Chinese Television Between Propaganda and Entertainment Chinese Television between Propaganda and Entertainment: Socialist Traditions, Marketisation and Popular TV Dramas, 1992-2017 by Yingzi WANG School of Social Sciences and Humanities A Doctoral Thesis Submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the award of Doctor of Philosophy of Loughborough University March 2019 © Yingzi WANG (2019) Abstract The ‘reform and opening’ policy initiated since 1978 has profoundly changed the operation and function of Chinese television. Following the accelerated market reforms from 1992, the production of Chinese TV programmes has become increasingly driven by ratings and oriented towards popular entertainment. Within this context, this project aims to examine how Chinese television has evolved over recent decades in response to wider political, economic and cultural changes in China, with a focus on prime-time television dramas broadcast between 1992 and 2017. It situates the analysis of TV dramas within the spectrum of two poles – propaganda and entertainment, aiming to explore how these TV programmes have continued to serve the propaganda imperatives of the Party-state, while at the same time responding to audience demands regarding entertainment. In order to map the changes and continuities exemplified by Chinese TV dramas, this project has adopted a mixed-method approach. This approach includes a systematic quantitative analysis to delineate long-term trends, and four qualitative case studies to establish a more thorough understanding of the detailed transformation in Chinese television. The thesis demonstrates that while Chinese television has become increasingly driven by commercial values that prioritise audience interests and popular elements, television entertainment in China still needs to align with official ideological lines. In the meantime, varying degrees of political supervision have been identified from different levels of TV stations, and the Party- state has actively engaged in promoting its own agenda through Chinese television entertainment. These have shown an increasingly complex picture of socialist television in the new era. In these ways, this project sheds light on the interplay between political propaganda and commercial trends within the Chinese television system over the past two decades and a half. It is intended to contribute to existing studies on the relationship between propaganda and popular entertainment, and to the analyses of propaganda in television drama. It would also facilitate a systematic understanding of socialist television contexts, bridging the east-west divide on the perceptions of contemporary socialist television culture. i Acknowledgments I am indebted to many people who helped and supported me in my PhD journey. Xu Associate Professor Rania Huntington, University of Wisconsin at Madison Abstract From a comparative standpoint, the American Protestant missionary enterprise in China was built on a paradox in cross-cultural encounters. In order to convert the Chinese—whose religion they rejected—American missionaries adopted strategies of assimilation (e.g. learning Chinese and associating with the Chinese) to facilitate their work. My dissertation explores how American Protestant missionaries negotiated the rejection-assimilation paradox involved in their missionary work and forged a cultural identification with China in their English novels set in China between the late Qing and 1930. I argue that the missionaries’ novelistic expression of that identification was influenced by many factors: their targeted audience, their motives, their work, and their perceptions of the missionary enterprise, cultural difference, and their own missionary identity. Hence, missionary novels may not necessarily be about conversion, the missionaries’ primary objective but one that suggests their resistance to Chinese culture, or at least its religion. Instead, the missionary novels I study culminate in a non-conversion theme that problematizes the possibility of cultural assimilation and identification over ineradicable racial and cultural differences.

Abstract In the introductory chapter we present the moral and intellectual justifications for a book dedicated to the cultural politics of love and intimacy in contemporary China. We outline the background, scope and distinct approach we are taking. We also provide an historical overview of the ways in which narratives of love have evolved in Chinese culture, as well as an overview of some of the most popular discourses in contemporary cultural expressions.     TV © 2016 Beyond Summits 2 Summary: • TV media market has tended to be saturated with almost 99% coverage rate in 10 years. However, Chinese are losing their interests in watching TV. The average age of real TV audience is getting older. The biggest proportion of TV audience is constituted by audience aged over 45 years old. The older TV audience are more likely to be heavy TV users. • In terms of TV programs, Chinese TV content is mainly produced by CCTV and provincial satellite TVs. However, TV production and broadcasting will further separate in the future, and high-quality content will be incline to broadcast through Internet platforms. Eventually, the number of TV audience will decrease. More people will choose to watch videos online instead of on TV. • Since 2014, the advertising on TV has seen a dropping trend. In the first half of 2015, TV ads even showed a negative increase. With the rapid development of variety shows and IP TV dramas, a rising trend of title sponsorship and ads were seen in 2015. • What users watch on TV is quite similar with what they watch online.

    ©2009 Ju-chen Chen ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION CAPITAL DREAMS: GLOBAL CONSUMPTION, URBAN IMAGINATION, AND LABOR MIGRATION IN LATE SOCIALIST BEIJING By JU-CHEN CHEN Dissertation Director: Louisa Schein This dissertation addresses the remaking of Beijing, with a focus on social differentiations within and beyond the city, under the impacts of the late socialist Chinese state and the expansion of global capitalism in the early 2000s. It is argued that the early 2000s witnessed China transforming from being external-referencing to self-referencing. This research simultaneously investigated the city in global, national and local contexts. Multi-site ethnographic research was performed and a design of multiple informant groups was employed. This dissertation focused on Beijing, but included perspectives external to Beijing. Beijing was the main field site, but extensive ethnographic fieldwork was also conducted in Xi’an, together with several shorter research trips to various locations. Shifting perspectives within and outside of Beijing offered insights into how the physical place of Beijing is variously imagined and created. New social groups are emerging in Beijing during the Economic Reform era, and Beijing is a different place for every distinct group of inhabitants, meaning conclusions about Beijing depend on “whose Beijing” one is addressing. This dissertation focuses on three economically-differentiated ii informant groups in the emergent social hierarchy of Beijing: a new privileged elite of business professionals, a poor working class of native Beijingers, and a new marginalized underclass of migrant laborers. The dynamics among these groups are examined through their consumption practices and use of mass media because these two domains of daily practice are crucial for identity negotiation in late socialist China.
