Ship’s Registry: Norway Norwegian Experience - Special Inclusions TRONDHEIM WITH NIDAROS CATHEDRAL Norway’s original capital, Trondheim was founded as early as 997 by the Viking King Olav Tryggvason, who gave the town the name Nidaros. On the tour, you will hear about the city’s many features, including a short stop at Utsikten to admire the city from a high elevation. We continue to Nidaros Cathedral. Built over the burial place of St. Olav, the patron saint of Norway, the construction began as early as 1070. After a guided tour around the cathedral, you will understand why many describe it as the most beautiful religious building in Norway. LOFOTR VIKING FEAST At the Lofotr Viking Museum, the largest Viking building ever found, has been recreated. The original Chieftain’s house was established around 500 AD and was inhabited until around 900 AD. The Chieftain and the Lady of the house invite you to join them for a real Viking feast in the banquet hall. Experience the magic and excitement as they make sacrifices to the Gods, praying that the sun will return to avoid Ragnarok. After the Viking feast, served with home-brewed mead, you will travel by bus to Svolvær and re-join the ship. HISTORICAL WALKING TOUR OF KIRKENES Enjoy a custom 3-hour historical walking tour of Kirkenes. We will walk past two anti-aircraft gun bunkers along the Barents Sea shore, view the Russian monument erected in honor of the Red army which liberated Kirkenes in 1944, go inside the Andersgrotta - a civilian bombshelter during WWII, explore the old library and visit the Borderland Museum which houses a rare Russian Ilyushin Il-2 two-seater fighter-bomber plane and other documents, photos and artifacts. HAMMERFEST MUSEUM The exhibition aims to convey the poignancy of the dramatic events of WWII; the forced evacuation. The conflagration and the restoration. Never before has any war had such dire consequences for the people of Norway. You will be able to learn about how people adjusted to forced evacuation and cave life during the arctic winter of 1944-45, how they rallied optimism and faith, and by dint of sheer willpower built their new homes. See what happened when multicultural communities were “Norwegianised”, standardised and modernised. LOFOTEN WAR MUSEUM Norway’s largest exhibition of uniforms, artifacts and small objects from WWII. The exhibition reflects the time span 1940 to 1945 with all its drama, degradation and brutality. However the museum shows examples of personal sacrifices, unselfishness and courage from that period, and possesses a large library with an extensive collection of literature, original pamphlets and posters from that period. A large number of never before published photographs, mostly from North- Norway, has been collected. HALF-DAY GUIDED BERGEN CITY TOUR Join a custom guided tour focusing on Bergen during WWII. You will visit the sub pens, as well as the Sverresborg Fortress. Inside, the Defense Museum has exhibits that detail both the civilian and military resistance efforts. This area suffered incredible damage in the port of Bergen on April 20, 1944 when the Dutch vessel Voorbode, loaded with 273,000 pounds of dynamite and ammunition, blew up the buildings and structures of Bergenhus.
