    Chinese Television between Propaganda and Entertainment: Socialist Traditions, Marketisation and Popular TV Dramas, 1992-2017 by Yingzi WANG School of Social Sciences and Humanities A Doctoral Thesis Submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the award of Doctor of Philosophy of Loughborough University March 2019 © Yingzi WANG (2019) Abstract The ‘reform and opening’ policy initiated since 1978 has profoundly changed the operation and function of Chinese television. Following the accelerated market reforms from 1992, the production of Chinese TV programmes has become increasingly driven by ratings and oriented towards popular entertainment. Within this context, this project aims to examine how Chinese television has evolved over recent decades in response to wider political, economic and cultural changes in China, with a focus on prime-time television dramas broadcast between 1992 and 2017. It situates the analysis of TV dramas within the spectrum of two poles – propaganda and entertainment, aiming to explore how these TV programmes have continued to serve the propaganda imperatives of the Party-state, while at the same time responding to audience demands regarding entertainment. In order to map the changes and continuities exemplified by Chinese TV dramas, this project has adopted a mixed-method approach. This approach includes a systematic quantitative analysis to delineate long-term trends, and four qualitative case studies to establish a more thorough understanding of the detailed transformation in Chinese television. The thesis demonstrates that while Chinese television has become increasingly driven by commercial values that prioritise audience interests and popular elements, television entertainment in China still needs to align with official ideological lines.

    Hong Kong 1995 By Limin Teh and Toh Hai Leong Fall 1995 Issue of KINEMA SINCE 1985 THE HONG KONG INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL (HKIFF) has been the guardian of Asian cinema. Apart from screening an eclectic range of Asian and international films, it regularly runs comprehensive retrospectives which highlight both prominent and little-known Asian directors in events such as the thematic ”Hong Kong Cinema Retrospective.” In celebrating the Centenary of Cinema this year, the 19th HKIFF focused its attention on archival motion pictures collectively titled ”Early Images of Hong Kong and China.” An exhibition of the same theme was held concurrently at the City Hall. Among the most striking of the nearly 126 films from 44 countries exhibited in the Colony’s bustling art cinemas were engaging movies that featured peculiar familial clans, haunted loners and bizarre relationships. The intensive 16-day affair (7th to 22nd April) opened with Jiang Wen’s rites-of-passage film, In the Heat of the Sun. In his introductory speech, the acclaimed Mainland Chinese actor-turned-director (he was the leading actor in Red Sorghum) proclaimed his loyalty to his ”new-found mistress, the cinema, which he cannot afford to abandon now that he has turned filmmaker” with self-detractory charm. It was ashockto discover that his debut had been banned in both his homeland and in Taiwan. Brilliantly directed, Jiang’s bold tracking camera and nostalgic voice-over create cinematic magic as he fondly recollects the wild days of his Beijing youth during the Cultural Revolution. The film certainly is far from the dictates of a ”socialist film” in its refreshing story of five miscreants who spend their days playing pranks, gangland fighting, skirt-chasing and mayhem-making.

It deals with three different life stages: childhood, teenage years, and midlife, analyzing some complicated connections between the individual’s daily life and Maoist/Post-Maoist historical discourse. Although much effort by scholars has been put into examining In the Heat of the Sun in isolation, barely any attention has been devoted to the films Little Red Flowers and Papa, and there is no discussion among scholars of these three films in conjunction with one another. This thesis contains a chapter each on Little Red Flowers, In the Heat of the Sun, and Papa, revisiting the particular status of the individual’s life trajectory under different historical circumstances from the 1960s to the 1990s in China, and arguing that there are resonances among these three films. Chapter One gives special attention to the disciplining of young children’s bodies in kindergarten during the 1960s and how the filmmaker in Little Red Flowers disdains the attempt to utilize children’s body for propagandistic display.

    Life-long Love A retrospective usually means 'an intensive screening activity commemorating a topic, a person or a period of time, recounting the development and summing up the achievement of such.' But our retrospective for a filmmaker at her prime gives new definition to the word. As she says, 'The retrospective is just a beginning!' On the day of the 'Sylvia Chang's Shining Days' seminar, the waiting audience filled up the stairways and beyond. They say, 'Your films strike a chord in my heart.' In the end, she appeals for consideration of others' efforts, appreciation of others' achievements and leading a happy life. That's why her works are always optimistic and her love for the cinema is just as passionate. The Film Archive will also present some historic works of Li Lihua made in the fifties. Li Lihua, undisputedly one of the divas of Chinese cinema, enjoyed a long popularity, striding from the 40s to the 70s. Sylvia Chang's cinema career is equally impressive. From her first foray into cinema in the 70s, she has been working in front and behind the camera for three decades. But this thirty years' work makes up not her life achievement but the starting of her career that is still going strong. Li Lihua was the screen goddess of her time. Though she did set up her own film company, she never went behind the camera. Screen goddess of today means career woman like Sylvia Chang who is full of passion and creativity for self-expression. Her story, with her trials, transformation, and growth, is material for a classic film.
