LAW Bun 羅斌(1923.4.27–2012.5.21) Producer
LAW Bun 羅斌(1923.4.27–2012.5.21) Producer Born Luo Jin-pei in Macao and grew up in Shanghai, Law was a native of Kaiping, Guangdong. After graduating from The Lester School and Henry Lester Institute of Technical Education, he moved south to Hong Kong and attended engineering classes at the Far East Flying Training School. Law returned to Shanghai during the Japanese occupation. There he founded the Universal Publisher with friends and published the Blue Books and other magazines. He resettled in Hong Kong in the late 1940s and continued to operate Universal Publisher. And the business continued to grow, publishing Boxing Magazine, Universal Literature and Art, Universal Screen and others. In October of 1959, Law launched the Hong Kong Daily News. In 1961, Law and Miu Hong-nee formed Hong Kong Film Company. Their first production was an adaptation of the wuxia novel The Secret Book, published by Universal. They produced a total of five episodes with outstanding results. Most films produced by the company were adaptations of popular novels or serials published by Law. All were produced by his wife Ho Lai-lai, and occasionally co-produced by him. The couple came to be known as trailblazers for a new wave of wuxia films: four episodes of The Azure Blood and the Golden Pin (1963-64) and The Mighty Snow Sword (1964), three episodes of The Ghost with Six Fingers (1965), and two episodes of Paragon of Sword and Knife (1967-68), etc. Amongst them, The Green-Eyed Lady (1967) was critically praised for crafting a new image of the rebellious heroine, while successfully integrating elements of action and romance and creating a spectacular atmosphere. -

Despite the break from Maoism following the fall of the Gang of Four and Deng Xiaoping’s movement towards capitalist modernization, the brutal events of Tiananmen Square caused great concern for a territory facing many changes in the near future. Even before these disturbing events Hong Kong’s imminent return to a motherland with a different dialect and social customs evoked insecurity on the part of a population still remembering the violent events of the Cultural Revolution as well as the Maoist- inspired riots that affected the colony in 1967. -

Fighting and dancing games both emerge from Asia, and they both foreground the body. They strip down bodily movement into elemental actions like stepping, kicking, leaping, and tapping, and make these the form and content of the game. I argue that fighting and dancing games point to a key dynamic in videogame play: the programming of the body into the algorithmic logic of the game, a logic that increasingly organizes the informatic structure of everyday work and leisure in a globally interconnected information economy. -

Humanity 2012 Papers. ~~~~~~ “‘We are all the same, we are all unique’: The paradox of using individual celebrity as metaphor for national (transnational) identity.” Joyleen Christensen University of Newcastle Introduction: This paper will examine the apparently contradictory public persona of a major star in the Hong Kong entertainment industry - an individual who essentially redefined the parameters of an industry, which is, itself, a paradox. In the last decades of the 20th Century, the Hong Kong entertainment industry's attempts to translate American popular culture for a local audience led to an exciting fusion of cultures as the system that was once mocked by English- language media commentators for being equally derivative and ‘alien’, through translation and transmutation, acquired a unique and distinctively local flavour. My use of the now somewhat out-dated notion of East versus West sensibilities will be deliberate as it reflects the tone of contemporary academic and popular scholarly analysis, which perfectly seemed to capture the essence of public sentiment about the territory in the pre-Handover period. It was an explicit dichotomy, with commentators frequently exploiting the notion of a culture at war with its own conception of a national identity. However, the dwindling Western interest in Hong Kong’s fate after 1997 and the social, economic and political opportunities afforded by the reunification with Mainland China meant that the new millennia saw Hong Kong's so- called ‘Culture of Disappearance’ suddenly reconnecting with its true, original self. Humanity 2012 11 Alongside this shift I will track the career trajectory of Andy Lau – one of the industry's leading stars1 who successfully mimicked the territory's movement in focus from Western to local and then regional. -
Miff Announces Record Slate of Premiere Fund Films for 2019 Festival
1 / 2 MIFF ANNOUNCES RECORD SLATE OF PREMIERE FUND FILMS FOR 2019 FESTIVAL Media Release Tuesday 18 June — Media Contact Luke McKinnon E [email protected] M (+61) 408 640 329 Tiki Menegola E [email protected] M (+61) 467 227 822 MIFF 2019 Media Centre The MIFF Premiere Fund delivers seven world and Australian premieres to the 68th Melbourne International Film Festival (MIFF), including Paul Ireland’s gritty reimagining of Shakespeare’s Measure for Measure staring Hugo Weaving and Maziar Lahooti’s highly anticipated directorial debut, Below. The Premiere Fund, which provides minority co-financing to new Australian quality theatrical (narrative and documentary) feature films that then premiere at MIFF, has invested in more than 70 projects including the MIFF 2019 slate. Four of this year’s suite of Premiere Fund films have also been directed by alumni of the MIFF Accelerator Lab for emerging screen directors, including: John Sheedy, Jayden Stevens, Rodd Rathjen and Maziar Lahooti. Reimagining the Bard’s play about morality, mercy and justice into a topical tale of love and loyalty, Ireland and his co- writer, the late Damian Hill (West of Sunshine, MIFF 2018), have crafted a touching story about a young Muslim woman, Jaiwara, who falls for a non-Muslim musician, Claudio. Ireland’s film takes audiences on an emotional, action-packed ride, with a beautifully-shot Melbourne as the backdrop. As Jaiwara, Megan Hajjar is luminous. Harrison Gilbertson (My Mistress, MIFF Premiere Fund 2014), Fayssal Bazzi (The Merger, MIFF 2018) and Daniel Henshall (Acute Misfortune, MIFF Premiere Fund 2018) join Hugo Weaving in a diverse ensemble that also includes Doris Younane and Mark Leonard Winter in fervently penetrating performance as Angelo. -
