But many weeks after the final whistle, memories of this wonderful football event are still vivid in our minds. An event enjoyed by millions which earned Germany the sympathy of the entire world. Sönke Wortmann’s much-praised film titled “Germany – a summer dream” aptly describes the atmosphere felt throughout the country from 9 June to 9 July 2006. Allen (Madison) Abstract While nation-branding campaigns have become a popular means for governments to attempt to improve their country’s standing on international indexes, such as the Anholt-Gfk Roper Nation Brand Index (NBI), the generally static ranking on such indexes suggests that national brands cannot simply be shaped by clever marketing campaigns. Instead, national brands rest on deeply rooted perceptions of a country’s character and identity, which often have much in common with popular stereotypes about the country. This article analyzes how several adver- tising campaigns in Germany and Denmark, sponsored by both governmental entities and private corporations, explicitly engage with and manipulate positive national stereotypes in order to shape public narratives about what their countries have to offer the world. 1 Introduction In the two decades since British marketer Simon Anholt coined the term nation branding in 1996, dozens of countries have made significant expenditures of time and money to improve their national brands, often by hiring expensive consultants and commissioning new logos, brochures, and advertisements. Although originally conceived as a marketing practice, nation branding has become a form of public diplomacy, which aims to build, manage, and improve a country’s image in the eyes of both domestic and foreign target audiences (Bassey 2012: 1). Unlike many international cultural relations (ICR) policies, however, which are intended to develop “we-feeling (collective identity)” (Aoki-Okabe et al. 2006: 14) within a national pop- ulation, nation branding efforts tend to be outward-oriented efforts that transmit a particular image of a given country beyond its own borders.

The Culture of Remembrance of World War II and the Holocaust in Unified Germany Christoph Thonfeld* Abstract Since the 1990s, Germany has dealt with the difficult integration of collective and individual memories from East and West Germany. Alongside the publicly more prominent remembrances of perpetration has occurred an upsurge in the memories of German suffering. At the same time, Europe has increasingly become a point of reference for national cultures of remembrance. These developments have been influenced by post-national factors such as Europeanisation and transnationalisation along with the emergence of a more multicultural society. However, there have also been strong trends toward renationalisation and normalisation. The last twenty years have witnessed a type of interaction with the ‘other’ as constructively recognised; while at the same time it is also excluded by renationalising trends. Researchers have described the combination of the latter two trends as the cosmopolitanisation of memory. This article adopts the diachronic perspective to assess the preliminary results since 1990 of the actual working of this cosmopolitanisation process within the culture of remembrance of World War II and its aftermath in Germany. For this to continue, it is essential that the Bundesliga be placed on a sound economic footing, and German professional football is therefore committed to sustainability, stability and above all to the highest possible transparency. The Bundesliga’s economic position is pretty impressive, particularly when seen in contrast with other top European leagues: any number of European clubs are facing considerable financial problems, but the Bundesliga as a whole has a sound equity base to fall back on. A balanced mix of income from media rights, sponsorships and gate receipts makes the professional German clubs less vulnerable to income shortfalls in any one area. Despite the difficult economic environment, the League Association’s 36 clubs and joint stock companies achieved record revenue for the fifth time in a row in the 2008–09 season at €2.03 billion. This is a rise of 5.3 % over the 2007–08 season, and has also benefited the country: the clubs and joint stock companies paid over €683 million in direct taxes and other duties, the highest ever in the history of professional football. The first ever comprehensive study of the economic impact of profes- sional football has now been presented. The management consulting firm McKinsey & Company has provided a well substantiated factual base for the public debate on the economic significance of professional football.

The examinations of perceptions were obtained through interviews of German football fans from both western and eastern regions, including SV Werder Bremen club officials. The findings suggest that national pride has become an increasingly prominent feature in a unified Germany following the hosting of the 2006 FIFA World Cup. It is also argued here that immigration in German society has positively impacted the German national soccer team. However, there are some recurrent and seemingly problematic issues in German society pertaining to immigration and religious identity. Some fans and officials consider the promotion of national team manager Joachim Löw as a catalyst in the subsequent success of the national team in Rio in 2014, impacting the development of German football from 2000.

Methodologically, it uses scholarly literature, media sources, and publications from non-governmental organizations to examine the translation of nation branding into real world situations. A historical analysis of Germany is used to examine how the nation has dealt with its identity in the past. This is contrasted with the manner in which nation branding has aided the redevelopment of German identity since its 1990 reunification – both internally among its citizens, as well as externally from foreign perspectives.
