Con el término de lo indígena denominamos imágenes de distinción y alteridad que forma- ron o forman parte de diferentes estructuras sociales en y allende las Américas Latinas. Con el fin de averiguar la agencia de estas diferenciaciones culturales en su respectiva historicidad, los autores se concentran en diferentes actores o grupos de actores quienes constituyeron o siguen constituyendo espacios glocales (Robertson 1994). Estos espa- cios glocales, productos de interacciones culturales en zonas de contacto (Pratt 1992), conectaron o conectan diferentes niveles locales con el nivel global. Bajo este contexto, lo indígena fue producido y se produce, a la vez que se plasma en diferentes formaciones sociales y en sus representaciones. Los siguientes artículos demuestran cuánta agencia, es decir, cuánto poder de acción los diferentes actores atribuyeron o atribuyen a lo indígena y cómo estas imágenes de distinción y alteridad influyeron o siguen influyendo en la constitución de diferentes configuraciones sociales. Partimos de la premisa de que la historia remota de las poblaciones del mundo debería ser investigada y escrita como una historiografía de interacciones e interdepen- dencias glocales: La primera circunnavegación del mundo, realizada por la expedición de Magallanes entre 1519 y 1522, fue el momento histórico en el que se comprobó prácticamente la idea previamente articulada por astrónomos de que el mundo tiene la forma de globo. Esto significa que con el llamado descubrimiento del continente ame- ricano por Cristóbal Colón en 1492 (O’Gorman 1961; Dussel 1992) se inició toda una serie de procesos de intercambio y de conexión tanto globalizantes como pluridimensio- nales. Con la inclusión primera de las islas caribeñas y –mencionando los dos ejemplos paradigmáticos para todo el continente– a partir de 1521 y 1536 con la inserción de los imperios de los mēxìcâ y de los inca, las entonces redes globales de la economía y de las religiones se vieron nutridas, pero también y de manera simultanea nuevas urdimbres se fueron creando. Sin embargo, durante siglos la historiografía consideraba estas conexiones e inter- cambios glocales sólo de manera unidireccional. En la historiografía europea influida por la filosofía de la historia evolucionista de Hegel prevalecieron los análisis e inter- pretaciones de procesos históricos desde la imagen de una Europa hegemónica, basados en el modelo de Estado-nación. Al describir a las otras poblaciones del mundo como 8 Anne Ebert y Romy Köhler simplemente contactadas y colonizadas, estos enfoques eurocentristas subordinaron e incluso ocultaron activamente las perspectivas e historias propias. Sólo en las últimas décadas los efectos de la globalización, primeramente conside- rados como fenómenos recientes de extensión, densificación y aceleración de relaciones e interacciones globales, han puesto en cuestión los fundamentos epistemológicos del análisis de procesos socio-históricos. Los trabajos elaborados en el transcurso del spatial turn en las humanidades demostraron sobre todo la necesidad de dar importancia a la investigación de procesos sociales y culturales que se desconectan de localidades mate- rializadas y que simultáneamente se inscriben en localidades dentro de nuevas redes e imaginarios. En lugar de presuponer que las entidades pueden ser aceptadas sólo natura- les a naciones, territorios o identidades delimitadas, se les puede concibir de mejor modo como entidades relacionales que se forman en el contexto de circulaciones globales y con inserciones, adaptaciones y negociaciones locales. Estas interacciones multi- y transloca- les crean lo que Robert Robertson denominó procesos de glocalización (1994). Las nuevas formas de pensar fenómenos sociales desde la perspectiva de la glo- balización repercutieron en las ciencias históricas. Dando paso al análisis de procesos relacionales e interacciones glocales con especial enfoque en la historicidad de sus cons- trucciones, erosiones, intensidades y efectos, se comenzó a abstraerse del análisis desde el modelo del Estado-nación (Osterhammel & Petersson 2003: 10-13, 24; Hausberger 2007a: 21-23). Al temprano siglo xvi, comienzo de la Edad Moderna y hasta entonces considerado como el principio de la expansión europea, se le identifica como el inicio de contactos culturales que conectaron diferentes niveles locales con el nivel global (Conrad & Eckert 2007: 20). Issue 20www.sjsunews.com/spartan_daily Tuesday, March 14, 2017 NEW YORK TIMES Journalist receives Hearst Award BY LISA PRINCIPI EXECUTIVE PRODUCER New York Times reporter David Streitfeld spoke to students about the fi eld of journalism while receiving the William Randolph Hearst Foundation Award for Excellence in Professional Journalism in the Student Union on Monday. Streitfeld is also a Pulitzer Prize winner and recipient of the “Best in Business” award from the Society of American Business Editors and Writers. His 35 years of experience includes working for the Los Angeles Times and the Washington Post. He is best known for writing about technology and business in the Silicon Valley, his investigation of fake online reviews and examining Amazon’s employment practices. “The most important piece I wrote in the past two or three years is the piece on Amazon,” Streitfeld said. “Occasionally in a journalist’s life you write something that really connects with people and that was clearly it. In general, I don’t write that often, but I’m lucky that a lot of the stuff gets a response.” Streitfeld collaborated with Jodi Kantor on their article titled “Inside Amazon: Wrestling Big Ideas in a Bruising Workplace,” which received almost 6,000 comments from readers on the New York Times website.

    Beginnings XXIII A PUBLICATION OF ADULT STUDENT WRITING OF THE Ohio Writers’ Conference Ohio Literacy Resource Center ii iii Foreword During this past year, as we spent time away from others, we spent more time with ourselves – in our own heads – reflecting about what our lives and our relationships meant. We ate, we slept, we worked (if we were able), and we made sure that our loved ones were cared for. We also read, watched the news, and we waited for normal to return. While we waited, some of us wrote. We wrote about our lives, our dreams, our memories, and our hopes. We wrote about our happiness and our sorrows. And most importantly, we wrote to make sense of the strange and uncertain times that we were living in. Some of the writing we did appears in this volume of Beginnings which includes a special section – Pandemic Ponderings. Pandemic Ponderings, a reflection of 2020, not only showcases students’ stories, but contains the voices of teachers who were also willing to share their experiences and feelings about this unique year. Our Aspire teachers work hard every day to help their students succeed, and we were excited to include them in this special section. When thinking about what I would write for this foreword, I couldn’t help but to reflect on the beautiful cover art created by Gabriel Pereyra. His creation “Man and a Book” reminded me of being in my own space – in my own head. When the Beginnings authors spent time in their own heads – thinking, worrying, reflecting, remembering – they found stories and wrote them down.

    Archaeological Practice and Political Change: Transitions and Transformations in the Use of the Past in Nationalist, Neoliberal and Indigenous Bolivia By Donna Yates Trinity Hall This dissertation is submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Department of Archaeology University of Cambridge September 2011 Summary Archaeological Practice and Political Change: Transitions and Transformations in the Use of the Past in Nationalist, Neoliberal and Indigenous Bolivia By Donna Yates This study will explore how major governmental changes in Bolivia affected both archaeological practice and the socio-political use of archaeological resources. Spanning the years between 1979 and 2010, and contextualised by a complete analysis of archaeological law passed since 1906, this dissertation will present a broad discussion of changes within Bolivian archaeology and politics and will follow targeted aspects of archaeological practice and governmental use of the past during several distinct periods in Bolivia’s history. Through this, I will clarify how changes in the national politics of Bolivia have affected the use of archaeological resources by governments, citizens and descendant groups. In the narrowest sense, this research will identify how major political shifts affect both Bolivian archaeology and the use of the past in Bolivian identity politics. Few in- depth historical analyses of Bolivian archaeology have been produced and none of these have the beneft of incorporating the actions of the current Indigenous-led administration. This is the frst time that all historic Bolivian archaeological laws have been collected, analysed individually and evaluated collectively for evidence of long- term trends. Also, this project represents the frst time that word frequency analysis tools have been used to gain information about a large body of Bolivian archaeological texts.
