(wb) AUSTRALIA HCJB Australia is receiving a second 100 kW tx shipped from Ecuador which will arrive on site early this year. This represents a gift of approximately one million Australian Dollars. They will need to retrofit the tx to make the motors adaptable to their 240 volt single phase power and the 50 cycle as opposed to the 60 cycle used in the U.S. In addition, the tx will need to be fitted with special ducting and connections to the antenna switcher. They will need to raise about $100,000 to transport, retrofit and install this new tx on site in Kununurra, plus the additional studio and communications equipment. No definite ID even now, but many mentions of Azerbaijan in a Turkic lang preceded by interval signal and opening mx. Vlad Titarev has heard this identify as R Azerbaijan International instead of the old Voice of Azerbaijan. (Mauno Ritola-FIN, in Dxplorer) Here in Denmark the station is covered by the Overcomer Ministry via Juelich and VOA Tinang both in English and on 6110.0, but it causes a strong heterodyne from 6110.8 kHz. (Anker Petersen-DEN dswci DXW Dec 28) BENIN 1566 Here is planned coverage map of the new Benin tx. Looks like it is beaming north with 100 kW so should be heard here I guess. (Steve Whitt-UK, Jan MW Nx Dec 15, via dxld) The new TWR 100 kW 1566 kHz coverage map, source? uncalibrated, shows it emanating from central Benin in a figure-8 pattern, minor lobe to the south, but covering the relatively close coastal areas from beyond Accra, Ghana to beyond Lagos, Nigeria, and a major lobe due north in an horizontal oval pretty much in the centre of West Africa, covering most of Niger, NW Nigeria, Burkina Faso, Mali (but not as far as Bamako), eastern Mauritania, and the southern third of Algeria; with nulls to the east and west. I guess this is for night. Don't suppose ground conductivity is very good in the Sahara or Sahel.
