The Church has always exercised the greatest solici tude for the members of her clergy . This fact is clearly evident in her repeated promulgation of decrees of differ ent councils and synodal enactments relative to this phase of her organization . Her eff orts in this respect have ‘ been nobly and generously seconded e verywhere and at all times by the hierarchy as may be substantiated by t e liable documentary proof . The subject of irregularity is of its very nature an im por tant one. Irregularities have been instituted by the Church to preserve the dignity and honor of her min istr y. -

Campbell Abstract: Scholars have debated Pope Pius XII’s role in the Holocaust since the 1960s. Did he do everything he could and should have done to save Jews? His critics say no because of antisemitism rooted in the traditional Catholic views. His defenders say yes and deny that he was an antisemite. In my thesis, I shall assess the arguments on both sides in terms of the available evidence. I shall focus both on what Pius XII did do and what he did not do and on the degree to which he can be held responsible for the actions of low-level clergy. -

Canon law of marriage Indissolubility of Marriage In 406 two Synods of North Africa, called the 11th Council of Carthage stated, " we decree that according to the evangelic and apostolic discipline neither a husband dismissed by his wife, nor a wife dismissed by her husband may marry another; but that they are to remain as they are or to be reconciled to one another. if they despise this law they ought to be subjected to penance. and on this subject a imperial law out to be promulgated." the canon's teaching on indissolubility appears to be absolute i.e. it does not allow for any exception. this is important because they was and still is, a debate over Matther 19:9 which has Jesus saying, "Now i say this to you: anyone who divorces his wife- I am not speaking of an illicit marriage- marries another is guilty of adultery. the expression illicit marriage is a translation of the Greek word proneia( ). it is possible to translate the this word as adultery. thus the text from Matthew could mean that anyone who divorces his wife and marries another is guilty of adultery except in the case of him divorcing his wife because she has committed adultery. but this Greek word porneia can have at least three other meanings: a relationship that is not really a marriage because of some legal impediment; a betrothal; an incestous union which is not a true marriage. in all these cases the man would be able to divorce his wife and marry another without being guilty of adultery for the simple reason that his first marriage was not a real marriage. -

THE MEDIATION OF THE CHURCH IN SOME PONTIFICAL DOCUMENTS FRANCIS X. LAWLOR, SJ. Weston College N His recent encyclical letter, Hurnani generis, of Aug. 12, 1950, the I Holy Father reproves those who "reduce to a meaningless formula the necessity of belonging to the true Church in order to achieve eternal salvation."1 In the light of the Pope's insistence in the same encyclical letter on the ordinary, day-by-day teaching office of the Roman Pontiffs, it will be useful to select from the infra-infallible but authentic teaching of the Popes some of the abundant material touching the question of the mediatorial function of the Church in the order of salvation. The Popes, to be sure, do not speak and write after the manner of theo logians but as pastors of souls, and it is doubtless not always easy to transpose to a theological level what is contained in a pastoral docu ment and expressed in a pastoral method of approach. Yet the authentic teaching of the Popes is both a guide to, and a source of, theological thinking. The documents cited are of varying solemnity and doctrinal importance; an encyclical letter is clearly of greater magisterial value than, let us say, an occasional epistle to some prelate. It is not possible here to situate each citation in its documentary context; but the force and point of a quotation, removed from its documentary perspective, is perhaps as often lessened as augmented. Those who wish may read them in their context, if they desire a more careful appraisal of evidence. -

The Church rejuvenates in the power of the Gospel and the Spirit continually renews her, builds her up, and guides her “with hierarchical and charismatic gifts”.[1] The Second Vatican Council has repeatedly highlighted the marvelous work of the Holy Spirit that sanctifies the People of God, guides it, adorns it with virtue, and enrichens it with special graces for her edification. As the Fathers love to show, the action of the divine Paraclete in the Church is multiform. John Chrysostom writes: “What gifts that work for our salvation are not given freely by the Holy Spirit? Through Him we are freed from slavery and called to liberty; we are led to adoption as children and, one might say, formed anew, after having laid down the heavy and hateful burden of our sins. Through the Holy Spirit we see assemblies of priests and we possess ranks of doctors; from this source spring forth gifts of revelation, healing graces, and all of the other charisms that adorn the Church of God”.[2] Thanks to the Church’s life itself, to the numerous Magisterial interventions, and to theological research, happily the awareness has grown of the multiform action of the Holy Spirit in the Church, thus arousing a particular attentiveness to the charismatic gifts by which at all times the People of God are enriched in order to carry out their mission. -

CHAPTER ONE PRECONCILIAR VOTA AND THEIR BACKGROUND 1. Th e Antepreparatory Vota Post recitationem epistulae ex parte Commissionis Antepraeparatoriae Concilii receptae, E. Decanus instanter petit ut singuli professores suas de rebus in Concilio propositiones notam faciant.1 Th ese words are to be found in the report of the Faculty Council meeting of Leuven’s Faculty of Th eology and Canon Law dated October 9, 1959. While it may appear to have little signifi cance, it serves nevertheless as an interesting point of departure for our study of the preparatory phases of Vatican II. A closer examination of the notes taken on the occasion by dean Joseph Coppens2 reveals that a circular letter from Cardinal Domenico Tardini3 had apparently been addressed to the rectors of the Catholic universities. Common Misconceptions about Divorce and Annulments in the Catholic Church Once people divorce, they are no longer part of the Church. Divorced people are excommunicated and no longer able to receive the Eucharist or other sacraments. (FALSE, NOT FULLY ACCURATE) Divorce in itself does not prevent Catholics from receiving the sacraments, though if the individual in question is responsible for the breakup of the marriage through some sinful action (infidelity, spousal abuse), there may be questions about his or her ability to receive. These questions are best handled in the confessional. Catholics who divorced and remarried outside the Church are not under the penalty of excommunication, but they are in an objective state of sin and must refrain from reception of the sacraments until their irregular marital status is corrected. An objective state of sin does not mean that this is a bad person, it's simply a state that is not consistent with what Jesus and the Church teaches and believes. Catholics in this situation must still participate in Mass, but may not receive Eucharist until their marriage situation is regularized according to the teachings of Jesus Christ and his Church. (See St. Mark 10:2-12; St. Matthew 5:31- 32 and 19:3-9.) An annulment wipes away all vestiges of the past relationship, and children from that relationship become illegitimate. (TOTALLY FALSE) If a declaration of nullity is made regarding a past marriage, the Church is saying that a permanent bond of marriage did not arise at the time of the wedding. This means that both people of the prior union are free to celebrate a marriage in the Church. -

What is the most underrated event of the past, and why is it so much more significant than people understand? When the Gregorian Reform was launched at the dawn of the second millennium, the papacy’s agenda was unequivocal. In an effort to centralise power and re-establish authority, a succession of popes both before and after Gregory VII (d. 1085), the reform’s namesake, introduced changes designed to free the Church from lay control. Secular rulers were stripped of their sacerdotal functions and clerics came to be the sole representatives of the Church, rather than the laity, as simony, investiture, and nicolaitism (i.e., clerical marriage) came under attack. The most far-reaching and long-lasting repercussions of these reforms, however, yet the most overlooked by historians, was the social upheaval caused by enforced clerical celibacy and its particularly devastating effect on women. The relentless onslaughts on clerical marriage instigated a social revolution that spanned the European continent, provoking riots for centuries, and, most perniciously, demonising half the world’s population as the reformers campaigned against women in order to make marriage less appealing. Misogyny has been woven so deeply into history that its nuanced causes and effects at any given time can be difficult to discern. But an analysis of the rhetoric used by reformers to vilify clerical wives and women in general can trace the revitalised hostility towards women beginning in the High Middle Ages to these reforms. For the first thousand years of Christianity, clerical marriage was common practice. Despite various church councils promulgating the ideal of celibacy, beginning with the Synod of Elvira in the fourth century which declared that all clerics were to “abstain from conjugal relations with their wives”1, deacons, priests, bishops, and even popes continued to marry and have children.
