Few horses have come to this jurisdiction with the expectations--or, indeed, the price tag--of Akeed Mofeed, who was a five-length maiden winner and narrow runner-up in the G2 Beresford S. at two when trained by John Oxx for owner Jaber Abdullah. Akeed Mofeed was snapped up by 50-year-old Pan Sutong, a successful Hong Kong who spent some time in the United States in his teens and now heads up the Goldin Group, a holding company for a variety of companies he now owns. This past September, Sutong=s Goldin Pty Ltd. announced the acquisition of Lindsay Park Stud in South Australia, the home of former Hong Kong trainer David Hayes. Sutong gave a reported HK$20 million (US$2,579,067) for Akeed Mofeed--he also simultaneously acquired G1 Hong Kong Mile runner-up Gold-Fun (Ire)--and turned the duo over to Richard Gibson, who was in his infancy in the local training ranks, but who sent out Doctor Dino (Fr) (Muhtathir) to win the G1 Hong Kong Vase in 2007 and 2008. It was terrific to see two Americans here, and hopefully we=ll see many more in the future. The sporting aspect of it aside, there figure to be intriguing business opportunities in Asia in the coming decade, and it makes sense for American breeders to better familiarize themselves with the market in this corner of the world. As for Sha Tin, it=s an interesting place, falling improbably between Aqueduct in January and Downs on the first Saturday in May. The crowd is different from Happy Valley. The Hong Kong Jockey Club=s Bill Nader told me as much earlier in the week, explaining that the Happy Valley crowd, in downtown Hong Kong Island, was more in search of entertainment (sort of like the crowds at the Derby), while the Sha Tin crowd was there to bet. You could see that immediately. The vast majority of the crowd yesterday at Sha Tin wore jeans or old khakis, smoked cigarettes, studied their forms, didn=t talk and didn=t seem overly emotional about the home team=s The Suit incredible success. There was no ATiznow wins it for America@ sort of feeling, for sure. Part of me digs that, though. When I=m betting, I don=t want to be social. I don=t want to flirt with girls, or see or be seen, or do much other than study my Form and not talk. It was actually pretty amazing how quiet 70,000 people could be. The Tailor Several times yesterday, I was struck by the lack of noise. It wasn=t like that all the time, of course, but there=s never a point at the Kentucky Derby where you think, Ah, it=s kinda peaceful right now. There was plenty of fashion and style yesterday, too, don=t get me wrong, especially in the clubhouse area. Now, the news that a good three of you have been waiting to hear: the suit (I got lured into buying a handmade suit this past week while staying in Tsim Sha Tsui), arrived Saturday night at my hotel. Sem the Tailor (not to be confused with the Tailor, who I understand to be Hong Kong=s most recognizable suitmaker) had me a tad worried when I showed up earlier in the day and my suit wasn=t in the shop. Sem (who incidentally does not refer to himself as Sem the Tailor) assured me he=d have it delivered to my hotel, and when I returned from my walkabout in Central that night, there it was in my hotel closet. (Assuming-- hoping--the hotel staff put it there, and that Sem doesn=t have a key to my hotel room...) Anyway, it fits. It looks good, I think. Who knows?
