Tijdens deze driedaagse conferentie van de Vereniging Interuniversitair Overleg Taalbeheersing stond het thema Duurzame Taalbeheersing centraal. Duurzaamheid vormde vanuit verschillende invalshoeken de rode, of lie- ver groene draad tijdens deze VIOT-conferentie. In 85 lezingen en negen symposia werd de aandacht gevestigd op de vraag wat in theorievorming, onderzoek en toepassingen op het terrein van de Taalbeheersing en de Communicatiekunde van blijvende waarde is. Ook kwamen methodolo- gische kwesties aan de orde rond herhaalbaarheid van onderzoek en ro- buustheid van uitkomsten. De organisatiecommissie (Jacqueline van Kruiningen (voorzitter), Kees de Glopper, John Hoeks en Carel Jansen) dankt de collega’s die betrokken waren bij de organisatie van de conferentie voor hun inzet. Van de Groningse afdeling CIW Groningen waren dat Aline Douma, Noortje Hemmen, Annemiek Nijp en Aniek Straatman, en van het Groningen Congres Bureau Mariska Pater en Sharon de Puijsselaar. Dank gaat ook uit naar de sponsoren van de conferentie: het Groninger Universiteitsfonds, het Centre for Language and Cognition Groningen, de Taalunie en het bestuur van de VIOT. In deze bundel zijn twee van de vier keynote-bijdragen opgenomen. Catherine Snow (Harvard Graduate School of Education) vestigt in haar bijdrage Blijvende impact de aandacht op duurzaamheid en relevantie in onderwijsonderzoek. Hans Hoeken (Universiteit Utrecht) presenteert in zijn bijdrage Wat leert onderzoek naar overtuigende teksten over het ontwer- pen van overtuigender teksten? een overzicht van meta-analytische studies over dit thema. Daarnaast bevat deze bundel twintig bijdragen van lezing- houders uit de parelelle sessies. Dank verdienen de 28 reviewers die de bijdragen van constructief com- mentaar hebben voorzien. Hun namen staan hieronder. Natuurlijk gaat de dank vooral uit naar de auteurs die hun lezing hebben bewerkt tot een bijdrage aan deze VIOT-bundel. Net als de vorige VIOT-bundels biedt ook VIOT 2018: DUURZAME TAALBEHEERSING 9 JANSEN deze bundel daarmee een gevarieerd overzicht van de thema’s en onder- zoeksmethoden in actueel taalbeheersingsonderzoek – dit keer met bij- dragen uit niet alleen België en Nederland, maar ook uit Zuid-Afrika en de Verenigde Staten. Their gestures can be divided into iconic, me- taphoric, deictic and beat gestures (McNeill, 1992). Beats (repetitive, short movements) are frowned upon by some presentation skills advisers. Earlier research that focused on short speeches, mostly about concrete topological content, found that gestures help the listener to understand and remem- ber the content. Presentation skills courses, however, focus on longer, more abstract informative speeches. To explore how gestures influence both re- tention and assessment of the speaker in such longer speeches, an experi- ment was conducted. Participants (N = 229) were asked to watch a fifteen minute informative presentation accompanied by PowerPoint slides, either (i) without gestures, (ii) with only beat gestures, or (iii) with a mix of iconic, metaphoric, deictic, and beat gestures. Participants were tested on retention and on their assessment of speaker qualities. An ANOVA showed a significant effect for retention. When a speaker accompanied his speech with only beat gestures, this resulted in higher scores than when this speaker remained in a static position. Also, when the speaker used only beat gestures, he was seen as more ‘natural’ than when he remained in a static position. These results do not imply causality. They may, however, temper advisers’ warnings against using beat gestures in presentations.     Nieminen and Mustonen Evolution: Education and Outreach 2014, 7:11 http://www.evolution-outreach.com/content/7/1/11 RESEARCH ARTICLE Open Access Argumentation and fallacies in creationist writings against evolutionary theory Petteri Nieminen1,2* and Anne-Mari Mustonen1 Abstract Background: The creationist–evolutionist conflict is perhaps the most significant example of a debate about a well-supported scientific theory not readily accepted by the public. Methods: We analyzed creationist texts according to type (young earth creationism, old earth creationism or intelligent design) and context (with or without discussion of “scientific” data). Results: The analysis revealed numerous fallacies including the direct ad hominem—portraying evolutionists as racists, unreliable or gullible—and the indirect ad hominem, where evolutionists are accused of breaking the rules of debate that they themselves have dictated. Poisoning the well fallacy stated that evolutionists would not consider supernatural explanations in any situation due to their pre-existing refusal of theism. Appeals to consequences and guilt by association linked evolutionary theory to atrocities, and slippery slopes to abortion, euthanasia and genocide. False dilemmas, hasty generalizations and straw man fallacies were also common. The prevalence of these fallacies was equal in young earth creationism and intelligent design/old earth creationism. The direct and indirect ad hominem were also prevalent in pro-evolutionary texts. Conclusions: While the fallacious arguments are irrelevant when discussing evolutionary theory from the scientific point of view, they can be effective for the reception of creationist claims, especially if the audience has biases. Thus, the recognition of these fallacies and their dismissal as irrelevant should be accompanied by attempts to avoid counter-fallacies and by the recognition of the context, in which the fallacies are presented.

Hall, Stetson University Chapter 4 – Identifying Fallacies 4.1 Introduction Ludwig Wittgenstein once said that his aim in philosophy was to turn disguised nonsense into patent nonsense. What he was implying in this cryptic remark is that patent (obvious) nonsense, being easy to spot, is not as dangerously misleading as nonsense that is disguised as sense. Our task in this chapter is to unmask some common cases of disguised nonsense. When we do, we will be less prone to fall for their illusion of sense. At one time or another, we have all had the illusion that some conclusion followed from a given set of premises when in fact it did not. We might have even acted on such an illusion. Logicians call such deceptive arguments, however psychologically convincing they may be, logical fallacies. Some of these fallacies occur so often and are so psychologically convincing that we need to be on special alert to avoid them. The best way to do this is to identify (by name) examples of them, and to see exactly why the conclusions of such fallacious arguments do not follow from their premises. (There are a couple of exceptions to this rule. As we will discuss presently, the fallacy of complex question may not be formally invalid, but it is always invites bad reasoning. The other exception is the fallacy of begging the question, which is technically both valid and sound, but nevertheless a case of bad reasoning. I will say more about these exceptions in due course.) McCloskey* Economics and law have contrasting rhetorics, which is one reason perhaps why economics has become influential in law. It is a new way of arguing, and lawyers are on the watch for new ways of arguing. These "rhetorics" are not always bad. "Rhetoric" here is not merely ornament and trickery, but all persuasion, from arithmetic to moral character. We humans must decide what arguments we find persuasive. The lawyer's appeal to stare decisis or the economist's claim to scientific status are rhetorical acts, good or bad. I want to argue that economics is a sweet science, but the rhetoric of science in economics is mainly bad, not least because it makes lawyers feel like unscientific imbeciles. Economics, like mathematics, thinks it uses no rhetoric but logic.
