Domaine Moulin-la-Viguerie

Tavel

Owner/Winemaker: Gaël Petit

Estate History The Petit-Roudil family has been producing Tavel since the 16th century when the monks were making the local wines. The most important name in this domaine’s history is that of Mireiles’s great grandfather, Aimé Roudil (1870-1938), who formally established the estate in the years following the phyloxerra crisis. Aimé was president of the Tavel’s Syndicate of Winemaker’s as well as the Vice-President of the General Syndicate of Cotes du Rhone and was responsible for setting the initial borders for the Tavel AOC in the 1920s. Today Gael Petit and his wife Mireille Roudil continue Aimé’s work with through the production of their great Tavel wines.

Area: 15 hectares (34 acres) all in Tavel

Blend: 50% Noir 30% Cinsault 10% 10% Mourvedre, , Clairette

In the vines Domaine Moulin-la-Viguerie is spread out over the four major soil types of Tavel: chalky-clay, sandy-loam, sandy, and limestone. This diversity of terroirs makes Gaël work extremely hard to keep up with the varying care each soil type requires. All work, including harvest, is performed by hand.

In the cellar Destemming according to vintage. Short, low-temp maceration in steel tank followed by fermentation of 10-12 days. Large majority of the is from the pressoir. After vinification the wine will spend approximately 6 months in steel and cement tanks before final blending, filtering and bottling.

Extra Credit With a Masters degree in Political Science and a diploma from the Université du Vin in Suze la Rousse you might think taking over the family estate would not appeal to Gaël. However, he will tell you that owning these distinctions only makes him more curious to uncover as much knowledge as possible about every aspect of his parcels, his methods of working the vines, vinification, etc. so that he can improve upon each vintage from what he has learned.
