Hymn 420 When in our music God is glorified Engelberg 1. When in our music God is glorified, 3. So has the Church, in liturgy and song, and adoration leaves no room for pride, in faith and love, through centuries of wrong, it is as though the whole creation cried borne witness to the truth in every tongue, Alleluia! Alleluia!

2. How often, making music, we have found 4. And did not Jesus sing a psalm that night a new dimension in the world of sound, when utmost evil strove against the Light? as worship moved us to a more profound Then let us sing, for whom he won the fight, Alleluia! Alleluia! 5. Let every instrument be tuned for praise! Let all rejoice who have a voice to raise!

And may God give us faith to sing always Alleluia! Amen.

Psalm 111 (choir) Confitebor tibi : R. Woodward I will give thanks unto the Lord with my whole heart * secretly among the faithful, and in the congregation. The works of the Lord are great * sought out of all them that have pleasure therein. His work is worthy to be praised, and had in honour * and his righteousness endureth for ever. 2 The merciful and gracious Lord hath so done his marvellous works * that they ought to be had in remembrance. He hath given meat unto them that fear him * he shall ever be mindful of his covenant. He hath shewed his people the power of his works * that he may give them the heritage of the heathen. The works of his hands are verity and judgement * all his commandments are true. They stand fast for ever and ever * and are done in truth and equity. He sent redemption unto his people * he hath commanded his covenant for ever; holy and reverend is his Name. The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom * a good understanding have all they that do thereafter; the praise of it endureth for ever.

THE LESSONS

The First Lesson: Isaiah 43:8-13 Bring forth the people who are blind, yet have eyes, who are deaf, yet have ears! Let all the nations gather together, and let the peoples assemble. Who among them declared this, and foretold to us the former things? Let them bring their witnesses to justify them, and let them hear and say, ‘It is true.’ You are my witnesses, says the Lord, and my servant whom I have chosen, so that you may know and believe me and understand that I am he. Before me no god was formed, nor shall there be any after me. I, I am the Lord, and besides me there is no saviour. I declared and saved and proclaimed, when there was no strange god among you; and you are my witnesses, says the Lord. I am God, and also henceforth I am He; there is no one who can deliver from my hand; I work and who can hinder it?

3 Magnificat (choir) Evening Canticles in D major Sir Herbert Brewer

My soul doth magnify the Lord: and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour. For He hath regarded: the lowliness of His handmaiden. For behold, from henceforth: all generations shall call me blessed. For He that is mighty hath magnified me: and holy is His Name. And His mercy is on them that fear Him: throughout all generations. He hath shewed strength with His arm: He hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts. He hath put down the mighty from their seat: and hath exalted the humble and meek. He hath filled the hungry with good things: and the rich He hath sent empty away. He rememb’ring His mercy hath holpen His servant Israel: as He promised to our forefathers, Abraham and his seed for ever. (Luke 1:46-55)

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be: world without end. Amen.

The Second Lesson: John 14:1-7

Jesus said: ‘Do not let your hearts be troubled. Believe in God, believe also in me. In my Father’s house there are many dwelling-places. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, so that where I am, there you may be also. And you know the way to the place where I am going.’ Thomas said to him, ‘Lord, we do not know where you are going. How can we know the way?’ Jesus said to him, ‘I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. If you know me, you will know my Father also. From now on you do know him and have seen him.’

Lector: The Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God.

Nunc dimittis (choir) Evening Canticles in D major Sir Herbert Brewer

Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace: according to thy word. For mine eyes have seen thy salvation, which thou hast prepared: before the face of all people; to be a light to lighten the Gentiles: and to be the glory of thy people Israel. (Luke 2:29-32)

The Apostles’ Creed (said together)

I believe in God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth; And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven, and sitteth at the right hand of God the Father almighty. From thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead.

4 I believe in the Holy Ghost, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

A Word From the Canon Organist After almost six very happy years at Grace, it is with mixed emotion to write that today is my last Sunday. Grace and Charleston will remain a special place for Sarah, myself and our three children, who have all been born here.

I have very much enjoyed working with all the choirs, as has Sarah with her work as a staff singer and as the chorister vocal coach. There have been many great musical moments and highlights over the years with services/choir concerts, our choir tour to Duke University Chapel and having the opportunity to host some of England's finest choirs in concert.

It is however a sad time to leave with most of our choir members at home since the Covid out- break. I have very much missed our regular routine of weekly or monthly rehearsals and services. And as a result of Covid, it is also a great shame that I never got the choirs to Washington Na- tional and Salisbury Cathedrals, as booked and planned - something so many of us were very much looking forward to. However, we are seeing things improve and while every church will need to go through some sort of rebuilding from Covid, we can all be confident that Music at Grace will continue to flourish and thrive!

I wish to conclude by thanking so many of you for your communications of support and appreci- ation of the music over my time here, and for the many kindnesses you have shown my family. If your travels bring you to Boston you will be most welcome at the Church of the Redeemer in Chestnut Hill. Please let me know! www.redeemerchestnuthill.org

Wishing you all our warmest wishes and good health, Nigel, Sarah, Sophie, Jeremy and baby Adrian
