ==================================== (Mr. Clark has the Tardis with him.) (Mr. Clark 手上有 Tardis。) CLARK: Doctor! Doctor! MARTHA: You recognize it, don't you? JENNY: Come out, Doctor. Come to us! DOCTOR: I've never seen it in my life. MARTHA: Do you remember its name? JOAN: I'm sorry, John, but you wrote about it. The blue box. You dreamt of a blue box. 2 Doctor Who “Human Nature” “The Family of Blood” DOCTOR: I'm not... I'm John Smith. That's all I want to be. John Smith, with his life, and his job, and his love. Why can't I be John Smith? Isn't he a good man? JOAN: Yes. Yes, he is. DOCTOR: Why can't I stay? MARTHA: But we need the Doctor. DOCTOR: What am I, then? Nothing. I'm just a story. ==================================== LATIMER: I was so scared of the Doctor. JOAN: Why? LATIMER: Because I've seen him. He's like fire and ice and rage. He's like the night and the storm in the heart of the sun. DOCTOR: Stop it. LATIMER: He's ancient and forever. He burns at the center of time and he can see the turn of the universe. DOCTOR: Stop it! I said stop it! LATIMER: And he's wonderful. ==================================== MARTHA: That's him. All you have to do is open it and he's back. DOCTOR: You knew this all along and yet you watched while Nurse Redfern and I ...(你一直都知道, 卻看著我跟 Redfern...) MARTHA: I didn't know how to stop you. He gave me a list of things to watch out, for but that wasn't included. DOCTOR: Falling in love? That didn't even occur to him? MARTHA: No. (沒有。) DOCTOR: Then what sort of man is that? And now you expect me to die? MARTHA: It was always going to end, though! The Doctor said the Family's got a limited lifespan, and that's why they need to consume a Time Lord. Otherwise, three months and they die. Like mayflies, he said. DOCTOR: So your job was to execute me. MARTHA: People are dying out there. They need him and I need him. Because you've got no idea of what he's like. I've only just met him. It wasn't even that long ago. But he is everything. He's just everything to me and he doesn't even look at me, but I don't care, because I love him to bits. And I hope to God he won't remember me saying this! ==================================== BAINES: He never raised his voice. That was the worst thing. The fury of the Time Lord. And then we discovered why. Why this Doctor, who had fought with gods and demons, why he'd run away from us and hidden. He was being kind. 3.

DOCTOR WHO AND THE CREATION OF A NON-GENDERED HERO ARCHETYPE Alessandra J. Pelusi 85 Pages December 2014 This thesis investigates the ways in which the television program Doctor Who forges a new, non-gendered, hero archetype from the amalgamation of its main characters. In order to demonstrate how this is achieved, I begin with reviewing some of the significant and relevant characters that contribute to this. I then examine the ways in which female and male characters are represented in Doctor Who, including who they are, their relationship with the Doctor, and what major narrative roles they play. I follow this with a discussion of the significance of the companion, including their status as equal to the Doctor. From there, I explore the ways in which the program utilizes existing archetypes by subverting them and disrupting the status quo.

  • Maids and Masters: the Distribution of Power in Doctor Who Series Three
Maids and Masters: The Distribution of Power in Doctor Who Series Three Courtney Stoker is a cisgendered white woman living in the United States. After getting her M.A. in English, she started working as an adjunct instructor to pay for her writing habit. Her research and writing focus on feminism, science fiction and fan studies. She is a bit of an expert on cosplay as a fan practice, particularly femme cosplay in the Doctor Who fan community, and has been interviewed on the subject at io9 and the now- defunct The Sexist. She recently started Doctor Her, a group feminist Doctor Who fan blog (www.doctorher.com). What’s so compelling about the Doctor? Why do so many different kinds of people jump in the TARDIS to travel with him? Is it his boyish SERIES charm, his goodness, his sense of humor? I would argue that for most of the companions in the new series, the most attractive part of the Time Lord is his power. To convince Rose to leave her life for adventure, the ninth Doctor expands on the power he has: “Did I mention that it travels in time?” Later, Martha says to the 3 crowd in the tenement in Last of the Time Lords, “I know what he can do.” That’s her vote of confidence for the Doctor, how she convinces the people of the Doctor’s importance: what he can do, not how good or brave he is. The adventure the Doctor offers his companion is insepara- ble from his power, from his ability to manipulate space and time, from his ability to threaten and fight enemies unimaginably evil and power- ful.

  • Andrew Cooper (Liverpool Hope Universityi)
Panoptikum nr 11 (18) 2012 Andrew Cooper (Liverpool Hope Universityi) Adapting to Survive: The Cultural Regeneration of Doctor Who Doctor Who is the longest running science fiction television show in history and next year celebrates its 50th anniversary. This essay will explore two key el- ements which can be attributed to the shows survival; its ability to reflect cul- tural demands and its ability to adapt works for television from other mediums. Originally designed to ensure the survival of the show after the lead actor left, regeneration has been a key part of Doctor Who. Not only has the Doctor himself regenerated, now ten times, but his enemies, T.A.R.D.I.S. and the whole design of the show have had to regenerate in order to survive. Each new actor playing the Doctor „inflect the »Doctorish« qualities in significant different ways, providing new possibilities”1 as well as refreshing the audience with different perspectives on one continuing story. The show has had to change to fit modern technology, both involving interactive technology, such as webisodes, as well as up to date special ef- fects. For Doctor Who to remain successful therefore it has to be able to regenerate to its ever changing audience. In 1963 the producers of Doctor Who needed a monster for its second serial, thus on the 21st December 1963 Terry Nation’s Daleks made their first appearance. The Daleks, created only 20 years after the Second World War were based on the Nazis. This is why in 1975’s Genesis of the Daleks the Dalek’s creator Davros draws parallels with Adolf Hitler.

  • The Top 10 Doctor Who Episodes BBC America Pole Taken in 2013
The Top 10 Doctor Who Episodes BBC America pole taken in 2013 At the time of the 50th anniversary, there were an incredible 738 individual episodes of Doctor Who, making up a total 239 different stories. Unsurprisingly, then, over those five decades the fandom as a whole has tended to find it difficult to pin down exactly which is the undisputed “best episode.” The show means so many different things to so many different people, that the concept of a favorite episode can vary wildly depending on what a particular viewer actually looks for in the show. As such, while Doctor Who Magazine readers voted “The Caves of Androzani” as their number one story back in 2009, for the superfans polled in 2013 it didn’t even make the top 10. That’s not to say it isn’t highly-regarded—just that the range of choices were so varied that the tiniest margins could bump an episode up or down the list. Indeed, as many as 87 different episodes were nominated somewhere in the top fives of our jury. 10: Inferno (classic Who) This eight part serial is the one time the classic series dabbled with the concept of alternative timelines, in this 1970 Third Doctor story by Don Houghton, it was such a definitive take that it proved difficult to return to this theme. *9: The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances (“Everybody Lives!”) This two part episode holds a special place in the hearts of fans since it allows the ninth Doctor, so damaged by his experiences in the Time War, to actually glow with delight.

There’s injustice to overcome, people to save, communities to empower, and a lot to learn. Through the Doctor and their companions’ journeys, we learn that no matter the cost it’s important to try our very best to help people because every life is important. And, thanks to the Doctor, we know we can’t help everyone by ourselves. We have to rely on our friends, our communities, and the help of strangers to make the biggest impact. While no journey is ever easy, we hope you’ll take this one with us. In this Companion’s Toolkit, we’ll be talking about feminism, indigenous rights, and the history and effects of war. These topics can be difficult, and solutions to the problems we’re addressing aren’t always clear, but that doesn’t mean we can’t try.
