Amla, 31, batted for more than eight hours to frustrate the Sri Lankan spinners who shared nine wickets between them to bowl out South Africa for 282 in their first innings. Sri Lanka, who made 421 in their first essay, were 11-0 at stumps in their second innings on the third day for an over- all lead of 150. Off-spinner Dilruwan Perera (5-69) grabbed a five-wicket haul, his second in five Tests, while left-armer Rangana Herath chipped in with 4-71. South Africa’s weaknesses against spin were exposed as none of the batsmen, barring Amla, could even make a half- century despite the fact the wicket was no minefield. “There were phases when the runs dried up, it was tough scoring runs,” said South African coach Russell Domingo after the day’s play. “It wasn’t easy for us because of the consistency of their spinners. It would have been great if we had scored 100 more runs. 140-odd is a big lead, it’s a substantial lead. Sri Lanka are obviously in a very good position,” he said. For Amla, it was his first century as South Africa’s Test cap- tain. He faced 382 balls and hit 12 fours in his marathon England’s Captain Alastair Cook effort. No 15, July 8th 2020. The Virtual Wisdener The Newsletter of the Wisden Collectors’ Club hope that readers find the two main arcles in this edion of the VW of interest. I was unsure as to whether I or not to take up space with the 1970 Journal but when I started to read through Tony Lewis’s thoughts on the 1970 season it became an easy choice to make. The full journal will feature in the Virtual Wisdener’s to follow but I will admit that one of the main reasons for re-prin1ng it in full was the reminder that although each years’ Wisden can give us a review of the previous year, it can never really detail - nor does it try - the unfolding season. Reading Lewis’s thoughts on the ‘pro’ and ‘an?’ South AfriCan tour fac?ons and despite thinking that I knew that the tour was CanCelled ‘late’ - it was remarkable to learn that the actual tour was CanCelled well into the English season and the replacement ‘Tests’ against a Rest of The World side, were very has?ly arranged. Could suCh a tour be arranged so quiCkly today? August the 1st is s?ll the day for domes?C CriCket to resume, but nothing really has Changed in the past week apart from the Coun?es agreeing to have both the forms of the game played upon the restart. • Spotlight on Graham Wagg
Shropshire County Cricket Club Newsletter www.shropshireccc.co.uk MAY 2021 Sam Whitney Director of Cricket John Abrahams looks ahead to the 2021 season As we approach the start of our National Counties Cricket Association campaign, it’s an exciting time with much to look forward to. We have played a number of 50-over friendlies over the last month, invaluable in terms of our preparations ahead of our opening NCCA Trophy group game against Northumberland at Oswestry on May 30. The hope for this season is that the players will improve and grow as cricketers and people. We want them to prove to be challenging opponents, represent the county, their clubs and families with pride and conviction, and enjoy the experience. Compared to the Shropshire team that I played in after joining the county as a player in 1989, this is a younger and less experienced group of players. What they do have is ability and skills that will make the county team competitive in the matches that we play. It is an exciting prospect to hopefully put an infrastructure and processes in place that will see them develop and be successful for Shropshire for a long time. We have added the experience of Graham Wagg to the squad. Engaging a professional was challenging after Simon Kerrigan secured a return to the first-class game with Northamptonshire. Graham was always our first choice and we were delighted to be able to finalise a deal to secure his services. Shropshire captaincy to be Graham has contributed already in the friendlies with his performances with bat and ball, and he is already affecting the environment with the standards shared this season that he sets, his competitive outlook and the help and advice he is giving players.
