EXECUTIVE SUMMARY The 2009 Sapphire Award Media Placements and Online Media Room

On December 4, 2009, The Blue Foundation for a Healthy recognized seven organizations that have demonstrated excellence and impact in improving the health-related outcomes of Florida's at-risk populations and communities at its 2009 Sapphire A ward ceremony.

Public relations efforts to generate publicity about The Sapphire Award included communication with targeted media in advance of the award, distributing a media advisory and statewide press release, and making follow-up calls to media. In addition to these traditional public relations tactics, The Blue Foundation utilized an online media room to promote remote coverage by honorees' hometown media. This tactic was especially efficient because the award ceremony did not take place in many honorees' media markets.

The online media room contained: • Unique landing pages for each honoree; • Broadcast quality b-roll of each honoree accepting their award; • B-roll from on-site filming; • Clip of The Blue Foundation's executive director describing The Sapphire A ward; • Print-quality still photos, including captions, of each organization receiving their award; • Honoree on-site photos, including captions; and • Statewide press release and information about each organization.

The online media room was visited by 148 unique users who viewed 843 pages and visited the site 255 times*. The busiest day was Monday, Dec. 7 with 68 visits, followed by Friday, Dec. 4 with 33 visits. The most viewed photograph was from The Comprehensive AIDS Program of Palm Beach County page with 18 views, followed by a photo from the We Care Network page with 14 views.

From Dec. 4, 2009 to Jan. 2010, an estimated audience of 143 million was exposed to 227 clips. Highlights included news articles in La Prensa, The Palm Beach Post, The Beaches/Ponte Vedra Leader and Ponte Vedra Shorelines. News briefs ran in Florida Philanthropic Network, BCBSF Daily Find and Financial News & Daily Record. In addition to traditional media, the Orlando Sentinal blog, the Hispanosphere Facebook page and a Brazen Careerist blog covered The 2009 Sapphire Awards. There were an additional 212 online placements.

ANN STORCK CENTER RECEIVES SAPPHIRE AWARD + $100,000

The Ann Storck Center in Ft Lauderdale, one of South Florida's leading nonprofit organizations, has recently been chosen as a top nonprofit and is the 2009 recipient of the coveted Sapphire Award given out by The Blue Foundation for a Healthy Florida. The Ann Storck Center was selected for their work in improving the health of Florida's uninsured and underserved. The award also includes a gift of $100,000 for Ann Storck Center.

The Sapphire Award is Florida's only statewide award that recognizes and promotes organizations that have demonstrated excellence in addressing health disparities within their communities.

"It was an honor to be one of the seven finalists," said Jim McGuire, the Ann Storck Center's Executive Director. "We are so grateful to the Blue Foundation for selecting us for their Sapphire Award. Their gift of $100,000, so greatly needed during these hard economic times, will be used to help the center continue serving individuals in need for years to come."

The Sapphire Award is designed to recognize and promote community health programs that have demonstrated a significant, positive impact on health-related outcomes for the state's at-risk citizens and communities. An independent selection committee of medical, public health and health communications experts from across the country determines The Sapphire Award honorees.

Fifty years ago, Nurse Ann Storck brought hope and a chance to gain independence to a special group of children who were developmentally disabled. Today, the Ann Storck Center, named in her honor, serves over 300 children and adults with severe and multiple developmental disabilities, including epilepsy, cerebral palsy, autism and mental retardation.

A nationally-accredited non-profit human service organization, the Ann Storck Center neighborhood campus in Fort Lauderdale features a preschool for infants and toddlers up to five years old, a developmental training program, and three family-like homes for children and adults with severe and/or multiple disabilities. The Center also operates five professionally staffed and equipped homes in other local neighborhoods, including the Gizmo House, a high-tech "smart" single family home for six residents, and the Pembroke Pines Cluster.

The Blue Foundation for a Healthy Florida, Inc., is the philanthropic affiliate of Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Florida created as a 501(c)(3) philanthropic foundation that supports community-based solutions that enhance access to quality health-related services for the uninsured and underserved in Florida.

A $75,000 grant from the Blue Foundation for a Healthy Florida will enable Palm Beach County's Comprehensive AIDS Program to gain back some ground lost due to budget cuts.

"Every once in a while you get a ray of sunshine," said the group's CEO, Yolette Bonnet. 'We're grateful and honored that we got this funding."

The program is focused on keeping HIV-positive people on their medication and in regular medical care so they avoid hospitalization. It does that by attaching social workers - case managers - to people burdened with HIV who may have language barriers, money problems or other issues that make them unlikely to stay on their complex drug regimens or make their doctors' appointments.

Their help is often as simple as providing bus fare. But it can also require convincing an HIV patient to accept treatment for a drug addiction.

CAP was forced to cut back the number of people it serves this fall after the Health Care District of Palm Beach County's board slashed to zero its annual grant, which had been $400,000.

'We used to have over 3,000 individuals in case management. It's probably going to be 2,500 people this year," Bonnet said.

At the time, Health Care District Chairman Jonathan Satter urged the group to seek grants from other sources to make up the gap.

The Blue Foundation is the philanthropic affiliate of Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Florida. It gave CAP its "award of distinction" for addressing health disparities within its community. The grant will help fill the void created by the Health Care District cuts, but more help is needed, Bonnet said.

'We still have a very large gap," she said.

Casselberry-based Hispanic Health Initiatives was among seven of Florida's top nonprofits that received awards for their work in improving the health of Florida's uninsured and underserved at The Blue Foundation for a Healthy Florida's 2009 Sapphire Award ceremony last Friday.

The Sapphire Award is Florida's only statewide award that recognizes and promotes organizations that have demonstrated excellence in addressing health disparities within their communities.

Hispanic Health Initiatives helps medically underserved families who face language, cultural and socio economic barriers to health information and care by educating them about chronic illnesses, disease management and prevention. Beyond health education, the organization also refers families to community health care providers for medical care. Since it was founded nine years ago by local health activist Josephine Mercado, Hispanic Health Initiatives has touched the lives of over 100,000 Central Florida residents. The organization received an Honorable Mention and $25,000 during The Blue Foundation for a Healthy Florida Sapphire Award presentation. http://blogs.orlandosentinel.com/news_ hispanicaffairs/2009/ l 2/local-hispan ic-health-group-recognized.html Hispanosphere Facebook Page December 7, 2009

2009 Sapphire Award THE EDUCATION FUND RECEIVES $100K SAPPHIRE AWARD FOR COMMUNITY HEALTH EXCELLENCE FROM THE BLUE FOUNDATION FOR A HEALTHY FLORIDA

The Education Fund won the prestigious 2009 Sapphire Award along with $100,000 from the Blue Foundation for a Healthy Florida at a ceremony held Dec. 2 in Orlando. Recognized for its Plant A Thousand Gardens Collaborative Nutrition Initiative (CNI} school gardens program, The Education Fund was one of two nonprofits selected for the top honor and the sole Miami-Dade County recipient of the Sapphire, the only statewide award that recognizes nonprofit organizations for demonstrating excellence in addressing health disparities within their communities. CNl's seed-to-table schoolyard edible gardens program was created three years ago to counter the alarming rate of childhood obesity, diabetes and other conditions due to poor nutrition literacy and eating habits among at-risk students in Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS). Students plant, maintain and harvest f vegetable gardens over the school year while relating the lessons in the garden to multidisciplinary classroom exercises. Parents take part in planting and attend workshops on preparing healthy meals. Positive data from CNI participants shows an 80% increase in children who report eating vegetables with lunch and that 88% of parents are preparing healthier foods. CNI has expanded to 25 Miami-Dade County Public Schools in 2009 with plans to be implemented in every elementary school within two years. The Sapphire Award selection committee recognized CNl's hands-on and cross-curricular approach to learning as " ...a sustainable method of ensuring the ongoing health of Floridians by changing students' attitudes towards food and nutritional awareness." "This program is a model of community collaboration, involving key stakeholders-educators, parents, students, chefs, gardeners, community wellness advocates, etc.-in an effort to teach students, and subsequently families, the importance of a nutritious lifestyle," the committee wrote.
