CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION Officiant: Let us humbly confess our sins unto Almighty God.

Please kneel

All: Almighty and most merciful Father, we have erred and strayed from thy ways like lost sheep, we have followed too much the devices and desires of our own hearts, we have offended against thy holy laws, we have left undone those things which we ought to have done, and we have done those things which we ought not to have done. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us, spare thou those who confess their faults, restore thou those who are penitent, according to thy promises declared unto mankind in Christ Jesus our Lord; and grant, O most merciful Father, for his sake, that we may hereafter live a godly, righteous, and sober life, to the glory of thy holy Name. Amen.

Officiant: The Almighty and merciful Lord grant you absolution and remission of all your sins, true repentance, amendment of life, and the grace and consolation of his Holy Spirit. Amen.

Jubilate Deo Benjamin Britten O be joyful in the Lord, all ye lands! Serve the Lord with gladness and come before His presence with a song. Be ye sure that the Lord is God; it is he that hath made us not we ourselves; we are his people and the sheep of his pasture. O go your way into his gates with thanksgiving and into his courts with praise; be thankful unto him and speak good of his Name. For the Lord is gracious; his mercy is everlasting; and his truth endureth from generation to generation. FIRST READING Isaiah 43:1-7 A Reading from the Book of Isaiah Thus says the Lord, he who created you, O Jacob, he who formed you, O Israel: Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name, you are mine. When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you; when you walk through fire you shall not be burned, and the flame shall not consume you. For I am the Lord your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior. I give Egypt as your ransom, Ethiopia and Seba in exchange for you. Because you are precious in my sight, and honored, and I love you, I give people in return for you, nations in exchange for your life. Do not fear, for I am with you; I will bring your offspring from the east, and from the west I will gather you; I will say to the north, "Give them up, "and to the south, "Do not withhold; bring my sons from far away and my daughters from the end of the earth-- everyone who is called by my name, whom I created for my glory, whom I formed and made." The Word of the Lord Thanks be to God

4 Please stand Hymn S-223 Surge, illuminare Tone 5 (Front portion of Hymnal)

Please sit SECOND READING Luke 3:15-17, 21-22 A reading from the Gospel according to Luke As the people were filled with expectation, and all were questioning in their hearts concerning John, whether he might be the Messiah, John answered all of them by saying, "I baptize you with water; but one who is more powerful than I is coming; I am not worthy to untie the thong of his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. His winnowing fork is in his hand, to clear his threshing floor and to gather the wheat into his granary; but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire." Now when all the people were baptized, and when Jesus also had been baptized and was praying, the heaven was opened, and the Holy Spirit descended upon him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven, "You are my Son, the Beloved; with you I am well pleased." The Word of the Lord Thanks be to God

Please stand Benedictus Domine Deus Philip Moore Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, for he hath visited and redeemed his people; and hath raised up a mighty salvation for us in the house of his servant David, as he spake by the mouth of his holy prophets, which have been since the world began: that we should be saved from our enemies, and from the hand of all that hate us; to perform the mercy promised to our forefathers, and to remember his holy covenant; to perform the oath which he sware to our forefather Abraham, that he would give us, that we being delivered out of the hand of our enemies might serve him without fear, in holiness and righteousness before him, all the days of our life. And thou, child, shalt be called the prophet of the Highest, for thou shalt go before the face of the Lord prepare his ways; to give knowledge of salvation unto his people for the remission of their sins, through the tender mercy of our God, whereby the day spring from on high hath visited us; to give light to them that sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, and to guide our feet into the way of peace. Glory be to the Father.

THE APOSTLES’ CREED I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth; And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried. He descended into hell. On the third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father almighty From thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

5 THE PRAYERS Richard Shephard Cantor: The Lord be with you. Choir: And with thy spirit. Cantor: Let us pray.

Please kneel

Choir: Lord, have mercy upon us. Christ, have mercy upon us. Lord, have mercy upon us.

THE LORD’S PRAYER

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

SUFFRAGES

6 THE COLLECT OF THE DAY Father in heaven, who at the baptism of Jesus in the River Jordan proclaimed him your beloved Son and anointed him with the Holy Spirit: Grant that all who are baptized into his Name may keep the covenant they have made, and boldly confess him as Lord and Savior; who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, in glory everlasting. Choir: Amen.

A COLLECT FOR SUNDAYS O God, you make us glad with the weekly remembrance of the glorious resurrection of your Son our Lord: Give us this day such blessing through our worship of you, that the week to come may be spent in your favor; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Choir: Amen.

A COLLECT FOR GUIDANCE Heavenly Father, in you we live and move and have our being: We humbly pray you so to guide and govern us by your Holy Spirit, that in all the cares and occupations of our life we may not forget you, but may remember that we are ever walking in your sight; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Choir: Amen.

A COLLECT FOR MISSION Lord Jesus Christ, you stretched out your arms of love on the hard wood of the cross that everyone might come within the reach of your saving embrace: So clothe us in your Spirit that we, reaching forth our hands in love, may bring those who do not know you to the knowledge and love of you; for the honor of your Name. Choir: Amen.

THE GENERAL THANKSGIVING Almighty God, Father of all mercies, we thine unworthy servants do give thee most humble and hearty thanks for all thy goodness and loving-kindness to us and to all people. We bless thee for our creation, preservation, and all the blessings of this life; but above all for thine inestimable love in the redemption of the world by our Lord Jesus Christ; for the means of grace, and for the hope of glory. And, we beseech thee, give us that due sense of all thy mercies, that our hearts may be unfeignedly thankful; and that we show forth thy praise, not only with our lips, but in our lives, by giving up our selves to thy service, and by walking before thee in holiness and righteousness all our days; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom, with thee and the Holy Spirit, be all honor and glory, world without end. Amen.

A PRAYER OF ST. CHRYSOSTOM Almighty God, you have given us grace at this time with one accord to make our common supplication to you; and you have promised through your well-beloved Son that when two or three are gathered together in his Name you will be in the midst of them: Fulfill now, O Lord, our desires and petitions as may be best for us; granting us in this world knowledge of your truth, and in the age to come life everlasting. Amen.

THE GRACE The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, be with us all evermore. Amen.

Please stand THE PEACE The peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you.

8 THE CHOIR OF ST. CHRYSOSTOM’S CHURCH Patty Kennedy, Kate Lee, Erica Schuller, Meaghan Stainback Sammi Block, Amber Farish, Luke Lemmeier, Rachel Mast Justin Berkowitz, Charles Cooney, Adam Smith, Josh Taylor Justin Adair, Mark Haddad, Ian Hosack, Nathan Kistler Richard Hoskins – Director of Music & Organist Kimberly Schafer – Carillonneur

Johann Sebastian Bach's monumental Clavierübung, Dritter Teil, (Keyboard Practice, Third Part) contains large and small works written in the form of a Lutheran organ mass: a Prelude and Fugue frame chorales which correspond to the various parts of the service, Kyrie, Gloria, Creed, etc., as sung in 18th century Lutheran liturgical practice. Each of these works portray in their counterpoint, text-painting, and gesture, Bach’s most profound theological thinking, combining as a whole to form a veritable Prayer Book. One of the large choral settings in Bach's Clavierübung III, Christ, unser Herr zum Jordan kam, sets the chorale melody (Hymn 139) in the pedal. A florid accompaniment representing the flowing waters of the River Jordan is heard in the manuals.

Benjamin Britten, William Walton, Peter Maxwell-Davies and Michael Tippett were the four most prominent musicians of the post-World War II era in England. Their writing extended the glorious tradition exemplified by Parry, Stanford, Howells and Vaughan Williams. Britten composed many works for the church, all of which are frequently heard in England and the United States. The Jubilate Deo in C was commissioned by HRH Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, for the Choir of St. George's Chapel, Windsor. It is a sparkling piece, with nimble choral lines heard over a scherzo-like accompaniment and interesting harmonic juxtapositions.

Philip Moore was the recent Organist-Choirmaster at Minster, where he led a distinguished program of choral music. A prolific composer, he wrote a great body of choral works for the choir there. The Benedictus is a serene and mystical setting, alternating verses set to plainchant (Tonus Peregrinus) with fauxbourdons in four-part harmonies. The organ accompanies with spare chordal harmonies.

Hans Leo von Hassler (1564-1612), son of Isaac Hassler (town musician of Nuremburg) and a celebrated organist and composer, was the first German composer to go to Italy and study with the famous Andrea Gabrieli in Venice. Upon his return he was Music Director in Augsburg, then appointed to the court of the Elector of Saxony. His glorious setting of John1:14 shows the direct influence of his Venetian teacher in its alternation of high and low choirs and its over-all homophonic chordal structure. The text is set in declamatory fanfare-like passages and in shorter, more complex rhythmic sections. The work was first printed in Nuremberg in 1597.

Louis Vierne was Organiste Titulaire of Notre Dame, Paris, from the early years of this century until 1937 when he died there during a concert. A student of both César Franck and Charles Marie Widor he expanded the French symphonic organ tradition with six symphonies and many other works for organ, all highly imaginative in their use of the instrument and in harmonic development. The Toccata in b flat minor, one of the 24 Pièces des Fantaisies, is a fierce and relentlessly powerful work employing melodic material equally between the manuals and pedal. There is a striking use of diminished seventh chords, a sense of the whirlwind, and finishes senza ritard (without slowing).

The descant to Hymn 704 is by Richard Hoskins.
