THE CBC RADIO DRAMA PROJECT AND ITS BACKGROUND by Howard Fink Radio drama for me, as for many people who were growing up just after the War, was, quite simply, my introduction to theatre: the classics, Renaissance drama, and modern and contemporary plays, including European and Canadian. It is rare that one gets the opportunity to re-examine a major formative influence later in one's life, rarer still to find that in this objective light its value holds up. I have had that happy experience with CBC radio drama. I have also had an experience of a completely different kind, in attempting to trace the materials of this influ- ential phenomenon: one which, as regards the history of Canadian theatre in general, has been shared in some measure by many: it was almost impossible to study the achievement of CBC radio drama as a whole, or even at first to locate the vast majority of the plays created and produced. Of course this is partly owing to the particular nature of theatre, the original form of which, unlike a novel or a book of verse, is a live performance, which remains rather in the memories than in the bookcases of its audience. More particularly, the CBC has always considered itself a production organization rather than a repository of culture, and quite rightly so. It has, in fact, been discouraged from archival activities by the government, which considers the Public Archives of Canada as a more appropriate institution for that role. 3f course such well-known figures as Robertson Davies, George Ryga and James Reaney are well represented in print. -

Impact of Acculturation On Socialization Beliefs and Behavioral Occurences Among Indo-Canadian Immigrants ZEYNEP AYCAN * and RABINDRA N. KANUNGO ** INTRODUCTION The multicultural character of the Canada has emerged as a result of the society hosting immigrants belonging to various ethno-cultural groups. When the immigrants enter Canada, they bring with them a cultural baggage that contains a unique set of values, attitudes, socialization beliefs and behavioral norms required within the country of origin. However, as they settle in Canada, their constant interaction with the host society gradually brings about changes in these values, attitudes, beliefs, and behavioral norms. This process of transformation is known as the process of accultiuation (Redfield, Linton, &°Herskovits, 1938). Harmonious growth and maintenance of the Canadian society depends on the development of appropriate acculturation attitudes, and related socialization beliefs and practices of the various ethno-cultural immigrant groups. This study ex£imines the experience of Indo-Canadian parents and their children by identifying their acculturation attitudes, and the ways in which such attitudes are related to socialization beliefs and behaviour occurrences. The Acculturation Framework The model of acculturation attitudes proposed by Berry (1984) raises two critical questions: (a) whether or not an acculturating individual values maintaining his/her own cultural identity and characteristics, and (b) whether or not maintaining relationships with the larger society is considered to be of value to an acculturating individual (Berry, Poortinga, Segall,&Dasen, 1992). Depending on the answers to these questions, four possible altemative attitudes can be identified (Figure 1). First, the attitude of "assimilation," occurs when an acculturating individual does not wish to maintain his/her ethnic identity, but seeks relations with the larger society. -

This article is intended to explore the history of this discipline in the past 40+ years, fo- cusing on the growing awareness of Canada and its culture in Hungarian academic and intellectual life. As early as the mid-1980s, universities in Hungary offered various cours- es in Canadian Studies, which were followed by a large number of publications, con- ferences, and the institutionalization of the field. The article gives a survey of Canadian Studies in Hungary in the international context, showing the ways in which interaction with colleagues in Europe and beyond, and with institutions, such as the Central Euro- pean Association for Canadian Studies, has promoted the work of Hungarian researchers. The article also discusses the fields of interest and individual achievements of Hungarian scholars, as well as the challenges Canadian Studies has faced. Key words: Canadian Studies; Hungary; university; scholarship; research; history The study of Canada by Hungarians is usually considered a recent development compared to academic research on the history and culture of other nations. Howev- er, evidence shows that, in a sense, the history of contacts between the two countries goes back several centuries. -

Robarts Professor of Canadian Studies THIRTEENTH ANNUAL ROBARTS LECTURE 15 MARCH 1999 York University, Toronto, Ontario Robert Wallace is Professor of English and Coordinator of Drama Studies at Glendon College, York University in Toronto, where he has taught for over 30 years. During the 1970s, Prof. Wallace wrote five stage plays, one of which, No Deposit, No Return, was produced off- Broadway in 1975. During this time, he began writing theatre criticism and commentary for a range of newspapers, magazines and academic journals, which he continues to do today. During the 1980s, Prof. Wallace simultaneously edited Canadian Theatre Review and developed an ambitious programme of play publishing for Coach House Press. During the 1980s, Prof. Wallace also contributed commentary and reviews to CBC radio programs including Stereo Morning, State of the Arts, The Arts Tonight and Two New Hours; for CBC-Ideas, he wrote and produced 10 feature documentaries about 20th century performance. Robert Wallace is a recipient of numerous grants and awards including a Canada Council Aid to Artists Grant and a MacLean-Hunter Fellowship in arts journalism. His books include The Work: Conversations with English-Canadian Playwrights (1982, co-written with Cynthia Zimmerman), Quebec Voices (1986), Producing Marginality: Theatre 7 and Criticism in Canada (1990) and Making, Out: Plays by Gay Men (1992). As the Robarts Chair in Canadian Studies at York (1998-99), Prof. Wallace organized and hosted a series of public events titled “Theatre and Trans/formation in Canadian Culture(s)” that united theatre artists, academics and students in lively discussions that informed his ongoing research in the cultural formations of theatre in Canada. -
