  • Living Without Google on Android
Alternative for Google Apps on Android - living without Google on Android Android without any Google App? What to use instead of Hangouts, Map, Gmail? Is that even possible? And why would anyone want to live without Google? I've been using a lot of different custom ROMs on my devices, so far the two best: plain Cyanogenmod 11 snapshot on the Nexus 4[^1], and MIUI 2.3.2 on the HTC Desire G7[^2]. All the others ( MUIU 5, MIUI 6 unofficial, AOKP, Kaos, Slim, etc ) were either ugly, unusable, too strange or exceptionally problematic on battery life. For a long time, the first step for me was to install the Google Apps, gapps packages for Plays Store, Maps, and so on, but lately they require so much rights on the phone that I started to have a bad taste about them. Then I started to look for alternatives. 1 of 5 So, what to replace with what? Play Store I've been using F-Droid[^3] as my primary app store for a while now, but since it's strictly Free Software[^4] store only, sometimes there's just no app present for your needs; aptoide[^5] comes very handy in that cases. Hangouts I never liked Hangouts since the move from Gtalk although for a little while it was exceptional for video - I guess it ended when the mass started to use it in replacement of Skype and its recent suckyness. For chat only, check out: ChatSecure[^6], Conversations[^7] or Xabber[^8]. All of them is good for Gtalk-like, oldschool client and though Facebook can be configured as XMPP as well, I'd recommend Xabber for that, the other two is a bit flaky with Facebook.

  • Digital Essay Script Writing Guide (Podcasts, Documentary, TED Talks, RSA Videos)
Digital Essay Script Writing Guide (Podcasts, Documentary, TED Talks, RSA Videos) General Guidelines ● Use a script to sound more focused, produced, and polished and to ensure that information is clear, concise, and in order. A script helps you retain full control of the content. ● A script should be invisible. When delivered, it shouldn’t sound like a script. If it sounds like a script, your program won’t sound spontaneous and won’t sound friendly to your audience. ● The invisibility of your script depends on how it’s written and how it’s presented. ● Conversational writing needs to sound natural, not stilted and artificial. The best way to see if your copy sounds natural is to read it out loud. Do you have to stop for a breath in the middle of a sentence? The sentence is too long. Do you repeatedly stumble in your reading when you get to a certain point in your script? The idea or wording isn’t clear. ● For podcasts, write for the ear, not the eye. Text written for the eye can be more complex and still not lose the meaning because readers linger over the text until they figure out your meaning. Scripts written for the ear go by literally at the speed of sound. They have to be much simpler. ● Write clearly. Listeners only hear it once, unless they replay it. You can’t count on them to do that, so your meaning has to be clear the first time your listeners hear it. ● Interview-style podcast – script the introduction and closing and outline the questions.

  • Security System for Mobile Messaging Applications Pejman Dashtinejad
Security System for Mobile Messaging Applications Pejman Dashtinejad Master of Science Thesis Stockholm, Sweden TRITA–ICT–EX-2015:2 Introduction | 1 Security System for Mobile Messaging Applications Pejman Dashtinejad 8 January 2015 Master of Science Thesis Examiner Professor Sead Muftic Department of ICT KTH University SE-100 44 Stockholm, Sweden TRITA–ICT–EX-2015:2 Abstract | iii Abstract Instant messaging (IM) applications are one of the most popular applications for smartphones. The IMs have the capability of sending messages or initiating voice calls via Internet which makes it almost cost free for the users to communicate with each other. Unfortunately, like any other type of applications, majority of these applications are vulnerable to malicious attacks and have privacy issues. The motivation for this thesis is the need to identifying security services of an IM application and to design a secure system for any mobile messaging application. This research proposes an E2EE (End-to-End Encryption) approach which provides a secure IM application design which protects its users with better integrity, confidentiality and privacy. To achieve this goal a research is conducted to investigate current security features of popular messaging applications in the mobile market. A list of requirements for good security is generated and based on those requirements an architecture is designed. A demo is also implemented and evaluated. Keywords: Mobile, Application, messaging, Chat, Encryption, Security Acknowledgments | v Acknowledgments First and foremost, thank you God to give me another chance to complete my higher education and to learn enormous skills and knowledge through all these years of study at the university.

  • ART Vs. NDK Vs. GPU Acceleration: a Study of Performance of Image Processing Algorithms on Android
DEGREE PROJECT IN COMPUTER SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING, SECOND CYCLE, 30 CREDITS STOCKHOLM, SWEDEN 2017 ART vs. NDK vs. GPU acceleration: A study of performance of image processing algorithms on Android ANDREAS PÅLSSON KTH ROYAL INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY SCHOOL OF COMPUTER SCIENCE AND COMMUNICATION ART vs. NDK vs. GPU acceleration: A study of performance of image processing algorithms on Android ANDREAS PÅLSSON Master in Computer Science Date: June 26, 2017 Supervisor: Cyrille Artho Examiner: Johan Håstad Swedish title: ART, NDK eller GPU acceleration: En prestandastudie av bildbehandlingsalgoritmer på Android School of Computer Science and Communication iii Abstract The Android ecosystem contains three major platforms for execution suit- able for different purposes. Android applications are normally written in the Java programming language, but computationally intensive parts of An- droid applications can be sped up by choosing to use a native language or by utilising the parallel architecture found in graphics processing units (GPUs). The experiments conducted in this thesis measure the performance benefits by switching from Java to C++ or RenderScript, Google’s GPU acceleration framework. The experiments consist of often-done tasks in image processing. For some of these tasks, optimized libraries and implementations already exist. The performance of the implementations provided by third parties are compared to our own. Our results show that for advanced image processing on large images, the benefits are large enough to warrant C++ or RenderScript usage instead of Java in modern smartphones. However, if the image processing is conducted on very small images (e.g. thumbnails) or the image processing task contains few calculations, moving to a native language or RenderScript is not worth the added development time and static complexity.
