May 11 to May 17, 2013 - The Upper Hunter Entertainer - 3 creative&' arts Countdown to SCADS Opening Show! By Sophie Fitzgerald The curtains will rise early this month as the Scone Community Amateur Dramatic Society (otherwise known as SCADS) prepare for the commencement of its 118th prestigious production which will launch itself during the Scone and Upper Hunter Horse Festival. Simon William’s comedy, ‘Nobody’s Perfect’ will be performed at Scone’s ‘Old Court Theatre’ in Kingdon Street with the cast of five having worked tirelessly under the leadership of director Gillie Hayes in rehearsal and preparation for the show. Gillie had first performed for SCADS in 1962 when Scone’s Courthouse was first converted into the impressive theatre, which has recently been undertaken by the Upper Hunter Shire Council to assist in restoration. The first production saw NBN’s cameras capturing the historical moment as Gillie played the leading role in ‘Bold Lover’, and since then, she has continued to be actively involved as a performer and director. ‘Nobody’s Perfect’ is a delightful comedy about a statistician who wants to become a writer and resorts to subterfuge to have his novel published by a feminist publishing house. Living in the same house as his teenage daughter and ‘out there’ father creates some humorous situations. The local on-stage cast consists of Damien Saunders, Nicole Wild, Liza White, Phil Charley and Michael Cook with a backstage crew of four. The ten performances will consist of one matinee show on 19 May and the remaining performances on the 11, 15, 16, 23, 24, 25, 30, 31 May with the finale being held 1 June. So whether you are a theatre connoisseur or comedy enthusiast, make sure you head to the office of Kate Mailer Solicitor in Liverpool Street, Scone to purchase tickets or call 65451933 for enquiries. It’s a city-standard show without the long drive! Image: At rehearsal from L to R Damien Saunders, Nicole Wild, Liza White and Phil Charley (absent Michael Cook)

May 11 to May 17, 2013 - The Upper Hunter Entertainer - 5 food & wine Winners are Grinners at the 2012 Business Awards By Sophie Fitzgerald The Muswellbrook Chamber of Commerce & Industry held the 2012 Business Awards recently, which was hailed as a wonderful event. It was a night to acknowledge and award the businesses of Muswellbrook and its surrounding areas for their efforts and success throughout the year. Many businesses were awarded on the night for various categories, in particular, the Hospitality & Tourism category - the awards going to the Railway Hotel, Hunter Belle Cheese and Two Rivers Wines. Greg Smith, licensee of the Railway Hotel accepted the small business award on behalf of his team after many years of growth. Numerous upgrades have taken place as the hotel now boasts a fully equipped TAB facility, renovated beer garden including an entertainment stage and fire bucket with rotisserie. There are many plans in place over the next years also. “We were thrilled to win and be recognised for all the hard work our team had put in over the past few years. We had a great night at the awards; the service was great and the way Images: [Top] Alix Smith, Greg Smith (Publican - Railway Hotel), Lucy King [Bottom] the night was run was fantastic. It was nice to be able to sit Geoff Chesworth (Hunter Belle), Linda Keeping (Two Rivers) and Tania Chesworth down and watch people be congratulated on their efforts in (Hunter Belle) our local community”, explained Greg. Two Rivers Wines took out the shared large business award. The business, owned by Brett and Linda Keeping have specialised in making exquisite wines since 1988, now a premier and quite popular choice of winery, especially in the Hunter Valley. The continuously growing company is situated amongst the beautiful scenery of the Denman area and is well worth the visit. Last but not least Hunter Belle Cheese and its proprietors Geoff and Tania Chesworth also took home the large business award. Alongside their range of delectable homemade cheeses and seasonal breakfast and lunch menus, they have also introduced many new features throughout 2012 including ‘Bessie’ the milking cow and her factual dairy mural thanks to funding from Destinations NSW as well as fresh fudge and gelato - all made on site. The Railway Hotel, Hunter Belle Cheese and Two Rivers teams are congratulated on their continued efforts and success over 2012. Along with the other finalists and award winners, it was a fantastic event that highlighted the district’s businesses that continue to please and satisfy not only locals but visitors from far and wide and certainly make a good impression on the town.

10 - The Upper Hunter Entertainer - May 11 to May 17, 2013 leisure & lifestyle Shines During National Heritage Week The Hunter has celebrated two centuries of agricultural history with the listing of Tocal College on the State Heritage Register and the release of a comprehensive study into the region’s pastoral homesteads.

NSW Heritage Minister, Robyn Parker visited Tocal College to mark Heritage Week. Ms Parker said Tocal College and the Hunter Homesteads Project report showed how important agriculture was in the settlement and growth of the Hunter Valley – and remains today. “The 1965 Tocal College complex is a modernist masterpiece and one of Australia’s leading agricultural learning institutions, set in the grounds of one of the country’s oldest pastoral homesteads and a still thriving farming complex teaching new generations about agriculture,” Ms Parker said. “It takes inspiration from the colonial farm buildings of the original 1841 Tocal homestead, with carpentry detailing that emulates the craftsmanship of builders a century and a half ago. “The soaring roof trusses of the hall have the grandeur of a Gothic cathedral and were inspired by the Tocal barn designed one hundred years before by Colonial architect . “The astonishing of the chapel is a feat of engineering, while the interior of the chapel is designed to maximise light and sunshine.” Ms Parker said the popularity of Tocal College and the Tocal Field Day in May showed just how important agriculture remains to the story of the Hunter. “Agriculture is a cornerstone of the development of the Hunter Valley,” Ms Parker said. “The Hunter Homesteads Project captures the enduring legacy of the 1830s-1850s homesteads built across the Hunter, such as here at Tocal. “It has investigated not just the heritage buildings from these early pastoral farms, it has also looked at the archaeological potential of the properties; the cultural landscape elements that survive and the people that were the story –quite amazing characters and Images: [Top] Heritage award ceremony with Dr personalities that resonate to this day.” Cameron Archer, Principal Tocal College and The Hon. “The Hunter Homesteads Project identified and documented about two hundred historic Robyn Parker MP Member for Maitland and Minister for homesteads from the period.
