Erdem Ph.D., Department of History Supervisor: Asst. Prof. Dr. Oktay Özel May 2018 This dissertation focuses on the intellectual and historical work of a historian who played a crucial role in the emergence and institutionalization of history as an academic discipline in Turkey: Mehmed Fuad Köprülü (1890 -1966). Situating his scholarly work and activity within its historico-political context, this study thus aims to pres ent an extensive and historicizing analysis of Köprülü’s historiography and his substantial contribution to the professionalization of Ottoman-Turkish historical writing. It, moreover, treats Köprülü as one of the most important agents of the Turkish nation-building process in the late Ottoman and early republican era, and reveals how his programmatic historiographical production contributed greatly to the nationalist project by providing it with a scholarly valid historical master narrative regarding Turkish history and national past. Keywords: Historiography, Mehmed Fuad Köprülü, Nation-Building, Ottoman/Turkish Historiography, Turkish Nationalism. iii ÖZET MEHMED FUAD KÖPRÜLÜ VE TÜRKİYE’DE MODERN TARİHÇİLİĞİN DOĞUŞU Sönmez, S. Even a brief look at his scholarly life and work corroborates this consideration and demonstrates that he indeed played a pivotal role in the emergence and institutionalization of history as an academic discipline in Turkey. During his approximately thirty- year career as a professional historian, Köprülü spearheaded the establishment of major historical associations, published and managed many academic history journals, held the deanship of the Faculty of Literature at Istanbul University for one and a half decade, and, thus, contributed greatly to the construction of an appropriate institutional structure for scholarly historiographical practice in the country. Moreover, he also made a genuine effort to introduce and consolidate the contemporary methodological principles of European historiography 1 ‘The p ractice of history is entirely relative to the structure of society’. Michel de Certeau, ‘L’opération Historiographique ,’ in L’Écriture de l’histoire (2 nd ed.), (Paris: Gallimard, 1993), 75 –76. 1 in Ottoman/Turkish historical writing. He, in other words, strove to establish the disciplinary standards of modern historical scholarship as the norms of Turkish historiography by publishing numerous articles on methodology, reviewing almost all newly issued works of Turkish historians and Western orientalists, pointing out the methodological problems of these studies, and harshly criticizing traditional forms of history writing. Additionally, he trained many young historians, supervised the first doctoral dissertations written in the field of history in Turkey, and left a deep imprint on the subsequent development of Turkish historiography. Finally, and perhaps most importantly, he constructed the first —and at least for a long time the unique —scholarly valid historical master narrative regarding w hat he called ‘Turkish national history’. Empire, Nation, and the Islamic World: Bosnian Muslim Reformists between the Habsburg and Ottoman Empires, 1901-1914 Harun Buljina Submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2019 © 2019 Harun Buljina All rights reserved ABSTRACT Empire, Nation, and the Islamic World: Bosnian Muslim Reformists between the Habsburg and Ottoman Empires, 1901-1914 Harun Buljina This dissertation is a study of the early 20th-century Pan-Islamist reform movement in Bosnia-Herzegovina, tracing its origins and trans-imperial development with a focus on the years 1901-1914. Its central figure is the theologian and print entrepreneur Mehmed Džemaludin Čaušević (1870-1938), who returned to his Austro-Hungarian-occupied home province from extended studies in the Ottoman lands at the start of this period with an ambitious agenda of communal reform. Čaušević’s project centered on tying his native land and its Muslim inhabitants to the wider “Islamic World”—a novel geo-cultural construct he portrayed as a viable model for communal modernization. Over the subsequent decade, he and his followers founded a printing press, standardized the writing of Bosnian in a modified Arabic script, organized the country’s Ulema, and linked these initiatives together in a string of successful Arabic-script, Ulema-led, and theologically modernist print publications. By 1914, Čaušević’s supporters even brought him to a position of institutional power as Bosnia-Herzegovina’s Reis-ul-Ulema (A: raʾīs al-ʿulamāʾ), the country’s highest Islamic religious authority and a figure of regional influence between two empires.

This work appears as the second collection of translations from the west approximately thirty years after Ibrahim Şinasi’s Terceme-i Manzume (Translation of Verse), which was the first collection of Turkish translations of Western poetry in 1859. This paper does not only bring to the fore an Ottoman work that remained in the margin, introducing it to scholarly circles with a special focus on the paratextual data. It also intends to draw attention to translation history in the Turkish context, as a powerful way to recover the hidden or erased past of translation, especially when looked at from the perspective of forgetting and remembering in the course of the Turkish transition from empire to nation-state. Prof. Dr. Bülent Bilmez, Department of History, Bilgi University, Istanbul, Turkey The closure of the central Bektashi dergah in Turkey (1925) and its consequences. This paper will start with the description of the place and meaning of the main/central tekke in Bektashism and proceed with the history of the last years of the central Bektasi tekke in Haci Bektas in Turkey by focusing on the fact that the majority of the dervishes in recent years in the main tekke were Albanian. I will then to try to explore the legal process of the closure of this tekke and its immediate social, religious and political consequences for Bektashis in general. The main point of discussion will be the longer term consequences of this closure: First, I will discuss the rather paradoxically positive attitude of the Bektashis of Turkey towards Kemalism in spite of this act of closure. Secondly I will examine the consequences of this act for the Bektashis in Albania, who have directly been effected by this closure as the last leader of the Bektashis before the closure ended up in Tirana afterwards to launch a new centre there. The consequences of this shift, on the other hand, still continue to affect the world Bektashism today.
