The Heart of The Foundation ...

2012 Annual Report … Is the Region That We Serve.

People are the lifeblood of Saint Francis Foundation. They provide the commitment and passion that serve as building blocks for an organization dedicated to supporting a greater cause. Our efforts extend to communities in a five-state region, creating a powerful framework of talent and resources that bring a healing touch to those in need. 3 Children’s Rooftop Garden Becomes a Reality and a Respite to Patients and Their Families

The Children’s Rooftop Garden at Saint Francis Medical Center is a wonderful place for children and their families to visit to reduce stress during a hospital stay. Its peaceful paved garden walk, bubbling fountain, covered gazebo and soothing music all offer solace and serenity. The garden was made possible by the funding and efforts of Saint Francis Foundation, The Friends of Saint Francis, Saint Francis Auxiliary and many generous individual donors.

4 5 Partnership Makes Saint Francis Foundation Strong

Dear Friends,

Thanks to the passionate involvement of supporters like you and professional management by members of the Saint Francis Medical Center team, there has never been a better time for Saint Francis Foundation.

We have successfully integrated the important community activities of the Foundation with the Medical Center to a unified identity. Recognizing that today’s healthcare environment is more complicated than ever, we have not strayed from the Franciscan Sisters’ original mission to provide a ministry of healing and wellness inspired by our Christian philosophy and values.

We are proud to present two of the region’s most successful golf outings, and our Foundation family truly makes a difference through initiatives such as the Dig For Life campaign and fundraising for the Children’s Rooftop Garden. The rapid growth of Pink Up Cape™ is a tribute to the coordination of our Foundation Board, Foundation Staff and Marketing team.

The strength of the Foundation lies in the leaders who comprise the Foundation, Auxiliary and Friends Boards of Directors. Not only are these individuals active participants in those organizations, they take their roles a step further by communicating our mission throughout the community and providing feedback from a regional perspective.

In this Annual Report, you will read about other special individuals who contribute to the Foundation’s success, and meet some of the many people who benefit from its resources. On behalf of Saint Francis Medical Center, thank you to everyone who contributes their time, talents and financial resources in helping us further our mission every day.

Steven C. Bjelich, FACHE-D President and Chief Executive Officer Saint Francis Healthcare System

6 Positive Energy Powers Foundation Efforts

Saint Francis Foundation enjoyed its best year ever on many levels in 2012, continuing the wave of momentum that supports Saint Francis Medical Center’s mission to serve the residents of our region. We have a compelling story to tell, and our supporters are enthusiastic ambassadors of that message.

Our successful events and campaigns complement the generous gifts from our donors to bring services and support to those who need them most. You will read captivating accounts in this report of people directly impacted by the Foundation’s efforts, and learn about the motivation of those who find satisfaction in helping these great stories come to life.

The boundless energy and passion of countless dedicated individuals power our drive to secure financial support for medical technology, scholarships and a variety of projects that benefit patients and families. The positive feedback we receive tells us there is a greater level of understanding than ever regarding the Foundation’s mission as we strive to make a difference.

The Foundation, Auxiliary and Friends Boards of Directors have an intense focus on taking Saint Francis Foundation to the next level. They generously share of their time and talents to raise funds and generate awareness for causes that benefit the health of the entire region.

One of our great successes this year is the creation of a wonderful benefit for patients outside of Cape Girardeau. The Foundation assisted in helping the Medical Center earn a $260,000 grant from the United States Department of Agriculture to purchase equipment for the region’s first telestroke and teletrauma program. This grant aligns with Saint Francis’ strategic objective to serve patients in remote areas.

With so much education, expertise and talent already in place, the Foundation stands ready to support the organization as continues expanding its role as a regional healthcare leader. Thank you to all of our friends for a successful year, and we look forward to a spectacular 2013.

Linda H. Decker Executive Director Saint Francis Foundation 7 Foundation Connects Donors With a Cause

My role as Saint Francis Foundation Board president allows me to experience first-hand the energy that builds throughout the community when a project touches an emotional chord. That was the case this past year with the long-awaited completion of the Children’s Rooftop Garden at Saint Francis Medical Center.

The Children’s Rooftop Garden is part of the total healing process at Saint Francis. This beautiful complement to the region’s best healthcare – provided by the Medical Center’s doctors, nurses and support staff – includes water features that operate year-round, statues, flowers, benches and paths.

One of the main reasons I became involved with the Foundation Board four years ago was a desire to contribute to efforts that benefit hospitalized children and their families. Seeing children and their families enjoy the garden tells me that all the fundraising and volunteering within the Saint Francis Family is making a real difference in people’s lives.

The Foundation Board has stepped up its level of energy and engagement over the past few years, making it more enjoyable than ever to initiate relationships with prospective donors and reconnect with existing donors. We are working hard to promote the mission of Saint Francis, and we look forward to continuing our role as liaisons between the Medical Center and the community.

Saint Francis Benefits From Rev. Duffner’s Generosity

Rev. Ralph Duffner exemplifies the giving spirit that strengthens Saint Francis Foundation. A generous, joyful man with a positive outlook on life, Duffner used the stipends he received for celebrating Mass in the Saint Francis Chapel to purchase a beautiful statue of Jesus surrounded by children that he donated to the garden.

Duffner also donates much of the state pension he receives from his time working at a tuberculosis clinic in Mt. Vernon to Saint Francis Foundation. He delights in bringing comfort and joy to hospitalized children. “If I can make a child smile or laugh, then that is the best medicine I can give,” he says.

17 Saint Francis Foundation Digs Pink During Breast Cancer Month

Few health-related issues generate more passion than breast cancer. The benefits of early detection and the fact that most everyone knows someone who has battled this disease make breast cancer a natural fit for two highly successful Saint Francis Foundation grassroots campaigns.

The Pink Up Cape™ campaign raises awareness of breast cancer and encourages women ages 40 and older to get annual mammograms during National Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October, while Dig for Life features a series of fundraisers to provide free mammograms for patients who cannot otherwise afford them. The campaigns provide opportunities for individuals, organizations, sports teams and businesses to take positive action and make a difference in the lives of women throughout the region.

For Olivia Aranha, MD, PhD, medical oncologist/ hematologist and Medical Partner at Saint Francis, the fight against breast cancer has a personal as well as professional focus. “I have lost close friends to the disease and cannot stress enough the importance of early detection and screening,” she said during Saint Francis’ annual Pink Ribbon Breast Cancer Awareness Luncheon. “Every loved one I lose further strengthens my resolve to fiercely fight the disease and educate every woman about the importance of an annual mammogram.”

19 Growth of ‘Dig for Life’ Benefits More Women

Dig for Life is the brainchild of former Southeast Missouri State University women’s volleyball coach Cindy Gannon, who initiated the program following her mother’s death from breast cancer. The program originally centered on the concept of players securing pledges per dig for home matches in October – a dig is a defensive maneuver that keeps the ball alive after a spike by the opponent – but since then has expanded to include multiple fundraising activities.

SEMO athletic teams continue to be a major player in the success of Dig for Life, including sports outside of volleyball. Businesses and private donors also continue joining the team, and numerous high school teams have accepted the Dig for Life challenge by sponsoring or participating in pink-themed events.

Swim Teams ‘Splash Out Cancer’ Dayna Powell, Cape Central High School girls swim coach Swimmers from high schools throughout the region sell “Splash Out Cancer” T-shirts, with the proceeds benefitting Dig for Life. “We wanted to be able to contribute to the community,” says Dayna Powell, Cape Central girls swim coach. “My girls really enjoyed it. They wore the shirts to school, and a lot of their families got involved, too.”

Breast Cancer a Slam Dunk for Girls Tournament

The annual Coaches vs. Cancer Shootout girls basketball tournament at Charleston High School raises money for Dig for Life each January. Players solicit donations prior to the event, and proceeds from concessions and raffle items, including the pink basketball used in competition, add to the cause. “The players really get involved,” says coach Josh Thompson. “As young women, they know there is a chance they will get breast cancer in their lives.”

Close to 40 area businesses and 20 regional schools participated in Dig for Life this year, with fundraising totals setting a new record. Nearly 2,000 women have received mammograms through Dig for Life since 2000, and Saint Francis physicians have confirmed eight cases of breast Josh Thompson, Charleston High School girls basketball coach cancer as a direct result of these free mammograms.

Mammograms Are a Blessing for Women in Need

Vickie Bowman’s medical history is a worst-case scenario “I called to see if this was for real, because I had been when it comes to obtaining health insurance. Diagnosed paying out of pocket for mammograms since 1990,” with breast cancer in 1990 at the age of 30 and uterine Bowman recalls. “The Dig for Life program became a cancer in 2007, Bowman is a two-time survivor who blessing for me. 21 22 The Power of Pink

The momentum of Pink Up Cape™ has extended beyond Cape Girardeau in its brief history to include communities such as Jackson and Poplar Bluff. Country music artist Candy Coburn, who grew up in Dexter and watched her grandmother battle breast cancer for 10 years, contributed to the 2012 campaign by appearing at the kickoff event and performing her hit song, “Pink Warrior.” The Pink Up Cape Choir also made its debut at the kickoff. Led by Brian Crisman of Lynwood Baptist Church, the choir featured nearly 80 singers from three choirs in the Cape Girardeau area.

Businesses large and small throughout the region “pink up” during October. Macy’s in Cape Girardeau’s West Park Mall not only pinks up the store, it promotes Pink Night Out as one of the Girls Night Out events in its cosmetics department. The event features plenty of pink among the variety of colors and styles of lipstick, blush and eye shadow available. “It’s always fun when customers come in and get their makeup done, but everyone had an even better time knowing that a portion of the proceeds went to Dig for Life,” says Kriss McLeod, vice president and store manager.

23 Charitable Gift Planning Creates Long-term Benefits

Mickey and Susan Roper are experts at helping Saint Francis Medical Center with immediate needs while keeping an eye on the future. Their willingness to leverage a variety of charitable gift strategies will create a positive impact well beyond their lifetimes. It is this type of long- range view that enables Saint Francis Foundation to build a solid asset base for future generations.

“We are giving in many ways, both time and money,” Susan says. “It doesn’t have to be millions of dollars. There are so many ways to help, and the Foundation is creative about how you can give and what you can give.”

Susan’s desire to serve began with pushing patients in wheelchairs and grew to include serving as a volunteer chaplain when she saw there was a need. Mickey followed in his father’s footsteps by serving on the Saint Francis Board of Directors. “I think everyone should consider giving to what has been important in their life,” he says. “You should give to something for which you have a passion.”

For , that passion includes meeting the healthcare needs of the community. The couple purchased pavers that helped bring the Children’s Rooftop Garden to life, and help aspiring nurses pay for school through the Bernadean Campbell Memorial Scholarship, established in Susan’s mother’s name.

Through The Heritage Society, the Ropers will leave a financial legacy by listing Saint Francis Foundation as the beneficiary on their IRA. The tax laws behind these types of strategies can be confusing. That’s why the Foundation brought together local attorneys and financial advisors last year for a successful Lunch and Learn event entitled “Protect Your Assets and Leave a Legacy.”

“Most people think they have to give today,” Susan says. “You certainly can give now, but to be able to give after you’re gone is wonderful.”

24 The Heritage Society Donors

Saint Francis Foundation created The Heritage Society in 1993 to honor friends who have remembered Saint Francis in their estate plans. These donors have made a special commitment to the mission of the Medical Center through their perpetual gifts, which touch both present and future generations.

27 Couple’s Gift Keeps Their Daughter’s Spirit Alive

Ken and Rita Aufdenberg have turned their nightmare into a lasting tribute to a daughter who only wanted to help people.

The Aufdenbergs endowed the Christen Joyel Aufdenberg Memorial Scholarship soon after the tragic death of their only child in a 1997 traffic accident. Their gift contributes to the two dozen $2,000 scholarships awarded each year through the Saint Francis Foundation and Auxiliary Healthcare Scholarship Program.

Christen Aufdenberg was just shy of her 20th birthday and on her way home from Shawnee Community College in Ullin, Ill., where she had just been accepted into the nursing program. The driver of a car heading the opposite direction lost control and crossed the centerline. Christen died instantly in the crash, but her legacy lives on thanks to her parents’ gift.

“It did not feel right spending the money on ourselves to buy things,” Ken Aufdenberg says of the insurance claim. “We wanted something that would live on; a legacy that would live on and help other people.”

“We wanted to keep her memory alive, and the scholarship was one of the options we looked at,” adds Rita. “It just fell into place. Christen was a caretaker type of person, so we wanted someone to get the benefit from that.”

The Aufdenbergs selected Saint Francis Foundation as the appropriate place for the scholarship because Christen had worked in the Medical Center’s Oncology Department after earning her certified nursing assistant (CNA) license.

The couple soon found that the more they donated to worthy causes, the more abundance came into their lives. With that in mind, they commissioned an area sculptor to craft an angelic statue in Christen’s honor for the Medical Center’s Healing Arts Garden.

The sculpture and scholarship combine to shine a ray of joy on an otherwise sad chapter in their lives.

“It just makes you feel good that you are helping somebody else, especially somebody that needs a little help,” Ken says. “This gift lives on. That is what we like about it.”

28 Scholarship Help Is a Blessing for Nursing Student

Stephanie Nanney’s educational and life journey is an ideal match for the Christen Joyel Aufdenberg Memorial Scholarship.

Nanney began her career in 2004 as a certified nursing assistant (CNA) in Saint Francis Medical Center’s Neurosciences Institute. She continued her education part-time following the birth of her son, Jason, in the fall of 2007, and went on to earn her licensed practical nurse (LPN) designation the day after the birth of her daughter, Raelin, in September 2009.

“The nurse administrator brought me my diploma in my hospital bed,” Nanney recalls fondly. “So everything worked out just fine.”

Now she is on track to earn her degree in May as a registered nurse (RN) from Three Rivers Community College in Poplar Bluff. The $2,000 scholarship brings welcome relief during an already-stressful period. The Saint Francis Foundation and Auxiliary Healthcare Scholarship Committee awards scholarships annually based on financial need.

“I want to stay in neurology for at least a couple more years,” Nanney says. “This (RN degree) will allow me to take on a charge role and a heavier patient load, plus it will greatly increase my pay. The scholarship made it a lot easier for me to reach this goal.”

29 Guardian Angel Program Gives Patients and Families a Way to Say “Thank You”

Tammy Hahn-Brown, MSN, RN, ONC, CS-ANP, knows all about providing compassionate care to seriously ill patients in her role as coordinator of the Palliative Care Program at Saint Francis Medical Center. When she and her family found themselves on the receiving end of that care during her father’s end-of-life journey through emergency surgery and cancer treatments, they showed their appreciation through the Guardian Angel program.

“I can truly say that the skill and professionalism and kindness of the staff shown to my dad was nothing but a perfect example of what Saint Francis represents and strives for,” Tammy wrote in her letter to Jennifer Hanks, RN, Patient Care Manager of the Surgical Intensive Care Unit. “My family and I will forever be grateful to my Saint Francis Family for the wonderful care they provided to my dad during this difficult time.”

The Guardian Angel program allows patients and families to recognize Saint Francis caregivers by making a donation in their name. The Medical Center receives funds for equipment and services, and caregivers receive a Guardian Angel pin as a symbol of that recognition. “The angel they Physiatrist Heidi J. Hunter, MD, and her therapy dog, Buddy, PALS- trained and a Canine Good Citizen, are adding a new dimension of wear on their name badge reminds them why they chose energy and much-needed variety to patient rehabilitation. their profession: to help people,” explains Heidi J. Hunter, MD, physiatrist at Saint Francis and medical director of Inpatient Rehabilitation Services.

“When families ask me what they can do to say thank you, I always refer them to the Guardian Angel program,” Dr. Hunter says. “Its streamlined approach helps them allocate their funds to the specific unit they want to recognize. If you want to congratulate and thank Saint Francis for a job well done, this is the best way to do it.”

30 Medical Staff Supports Foundation’s Vision

Saint Francis Medical Center is more than a workplace for the many Medical Staff members who take an active role in Employees at Saint Francis generously volunteer their time at the Saint Francis Foundation 2012 Heart to Heart Luncheon for women. events. Wendi M. Carns, Wendi M. Carns, MD, MD, FACOG, obstetrician/ FACOG, Obstetrician/ gynecologist and Medical Gynecologist Partner at Saint Francis, provides a good example through her work with the Foundation’s annual Heart to Heart Luncheon. The event educates women about their heart health through screen- ings, informational booths and guest speakers.

“As women, we typically take care of everyone else – our children, spouse, parents and friends – A medical staff volunteer gives helpful heart health information to a and not ourselves,” Dr. Carns says. “The luncheon Heart to Heart Luncheon attendee. gives women permission to take an hour out of their day to take care of themselves. It is important for the next generation – for their daughters – to see that.”

The 2012 event featured Janet Bond Brill, PhD, RD, LDN, bestselling author and health expert, who shared her wisdom about health, wellness and cardiovascular disease prevention. The event’s proceeds support the Foundation’s Cardiac Rehabilitation Scholarship fund, which benefits female cardiac patients in need of financial assistance.

Saint Francis physicians contribute their resources and talents in a variety of ways to support the Foundation and the Medical Center. For example, the physicians of 1875 Founder’s Society member Cape Anesthesia Group collaborated on a gift that benefitted the Children’s Rooftop Garden. Likewise, contributions made by the physicians of Cape Medical Oncology to honor the retirement of colleague Stanley Sides, MD, FACP, funded an additional scholarship for the Saint Francis Foundation and Auxiliary Healthcare Scholarship Program. Cape Medical Oncology colleagues Olivia Aranha, MD, PhD, and Stanley Sides, MD, FACP

31 1875 Founder’s Society Members 1875 Through the strong support and financial contributions of the 1875 Founder’s Society, the FOUNDER’S Medical Center is able to continue to offer convenient access to advanced technologies and SOCIETY leading-edge services.
