Footballers with Migration Background in the German National Football Team
“It is about the flag on your chest!” Footballers with Migration Background in the German National Football Team. A matter of inclusion? An Explorative Case Study on Nationalism, Integration and National Identity. Oscar Brito Capon Master Thesis in Sociology Department of Sociology and Human Geography Faculty of Social Sciences University of Oslo June 2012 Oscar Brito Capon - Master Thesis in Sociology 2 Oscar Brito Capon - Master Thesis in Sociology Foreword Dear reader, the present research work represents, on one hand, my dearest wish to contribute to the understanding of some of the effects that the exclusionary, ethnocentric notions of nationhood and national belonging – which have characterized much of western European thinking throughout history – have had on individuals who do not fit within the preconceived frames of national unity and belonging with which most Europeans have been operating since the foundation of the nation-state approximately 140 years ago. On the other hand, this research also represents my personal journey to understand better my role as a citizen, a man, a father and a husband, while covered by a given aura of otherness, always reminding me of my permanent foreignness in the country I decided to make my home. In this sense, this has been a personal journey to learn how to cope with my new ascribed identity as an alien (my ‘labelled forehead’) without losing my essence in the process, and without forgetting who I also am and have been. This journey has been long and tough in many forms, for which I would like to thank the help I have received from those who have been accompanying my steps all along. -

The Economic Impact of the Bundesliga the Significance of Professional Football for the German Economy
The economic impacT s ummary of a report by of The Bundesliga McKinsey & Company, inc. The significance of professional football for the German economy The economic impact of the Bundesliga The significance of professional football for the German economy f oreword People the world over are enthralled by the Bundesliga week after week. For this to continue, it is essential that the Bundesliga be placed on a sound economic footing, and German professional football is therefore committed to sustainability, stability and above all to the highest possible transparency. The Bundesliga’s economic position is pretty impressive, particularly when seen in contrast with other top European leagues: any number of European clubs are facing considerable financial problems, but the Bundesliga as a whole has a sound equity base to fall back on. A balanced mix of income from media rights, sponsorships and gate receipts makes the professional German clubs less vulnerable to income shortfalls in any one area. Despite the difficult economic environment, the League Association’s 36 clubs and joint stock companies achieved record revenue for the fifth time in a row in the 2008–09 season at €2.03 billion. This is a rise of 5.3 % over the 2007–08 season, and has also benefited the country: the clubs and joint stock companies paid over €683 million in direct taxes and other duties, the highest ever in the history of professional football. The first ever comprehensive study of the economic impact of profes- sional football has now been presented. The management consulting firm McKinsey & Company has provided a well substantiated factual base for the public debate on the economic significance of professional football. -

MLS as a Sports Product – the Prominence of the World’s Game in the U.S. April 8, 2021 Abstract The purpose of this Working Paper is to analyze how soccer at the professional level in the U.S., with Major League Soccer as a focal point, has developed over the span of a quarter of a century. It is worthwhile to examine the growth of MLS from its first game in 1996 to where the league currently stands as a business as it moves past its 25th anniversary. The 1994 World Cup (held in the U.S.) and the subsequent implementation of MLS as a U.S. professional league exerted a major positive influence on soccer participation and fandom in the U.S. Consequently, more importance was placed on soccer in the country’s culture. The research reported here explores the league’s evolution and development through the cohesion existing between its sporting and business development, as well as its performance. -
