The Scientific Programme of the ISI2015 will include a OME MES wealth of activities that will cover stimulating topics and will offer C delegates innovative and well-balanced presentations, as well as plenty of opportunities for discussion and exchange. A rich and exciting Social Programme is also being developed, with plenty to see WEL and enjoy for participants and their accompanying persons, hoping to make your trip to Rio and taking part in ISI2015 a truly unforgettable experience. The venue - Riocentro - is located in Barra da Tijuca, a district surrounded by natural beauty but also by many sophisticated bars, restaurants and several malls and close to a variety of historical and cultural programmes that only the Wonderful City can offer. I am confident that all the ingredients are in place to ensure that the 60th ISI World Statistics Congress will be a memorable statistical event! Dr. Wasmália Bivar 3 WELCOME MESSAGES From the President of the International Statistical Institute I look forward to seeing you at the 60th World Statistics Congress (WSC) in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The WSC is the flagship conference of the ISI and its family of associations. The conference has a rich tradition that goes back to Rome in 1887 and has been hosted by many countries around the world since then. The WSC provides an opportunity to meet and exchange ideas with fellow statisticians from more than one hundred countries, working in all fields of statistical sciences. It is a wonderful platform to meet old friends, make new ones, and develop an international network. The scientific programme will feature presentations and panel discussions by prominent researchers, educators, officials from national and international organisations, and practitioners from industry. They will cover cutting-edge research and state-of-the-art practice, novel applications, and emerging challenges relevant to science and public policy. The programme for the 2015 WSC will also include several sessions that are organized by, and aimed at, Young Statisticians. The ISI WSC is much more than a conference and unlike any others you would have attended. It has a diverse social programme that includes opening and closing ceremonies, a gala dinner, and tours. It provides ample opportunity to experience the culture and tradition of the host country. All of these activities make the WSC a really memorable event. If you are not a member of the ISI or one of its associations, I invite you to visit the ISI website (www.isi-web.org) to get to know our mission and activities. Consider becoming a member so that you can enjoy reduced registration rates for the WSC and all the other benefits of membership. Details on how to become a member are available at the ISI website. Rio de Janeiro (and Brazil) is among the most attractive tourist destinations in the world with a rich culture, wonderful people, beautiful beaches, and great weather. Come to Rio and join us for a truly special experience. Professor Vijay Nair 4 From the Director of the International Statistical Institute Will you join us for the 60th WSC in Rio de Janeiro in July 2015? Rio hosted the ISI World Statistics Congress 60 years ago. It is great to be returning. It will be a good opportunity to take a new picture at the Cristo Redentor or to investigate what happened with the tree 60 years after it was planted by the ISI President Georges Darmois in Teresópolis. But even more interesting you will find the scientific programme for the WSC, offering the latest developments in statistics for statisticians from academia, business and official statistics, stimulating discussion and offering networking opportunities for all. The ISI congresses are well known for the extraordinary combination of an outstanding scientific programme and social events with local flavour. For the ISI and the Associations, this will be a showcase event where not only the scientific programme is exciting but where we will have all the Executive, Council and General Assembly meetings and where the members of our Associations come together to discuss future directions. The numerous ISI Committees and networks, such as the Young Statisticians, the Committee on Women in Statistics, the Committee on Agricultural Statistics and so forth will have their meetings and round tables during the week. Should you plan to come to Rio de Janeiro and are interested in an area of work of the aforementioned groups, feel free to liaise with them or join one of the special events and receptions. The time of the year is perfect for the congress participants and accompanying persons; a pleasant temperature and - according to statistics - very small chance of rain. The Riocentro complex will offer inside and outside programme opportunities. The Local Organising Committee and our host IBGE will make sure that the WSC in the beautiful Rio de Janeiro will be an unforgettable experience. I look forward to meeting you in Rio de Janeiro. The next 15 years saw 68,000 trees planted, with Bra silia another 20,000 during the subsequent 10 years (Rodrigues et al. BOLIVIA 2007). Efforts to reintroduce additional native animal species took place in the 20th century.
