Ship’s Registry: Norway Norwegian Experience - Special Inclusions TRONDHEIM WITH NIDAROS CATHEDRAL Norway’s original capital, Trondheim was founded as early as 997 by the Viking King Olav Tryggvason, who gave the town the name Nidaros. On the tour, you will hear about the city’s many features, including a short stop at Utsikten to admire the city from a high elevation. We continue to Nidaros Cathedral. Built over the burial place of St. Olav, the patron saint of Norway, the construction began as early as 1070. After a guided tour around the cathedral, you will understand why many describe it as the most beautiful religious building in Norway. LOFOTR VIKING FEAST At the Lofotr Viking Museum, the largest Viking building ever found, has been recreated. The original Chieftain’s house was established around 500 AD and was inhabited until around 900 AD. The Chieftain and the Lady of the house invite you to join them for a real Viking feast in the banquet hall. Experience the magic and excitement as they make sacrifices to the Gods, praying that the sun will return to avoid Ragnarok. After the Viking feast, served with home-brewed mead, you will travel by bus to Svolvær and re-join the ship. HISTORICAL WALKING TOUR OF KIRKENES Enjoy a custom 3-hour historical walking tour of Kirkenes. We will walk past two anti-aircraft gun bunkers along the Barents Sea shore, view the Russian monument erected in honor of the Red army which liberated Kirkenes in 1944, go inside the Andersgrotta - a civilian bombshelter during WWII, explore the old library and visit the Borderland Museum which houses a rare Russian Ilyushin Il-2 two-seater fighter-bomber plane and other documents, photos and artifacts. HAMMERFEST MUSEUM The exhibition aims to convey the poignancy of the dramatic events of WWII; the forced evacuation. The conflagration and the restoration. Never before has any war had such dire consequences for the people of Norway. You will be able to learn about how people adjusted to forced evacuation and cave life during the arctic winter of 1944-45, how they rallied optimism and faith, and by dint of sheer willpower built their new homes. See what happened when multicultural communities were “Norwegianised”, standardised and modernised. LOFOTEN WAR MUSEUM Norway’s largest exhibition of uniforms, artifacts and small objects from WWII. The exhibition reflects the time span 1940 to 1945 with all its drama, degradation and brutality. However the museum shows examples of personal sacrifices, unselfishness and courage from that period, and possesses a large library with an extensive collection of literature, original pamphlets and posters from that period. A large number of never before published photographs, mostly from North- Norway, has been collected. HALF-DAY GUIDED BERGEN CITY TOUR Join a custom guided tour focusing on Bergen during WWII. You will visit the sub pens, as well as the Sverresborg Fortress. Inside, the Defense Museum has exhibits that detail both the civilian and military resistance efforts. This area suffered incredible damage in the port of Bergen on April 20, 1944 when the Dutch vessel Voorbode, loaded with 273,000 pounds of dynamite and ammunition, blew up the buildings and structures of Bergenhus. EXCLUSIVE ONBOARD LECTURES & SPECIALLY SELECTED FEATURE FILMS Join us for a series of lectures by Dr. Terje Leiren. Topics for the Northbound Voyage include Viking Culture and Viking Religion & Society. Topics for the Southbound Voyage include Norway, Neutral & Invaded, and Norwegian Resistance to German Occupation. The roundtrip voyage will include all four lecture series. Dr. Leiren will be happy to answer questions and speak to our guests after each special presentation. A specially selected feature film will also be chosen for each voyage. 10/14.

  • Pharmacists Serving Under War Conditions in Northern Norway
PHARMACISTS SERVING UNDER WAR CONDITIONS IN NORTHERN NORWAY Klevstrand, Rolf 2609 Lillehammer, Norway This is a tale of a few pharmacists in three small towns in the northernmost part of Europe during World War Two. The towns were partly destroyed by air raids. This is of course only a small part of the long tale of sufferings during the war. A map of the Northern part of Scandinavia will show the position of the area (Fig. 1). On the map the counties of Norway are marked with different colours, Finnmark, the northernmost in light blue. Fig. 1 Like the rest of Norway Finnmark was occupied by German forces in 1940. When Germany attacked the Soviet Union in June 1941, it became part of an important war zone. The next Fig 2 map (Fig. 2) shows the short distances from the towns Vardø, Vadsø, and Kirkenes to Russia. There were German garrisons in each of them, the largest one in Kirkenes which at times had ten times as many soldiers as the local population. “Festung Kirkenes” was an important supply centre for the forces at the front in northern Russia. This made it an important target for Russian bombers. The town had not less than 328 air raids during the war. Each of the towns had one pharmacy, but there was a shortage of trained pharmacists. In 1940 the government issued a decree concerning the duty to serve for medical personnel. In accordance with this, two recently graduated male pharmacists were ordered to work in the pharmacies of Kirkenes and Vadsø from the beginning of 1944.

  • Revision of the EU's Arctic Strategy
Sent by e-mail Breivikbotn, November 9th 2020 Input – Revision of the EU’s Arctic strategy Additional input from a total of 40 municipalities in North Norway, to the public consultation regarding the revision of the EU’s Arctic strategy. The municipalities are represented by 5 inter- municipal counsils; Vest-Finnmark Rådet (7 municipalities in Troms and Finnmark County), Vesterålen regionråd (6 municipalities in Nordland County), Salten Regionråd (10 municipalities in Nordland County), Indre Helgeland Regionråd (5 municipalities in Nordland County) and Helgelandsrådet (12 municipalities in Nordland County); 1. In your view, what have been the EU’s main achievements and failures under each of the three priorities in the 2016 Joint Communication? Vest-Finnmark Rådet, Vesterålen regionråd, Salten Regionråd, Indre Helgeland Regionråd and Helgelandsrådet embraces the EU’s engagement in promoting sustainable development in the Arctic. This priority marks a positive shift in how the Arctic is perceived as a strategically important territory, with green growth potential for the region and Europe. The EU’s top priority should be to assist the region in overcoming the Arctic paradox. That is, changing a demographic trend that is inversely correlated with economic growth. A stable demographic development is a necessary precondition for development and security in the Arctic regions. The most important means of meeting regional challenges in the Nordic/European part of the Arctic is by making use of the large natural resources in the region to stimulate economic growth and create new attractive jobs including utilizing the research institutions in the Arctic. The EU’s Arctic engagement shows great achievement, as exemplified by the processes leading to the report on Arctic investment needs in 2017, and the EU Arctic Forum in 2019.

  • Two Truths About Finnmark Architecture – from Norwegian Utilitarianism to Saami Mobility and Love for Nature
DOI: 10.23817/2020.defarch.1-3 EWA CISEK ORCID: 0000-0002-7613-6612 Wroclaw University of Science and Technology, Poland TWO TRUTHS ABOUT FINNMARK ARCHITECTURE – FROM NORWEGIAN UTILITARIANISM TO SAAMI MOBILITY AND LOVE FOR NATURE DWIE PRAWDY ARCHITEKTURY FINNMARKU – OD NORWESKIEJ UTYLITARNOŚCI DO SAAMSKIEJ MOBILNOŚCI I UMIŁOWANIA NATURY. Abstract The subject of the study is contemporary architecture of Finnmark, the northernmost region of Norway, where influences of two cultures, i.e. Norwegian and Sami clash. The purpose of the research is to show that both the internal truth of a work, resulting from a deep connection of the Saami culture with nature and their mobile lifestyle and the other truth – the truth of time, resulting from the utilitarian nature and simplicity of the preferred forms of Norwegians, which constitute a response to the difficult coexistence with natural elements as well as with dark circumstances that occurred in the past of this region, lie at the root of architecture of this region. They are complemented by the truth of art – cosmological and animalistic motifs reflecting the order of nature and own truths of authors of works which emphasize spectacular landscapes and phenomena of a place. Sometimes the fusion and intercultural transfer result in surprising as well as unique spatial solutions. Keywords: Norwegian architecture, architecture of the Norwegian Saami people, architecture of Finnmark Streszczenie Przedmiotem opracowania jest współczesna architektura Finnmarku, najbardziej na północ wysuniętego regionu Norwegii, gdzie ścierają się wpływy dwóch kultur: norweskiej i saamskiej.
