"THE ROLE OF THE SOUTH OF FRANCE AND PARIS IN FRENCH CULTURE"

OBJECTIVE: This field and in-class course of study intends to take students back in time to relive France’s glorious past in the French Riviera and the city of Paris. The many landmarks that you will visit are reminiscent of the years that shaped Europe and that left an indelible print on many fields, from architecture to literature to politics.

During the study abroad students will tour historical and natural landmarks of France (mainly South of France and Paris) to gain an understanding of their heritage and a perspective on Europe of the past and present.

This study abroad is a mixture of research and experience first-hand, where students will measure their expectations before arriving on site and will reflect on what they have experienced in the field at the end of the 5 weeks.

****  TEXTBOOK: No textbook required.  REQUIREMENTS: portable device to access documents for the course and do the assignments.

**** EVALUATION:

Participation during the study abroad: (20% of your grade)  This faculty-led trip demands the full and active participation of all students. All lectures, formal tours, seminars and discussion topics are directly linked to the purpose of this field and in-class study in the French culture. Students are expected to actively participate in the cultural discussions in class and guided visits. Students are expected to demonstrate an interest in one or more aspects of the culture presented to them.

Midterm (at home): (40% of your grade)  Essay on two (2) subjects chosen from the list provided to email to your instructor by June 26, 2015 (end of the classes in Nice).

Final (at home): (40% of your grade)  Essay on two (2) subjects chosen from the list provided to email to your instructor by the 31 July 2015. (Subjects must be different than those reported on for the MidTerm)

 Historical track: o The power of the French monarchy o The power of ( in Paris)

 Art track: o Matisse and Picasso in Nice, the impressionists (Musée d’Orsay in Paris), the , o L’Opéra Nationale

 Architecture and Engineering track: o o o The Reims cathedral o The French railway system o The Paris metro system

 Digital media track: o Advertising and Marketing o Movie “To catch a thief” (1955)directed by Hitchcock compared with the movie “Princess Grace” (2014) with Nicole Kidman

 Political science track: o The French Kingdoms (Monaco) and the heritage of the French monarchy (Paris, Versailles) o The French Parliament today

 Hospitality Management track: o French food and wine o Menus o French Restaurants and Cafes

 Intercultural track: o Open to any aspect of the French culture that interests you. These are some possibilities: fashion and famous French manufacturers (perfume factory in Grasse), interview a francophone person living in Nice about the aspects of his/her daily life and overall cultural aspects, imagery and ads around town and in magazines. This track is open to any other intercultural aspect that inspires you during this stay.

FORMAT AND DELIVERY OF THE ASSIGNMENTS: For every subject that you chose you will write essays in French. • For the MidTerm, you must write two double-spaced pages minimum per subject • For the Final, you must write three double-spaced pages minimum per subject. o For both the Midterm and the Final you must substantiate your work with relevant pictures that you will take during your stay. You can upload your documents on Canvas on our account for this course.
