Pattern Book(7.42MB) WELCOME 1 It is a pleasure to share with you the Hong Kong Pattern Book for our 2020/21 racing season. Hong Kong provides world class racing, with international prestige and lucrative rewards across 31 Pattern races, including 12 elite Group 1 features. We welcome and encourage global participation. All of our Group races are open to overseas entries and international challengers have enjoyed great success at our two flagship occasions, the LONGINES Hong Kong International Races on the second Sunday in December, and FWD Champions Day on the last Sunday in April. This season, the base prize fund for our Group WELCOME 1 races has increased by HK$2 million, with a new minimum of HK$12 million up to a high of HK$28 million for December’s LONGINES Hong Kong Cup, the world’s richest 2000m turf race. The LONGINES Hong Kong International Races, dating back to 1988, are established firmly as the world racing’s year-end highlight and are the pinnacle of Hong Kong’s season, drawing elite contenders from around the globe. This season, the LONGINES Hong Kong Sprint is worth a record HK$22 million and reclaims its status as the world’s most richly-endowed Group 1 turf sprint, while the HK$25 million LONGINES Hong Kong Mile (1600m) is the most lucrative turf mile; the HK$20 million LONGINES Hong Kong Vase (2400m) and the LONGINES Hong Kong Cup’s alluring prize bring the day’s big-race total purse to HK$95 million. FWD Champions Day hosts three Group 1 features; the HK$25 million FWD QEII Cup, the HK$20 million FWD Champions Mile and the HK$18 million Chairman’s Sprint Prize. The event was introduced in 2018 as a second major international Group 1 showcase occasion at Sha Tin, and its success has made it one of Asia’s biggest race days. This season, as part of an overall HK$1.4 billion prize fund, we have also increased the prize money for all Group 2 and Group 3 races; our Group 2 races are now worth HK$4.5 million and our Group 3 races carry a value of HK$3.5 million. Hong Kong’s Pattern race programme begins with two contests which are often the starting point for our Group 1 stars, the Group 3 Celebration Cup (1400m) on 27th September, and the Group 3 National Day Cup (1000m) on 1st October. Please do not hesitate to reach out to me or our team with any questions you might have. As ever, we look forward to welcoming you to Hong Kong during the season. Blazing Speed proved narrowly best over Military Attack in the 2014 running of the Longines Jockey Club Cup, but the 7-year-old, who has had his fair share of age-related problems, turned back the time at least one more time and turned the tables in Saturday’s renewal. • The Cathay Pacific Hong Kong International Races 2008 – the Turf World Championships
Welcome to the Cathay Pacific Hong Kong International Races 2008 – The Turf World Championships. This year’s CXHKIR will welcome its largest ever number of global racing stars to Sha Tin on Sunday, 14 December. Four G1 races, worth a combined HK$62m (approx. US$8m) in stakes, have invited a record 37 international runners to join 18 of the very best from Hong Kong. Sixteen individual G1 winners are present from 11 racing jurisdictions overall. In the FORM GUIDE of each race, the PERFORMANCE ANALYSIS table provides you with a bird-eye's view of the race. This at-a-glance guide gives you a full form summary of the horses in a simple and concise table. Another handy tool is the INTERNATIONAL RATINGS CHART. In weight-for-age races like the Cathay Pacific HKIR, generally speaking, the higher a horse's rating, which is based on racing performance, the better its chance to win. A preliminary SPEED CHART has been included to assist in identifying likely positions in running. Please note that this is preliminary only and the full Speed Map will be available after barrier draw in the SpeedPOWER Form Guide on www.hkjc.com/english/formguide/formguide.asp. If you need further information and analysis, just flip over to the next section where you will find the COMPREHENSIVE PAST PERFORMANCE of the horses. Also included is the FORM ANALYSIS, which highlights the notable achievements and racing characteristics of each horse. Another feature is the RATINGS HISTORY CHART. This chart indicates the quality and consistency of a horse's previous 10 starts through a graphical illustration of the ratings achieved in these races.

Class 1 is the highest class • Runners in each race are of the same Class • Rating determines the Class – the higher the Rating, the higher the Class • A new horse usually starts with a Rating of 52 (southern hemisphere-born) or 57 (northern hemisphere-born). Generally speaking, 5 - 7 points will be added to the Rating for each win • It goes both ways: o Top 4 in race = points added o Losing in race = points deducted CLASS AND RATING HANDICAP • Most races in Hong Kong are handicaps, which means runners carry different weights during the race, making the races more exciting • Handicap is a way to equalise the horses’ chances of winning by adding more weights to runners with higher Ratings.
