  • UEFA Champions League Museum
MUSEUM INDEX 1 INTRODUCTION/04 2 BEST CLUBS/10 3 BEST FINALS/17 4 BEST PLAYERS/22 5 ROAD TO WEMBLEY/54 1 INTRODUCTION INTRODUCTION Since the competition was founded as the European Champions Clubs’ Cup over half a century ago, only 22 clubs and 515 players have won it. But, in doing so, they and their opponents have left us an incredibly rich heritage of magic moments. You might not be old enough to remember Alfredo Di Stéfano’s Real Madrid, Eusébio’s Benfica, Johan Cruyff’s Ajax or Franz Beckenbauer’s Bayern back in the days when clubs established dynasties by successfully defending the European crown – something no team has yet managed to do since the competition became the UEFA Champions League in 1992. And exactly what is it that sticks in your mind? Is it a micro-second of breathtaking skill like Zinédine Zidane’s sublime volley in the 2002 final? Do you focus on a wider time-span, such as Manchester United’s three-minute comeback in Barcelona in 1999? Maybe it’s not an image at all, but the sheer drama of a penalty shoot-out. Or perhaps it’s an emotion rather than an image. The Museum of Champions offers you memorabilia and images to inspire memories and help you to re-live the special emotions created by the world’s top club competition. CREDITS Designwerk Event Branding and Design act3 Event Production Die Firma Print, Production and Build Hanot GABRIEL 1954 THE Founder It may be a statement of the obvious that founder of the ‘European Cup’ was a man of vision.

  • Why South Africa Received the 2010 FIFA World Cup
Africa's place in the International Football System - Why South Africa received the 2010 FIFA World Cup By Mark-Marcel Muller Thesis presented in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts International Studies at the University of Stellenbosch Supervisor: Dr Janis van der W esthuizen Department Political Science University of Stellenbosch March 2007 Stellenbosch University https://scholar.sun.ac.za Declaration I, the un{4.ersigned. M4-.r:".~ ~ JMr.~(. /!..~ /ft:C ..... .. hereby declare that the work contained in this thesis is my own original work and that I have not previously submitted it in its entirety or in part at any university for a degree Date Stellenbosch University https://scholar.sun.ac.za Abstract For millions of people around the globe, football is an important part of every-day life. Similarly, many African governments have found in international football competitions one of the few opportunities to be internationally represented. Furthermore, through successful participation of their respective national football sides, they internally seek to foster nationhood. In fact, football is an integral part of African self-esteem with regards to being recognised by the rest of the world. However, to succeed in international sports means to succeed in a politico-economic structure far from equality and general solidarity. This thesis goes about the question why South Africa received the FIFA 2010 World Cup. Thereby it will distinguish the position of the African continent within the international football system. This mega sport event which takes place every four years receives global attention. For a nation to be chosen by the world football body FIFA to host this event elevates a nation to an equal participant in the international community.

While Istanbul prepared to host the last UEFA Cup final before the competition's rebirth as the UEFA Europa League, the long tradition of Wednesday evening finals in the champions' competition would come to an end a week later at the Olympic Stadium in Rome. This air of nostalgia brought back a host of memories as we recalled the courage and perceptiveness of those who launched these competitions at a time when travelling around Europe was still a great adventure, the wisdom of the administrators who knew how to develop these competitions and gradually adapt them to new conditions and demands, and, of course, the memorable matches and the exploits of the players who have written the history of these competitions and acquired worldwide renown in the process. However, although football feeds on nostalgia, it does not depend on it: IN THIS ISSUE what makes it move forward and keep on developing is the thrill of new challenges, a sensation that was also felt at the finals in Rome and Istanbul, in anticipation Interviú Madrid win the of the changes that are set to give fresh impetus to our club competitions.
