ANDEAN ARCHAEOLOGICAL FEATHERWORK AT THE MILWAUKEE PUBLIC MUSEUM: A CASE STUDY IN RESEARCHING POTENTIAL CONTEXT FOR LIMITED-PROVENIENCE ARTIFACTS by Diane Newbury A Thesis Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Science in Anthropology at The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee May 2014 ABSTRACT ANDEAN ARCHAEOLOGICAL FEATHERWORK AT THE MILWAUKEE PUBLIC MUSEUM: A CASE STUDY IN RESEARCHING POTENTIAL CONTEXT FOR LIMITED-PROVENIENCE ARTIFACTS by Diane Newbury The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, 2014 Under the Supervision of Professor Jean Hudson The Milwaukee Public Museum (MPM) has a collection of 134 archaeological Peruvian featherworked items accessioned in the last century with minimal provenience information. The collection is composed primarily of feather fans and ornamental devices with the remainder being sections of tunics and smaller apparel items. Due to the long- standing prevalence of grave looting in Peru and subsequent sale to collectors, many ancient Andean examples in modern museums are bereft of contextual information. Archaeological collections with limited excavation provenience may be viewed as having less research potential. However, the artifacts themselves may carry indications of their original context. As a result, limited-provenience collections can still be used to further our knowledge using a combination of research and analysis techniques. This thesis uses the following analytical approaches to study the MPM Peruvian archaeological featherwork collection: 1) literature review of relevant featherwork, textile, art history, and archaeological studies; 2) consultation with scholars and other experts; 3) grouping and categorizing the artifacts in the collection by structural commonalities; 4) detailed examination of the MPM artifacts’ raw materials and methods of construction; 5) comparison to extant featherwork collections in other museums; and ii 6) use of ethnographic and ethnohistorical studies of similar objects. Special emphasis and analysis is focused on the fans, plumes, and headdress pieces as these types of artifacts have received less attention in prior studies. iii Copyright by Diane Newbury, 2014 All B.O.C. 2008 128(2) Field evidence for the validity of White- tailed Tityra Tityra leucura Pelzeln, 1868 by Andrew Whittaker Received 30 March 2007; final revision received 28 February 2008 Tityra leucura (White- tailed Tityra) was described by Pelzeln (1868) from a specimen collected by J. Natterer, on 8 October 1829, at Salto do Girao [=Salto do Jirau] (09º20’S, 64º43’W) c.120 km south- west of Porto Velho, the capital of Rondônia, in south- central Amazonian Brazil (Fig 1). The holotype is an immature male and is housed in Vienna, at the Naturhistorisches Museum Wien (NMW 16.999). Subsequent authors (Hellmayr 1910, 1929, Pinto 1944, Peters 1979, Ridgely & Tudor 1994, Fitzpatrick 2004, Mallet- Rodrigues 2005) have expressed severe doubts concerning this taxon’s validity, whilst others simply chose to ignore it (Sick 1985, 1993, 1997, Collar et al. 1992.). Almost 180 years have passed since its collection with the result that T. leucura has slipped into oblivion, and the majority of Neotropical ornithologists and birdwatchers are unaware of its existence. Here, I review the history of T. leucura and then describe its rediscovery from the rio Madeira drainage of south- central Amazonian Brazil, providing details of my field observa- tions of an adult male. I present the first published photographs of the holotype of T. leucura, and compare plumage and morphological differences with two similar races of Black- crowned Tityra T. inquisitor pelzelni and T. i. albitorques. T. inquisitor specimens were examined at two Brazilian museums for abnormal plumage characters.

Embracing the towering Andean Mountains, the parched Atacama Desert, and the Amazon jungle fringes, the Inca Imperium was the largest empire of antiquity ever to arise south of the equator or in the Western Hemisphere. It synthesized unique adaptations to acute environmental conditions that had precedents in earlier societies and states of the Cordillera. Many of these adjustments continue to sustain the hemisphere’s largest Native American populations. Consequently, ethnographies and ethnohistories of indigenous people capture fascinating cultural institutions that shaped the archaeological past. The seminar will explore both the successes of Andean people and the failures of human development induced by natural disasters. CLASS STRUCTURE In addition to opening presentations, weekly classes will have student commentary and discussion of assigned readings. There will be oral assessments of how the readings articulate with seminar topics. Drawing upon the readings, each participant will bring to class a ~2 page short synopsis of questions and issues for discussion. The weekly briefs are important because they will guide the seminar’s considerations. They will be graded as will oral participation. Attendance is required. In 1866, Charles Roach Smith, F.S.A., of Temple Farm, Strood, writes to the same periodical to tell how J. G. Waller had recently restored all Cobham monuments, and giving details. In 1840, apparently, the tomb "had all its fragments carefully put together and the general architectural features, which had been lost by the destruction of the columns, were restored in plaster of Paris." The final restoration was begun by a Mr. Richardson (I of metallic heelball fame) and completed by Waller. "No part of the old work has been tampered with; even the smallest fragment of heraldic colour has been preserved . and every part of new work added is given from fragments carefully preserved in the repairs of 1840." It will be observed that there is no other indication of Ha,sted's suggested canopy of marble. As reconstructed, the monument has no space for columns to support a canopy, and it would seem Hasted was misled by the broken and detached Ionic columns which belonged to the sides. In no account is there reference to the iron grille which now surrounds the tomb. The tomb is described by Waller in Archreologia Cantiana, Vol.

Nazca chronology is generally broken into four main periods: 1) Proto-Nazca or Nazca 1, from the decline of Paracas culture in the second century BCE until about 0 CE; 2) Early Nazca (or Nazca 2–4), from ca. 0 CE to 450 CE; 3) A transitional Nazca 5 from 450–550 CE; and 4) Late Nazca (phases 6–7), from about 550–750 CE. Nazca 5 witnesses the beginning of environmental changes thought to be associated with the El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO), cycles of warm and cold water that interrupt the cold, low-salinity Humboldt Current that flows along the Peruvian coast. A 2009 study in Latin American Antiquity suggests that the Nazca may have contributed to this environmental collapse by clearing the land of huarango trees (Prosopis pallida, a kind of mesquite) which played a crucial role in preventing erosion. While best known for their pottery and the Nazca lines (geoglyphs created in the surrounding desert), perhaps their greatest achievement was the construction of extensive puquios, or underground aqueducts channeling water from aquifers, similar in purpose and construction to the qanats of the ancient Middle East. Through the use of puquios the ancient Nazca made parts of the desert bloom; many Nazca puquios remain in use today. Some scholars long doubted that the puquios were made by the Nazca, but in 1995 chronometric dates using accelerator mass spectrometry confirmed dates in the sixth century CE and earlier.
