But momentum was regained as Warwickshire were demolished at Edgbaston on the way back north, the first of several low- scoring games in which every run was that bit more precious, making half centuries from Stephen Moore in the first innings and Steven Croft in the second especially valuable. Kerrigan then made a mockery of any fears that the Bears might threaten a victory target of 244 with astonishing figures of five for seven that he predicted might take him a while to better. As it turned out, he did so within four months. Three wins out of four – almost enough to guarantee safety. But it was in the first ever Roses Match at Aigburth that such dramatic and daft things started happening to suggest this really could be a special year. Lancashire dominated the first couple of days, but then it rained, and Yorkshire resisted, and by the close of day three it had all become too much for one inebriated local who charged across the outfield wearing only a pair of tight underpants, and a paper bag over his head. One of the reasons for this connection is that the linkage between club and county is still very strong. Another is that the players are often supporters too, and rarely has this been clearer than at Taunton, where Glen Chapple and his players triumphed over those who had tipped them for relegation in April and the supporters gained one more argument they could deploy against those who couldn't understand why they spent all their free time watching Lancashire play cricket. JUST minutes after Lancashire were presented with the LV= County Championship trophy for the first time in decades, I made a silly mistake. As Glen Chapple stood on the outfield at Taunton, covered in champagne and with the golden prize in his hands, I asked what at the time I thought was a reasonable question. In his 20th season, he had secured his place in history as the man who led the Red Rose county to their first outright title in 77 years. And he had done it by once again playing through the pain barrier, having torn his hamstring on the opening day of the deciding match against Somerset. As he walked back up the Old Trafford steps, the Members sang 'Auld Lang Syne' to him.” “It was a lovely day,” Medlock recalls. “I had gone to see Hobbs, and he obliged by getting a century.” However he is also able to talk with authority on such Lancashire greats as Duckworth, Paynter and Ernest Tyldesley. “Tyldesley was a wonderful, stylish player,” Ken explained. “I admired Duckworth's technique – he was a fearless cricketer. Paynter was a little left-hander, who didn't come to Lancashire until his mid-20s because he had a job away from the game, and a wonderful hooker of the ball. “Len Hopwood, who I knew because he had come from the High Peak League, had a very good season, scoring something like 1800 runs and taking more than 100 wickets.
