1 / 2 MIFF ANNOUNCES RECORD SLATE OF PREMIERE FUND FILMS FOR 2019 FESTIVAL Media Release Tuesday 18 June — Media Contact Luke McKinnon E [email protected] M (+61) 408 640 329 Tiki Menegola E [email protected] M (+61) 467 227 822 MIFF 2019 Media Centre The MIFF Premiere Fund delivers seven world and Australian premieres to the 68th Melbourne International Film Festival (MIFF), including Paul Ireland’s gritty reimagining of Shakespeare’s Measure for Measure staring Hugo Weaving and Maziar Lahooti’s highly anticipated directorial debut, Below. The Premiere Fund, which provides minority co-financing to new Australian quality theatrical (narrative and documentary) feature films that then premiere at MIFF, has invested in more than 70 projects including the MIFF 2019 slate. Four of this year’s suite of Premiere Fund films have also been directed by alumni of the MIFF Accelerator Lab for emerging screen directors, including: John Sheedy, Jayden Stevens, Rodd Rathjen and Maziar Lahooti. Reimagining the Bard’s play about morality, mercy and justice into a topical tale of love and loyalty, Ireland and his co- writer, the late Damian Hill (West of Sunshine, MIFF 2018), have crafted a touching story about a young Muslim woman, Jaiwara, who falls for a non-Muslim musician, Claudio. Ireland’s film takes audiences on an emotional, action-packed ride, with a beautifully-shot Melbourne as the backdrop. As Jaiwara, Megan Hajjar is luminous. Harrison Gilbertson (My Mistress, MIFF Premiere Fund 2014), Fayssal Bazzi (The Merger, MIFF 2018) and Daniel Henshall (Acute Misfortune, MIFF Premiere Fund 2018) join Hugo Weaving in a diverse ensemble that also includes Doris Younane and Mark Leonard Winter in fervently penetrating performance as Angelo. -

Toulouse School of Graduate Studies Castillo, Gilbert Gerard, Gender, Identity, and Influence: Hong Kong Martial Arts Films. Master of Arts (Radio, Television and Film), December 2002, 78 pp., references, 64 titles. This project is an examination of the Hong Kong film industry, focusing on the years leading up to the handover of Hong Kong to communist China. The influence of classical Chinese culture on gender representation in martial arts films is examined in order to formulate an understanding of how these films use gender issues to negotiate a sense of cultural identity in the face of unprecedented political change. In particular, the films of Hong Kong action stars Michelle Yeoh and Brigitte Lin are studied within a feminist and cultural studies framework for indications of identity formation through the highlighting of gender issues. It's also misaligned and displays black borders on three sides of the screen. The good news is that the chapter hiccups that plagued past DVD's from World are not present. The English dubbed audio is in mono and features bad voice acting. Cantonese and Mandarin audio tracks are included, but there are no subtitles. The menu layout is ugly and poorly executed. Extras include a number of cheaply produced trailers for other World Video releases, basic film info, and filmographies of Yuen Bun, Moon Lee, and Wilson Lam. A mix of quality martial arts and campy jungle warfare dominate this plain actioner starring the talented Moon Lee. -

burst into action The Changing Spectacle of Glamour Heroines in STEPHEN C.K. CHAN Contemporary Hong Kong Cinema As the local people experience the transnational moment amid a seemingly endless circuit of social mediations in Hong Kong, and as that very process allows them to be dynamically involved in re-articulating various identity flows, tensions and negotiations through the col- lective shaping of contemporary culture (not least via a globally mediated form such as cinema), the constituencies of the local change. My question for now is: in what ways have the new currents of transnationality affected existing forms of cultural sensibility in the ‘post- colony’? Realised as a system of representation of the global popular, recent articulations of popular experience tend to be absorbed into generic cross-cultural media representations shared on the glocal level of operation by cultural producers, consumers and practitioners across geographical borders. In this paper, I shall focus on the changing spectacle of ‘the local’ through its cinematic action (along with its alternative heroine mediation), in light of such a transnational articulation as the emerging dominant. My purpose is to examine how local action has been re-imagined and can be re-aligned in relation to the specifically historical, national and postcolonial mode of imagination under the contemporary glocal context of the Hong Kong ‘Special Administrative Region’ (HKSAR), as this particular post-colony is officially renamed. Since the mid-1980s, Hong Kong has been subjected to a rapidly evolving sociohistorical spectacle amid bursting tensions brought about in a period of political and economic crisis. The British colony’s historic return to China in 1997 and the Asian financial market turmoil that followed had been totally overwhelming for Hong Kong, well before the traumatic impact of SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome) in the spring of 2003, an event that compelled STEPHEN C.K.
