All Change!

I know there are lots of views BUT We have all been told, that we MUST wear masks in every shop, including our local ones, and also, even outside anywhere, when we cannot maintain a safe distance of at least two metres from others. This instruction is about protecting others from each of us, as so many carriers of COVID, of all ages, are genuinely unaware that they are carrying the virus but are still able to spread it to others. This is so different from old fashioned flu or a heavy cold because we know we have either of those very quickly, so we spread it much less before taking to our bed. Some people are against wearing a mask for a variety of reasons. None of us like wearing them, but for some, such as those with severe asthma or other breathing issues, they are a real problem. Please be kind to those not wearing them, as we don’t know what problems they may have. However, if it is just by choice that someone will not wear a mask, which is their right outside (as I write this) in the fresh air and where they maintain at least two metres from others not from their household, it is also the right of the rest of us to stay safe from them. Although recent good news is that wearing a mask apparently also does offer some limited protection from those about us who cannot, or will not, wear theirs, it is not as safe as if all of us that can wear them, do so. Every time. We might be life-savers. Please, continue to stay safe, but also help keep others safe by wearing your mask.

Good News Corner  Young people of all ages returned to school, college and university.  Rev’d Will held the first service (I believe but I may be wrong!) from Terling Ford. What a lovely service on a warm summer day!  The Owl’s Hill Tea Room, The Square & Compasses, The Rayleigh Arms all increased their opening. Check their websites for their latest details of opening and reservations details.  Ruby’s greengrocery (and more) now hopes to become a permanent feature in Faulkbourne.  The restaurant re-opened at the Cross Keys White Notley.

The Vicar’s letter from Rev’d Paul

Most, or perhaps all, readers will be familiar still today. In October, we're with the notion that the British are sometimes presented with a delightful called a nation of 'animal lovers', and for a great occasion to celebrate animal number of people this is no doubt true. life from around the world in all of it's varied forms with the 4th Just a little research into some of the most recent of the month being St Francis' figures suggests that as a nation we own feast day. But how the clocks have gone back the nights really start to often do we take all of this for granted? Like so draw in. But before we start to feel too despondent many other aspects of our lives we can get used to about all this, let's remember that it's also a great having wonderful things around us when we share time of year to curl up indoors on the sofa watching time with them every day. Lest We Forget This year's Poppy Appeal will be unlike the British public has ever known it, as the Royal British Legion (RBL) revealed it will scale back street collectors and focus on contactless donations due to coronavirus. A spokesman for the RBL said it was "exploring ways to minimise the impact of Covid-19 and ensure that all activity aligns with current restrictions and social distancing guidelines. Whilst the Covid-19 pandemic has impacted the ways in which we can deliver the Appeal this year, the Poppy Appeal 2020 is very much still going ahead and plans are well underway.” "The safety and well-being of our volunteers, staff and members is paramount. To protect those most at risk, we have taken the decision to advise collectors who fall into the vulnerable category not to take part in activity on behalf of the Poppy Appeal that would expose them to any additional risks whilst coronavirus is still present," he said. The spokesman added: “Members of the Armed Forces Community are suffering significant hardship as a result of the Covid-19 outbreak and we at The Royal British Legion will do everything we possibly can to support them during these difficult times.” The Royal British Legion charity, which raises more than £50million each year for both veterans and serving military personnel, hopes to introduce "point of sale donations" where shoppers pay at supermarket tills or online and will be asked if they would like to round up their total to the nearest pound. In the Terling & Fairstead area we will be asking the local businesses and the school, that usually support us, to have a collection box at their location. This will enable those that would like to continue to support such a worthy charity, a place to make their donations during this most unusual of times. In 2020 we will be particularly remembering those that fell in 1920 as a result of WWI and those who were killed in 1940, the second year of WWII. They are: Corporal Edward Warner, Machine Gun Corps (Infantry), who died on 20th April 1920 and who is buried in Fairstead Cemetery Private Dennis Walter Mackrow, The Buffs (Royal East Kent Regiment) who died between 10th May 1940 and 23rd June 1940, aged 19 and who is buried in the Merris Communal Cemetery. Flying Officer Gerald Ivo Cuthbert Royal Air Force 607 Sqdn., who died on 14th May 1940 aged 28 and who is buried at Hotton War Cemetery Sapper Trevor Hugh Easter Royal Engineers who died on 16th May 1940 aged 18 and who is buried in Terling Cemetery. Named crosses will be laid in their honour at the Remembrance Service on Church Green in November. If you are related to these men and would like to lay their cross please let me know before the day of the service on 01245 233 337 Heather Cutler

Sadly, we have been told that “it is advisable not to hold any Mothers' Union meetings this year”. We will keep members advised by this magazine and by phone of any revision to this guidance. Jackie

The Hon Jean Elizabeth Strutt 1924-2020

The Hon Jean Elizabeth Strutt died on 15th August, 2020. She was 96. She was born Jean Elizabeth Davidson on 19th June, 1924, daughter of the 1st Viscount Davidson, GCVO, CH, CB, PC [1889-1970], by his wife the former Hon Frances Joan Dickinson [1894-1985] On 17th December, 1952, she married the Hon Charles Richard Strutt [1910-1981], son of the 4th Baron Rayleigh. ‘Mrs Charles’ worshipped regularly at All Saints’ Church and supported many village organisations. Although for the past three years or so she had been unable to come in person she was still very interested in all that was going on at the church and in the village. Just two weeks before she died she attended the wedding of her granddaughter at All Saints’, a very happy occasion. Her funeral service, conducted by her nephew, Rev Colin Fox, assisted by former Bishop of Chelmsford the Right Reverend Dr John Waine, a family friend, was also held at All Saints’ and she is buried with her husband in the churchyard. We send our condolences to her family and friends.

Snippets of history in the 4Ps Now here’s couple of strange items from Fairstead history.

Can you say why on Saturday 05 September 1936 the Aberdeen Press and Journal newspaper reported this?

Did you know that a direct descendant of King Robert III of Scotland also had a grandfather who was Rector at Fairstead Church?

Joyce Great and WI, of which I am a member, managed to have one very socially distanced, masked meeting before the latest set of precautions came in. Just a very informal meeting, with a lot of chatting, as you can imagine with twenty two women who have not met for over six months. It was nice to at least have the opportunity to get together before the winter. Autumn is approaching fast, the evidence is all around. Harvest is done and dusted, the fields are now looking brown and bare, everywhere looks very dry. This is not the case all over the country, up North in Lancashire apparently they’ve had loads of rain and the ground is saturated. The trees are turning colour and will soon begin to look really colourful before the leaves drop. It looks like we are all about to experience one of the most difficult Winters ever, certainly the most unusual. We need to prepare as much as possible for long nights and short days. Plan what you will do during the time, start a hobby, get stocked up not with Choose your route - carefully!

When new neighbours moved in next door, they held a House Warming party and invited the entire road. My husband and I were glad to go along, as our daughters were both five years old. But next morning I was taken aback when my daughter told me that the mother had taken her into the kitchen and given her ‘a spirit guest’, which my daughter had really enjoyed. Now she wanted me to get her ‘a spirit guest.’

I was wondering how to contact the local vicar for exorcism when I realised that my daughter meant ‘asparagus’.

Telling the time

The cable repairman was on my street and asked me what time it was.

I told him it was between 1:00 pm and 5:00 pm.

Where?

The police officer asked me where I had been between 5 and 6. He seemed irritated when I answered “kindergarten.”

Home

I just saw a local burglar kicking his own front door in. I asked him what he was doing.

He replied, “Working from home.”

Heating Oil As it comes to the time when you are thinking about topping up your heating oil tank for winter, with the value of fuel it is worth considering its security. In the more isolated parts of the countryside it is primarily domestic properties that have been targeted by the heating oil thieves, but we have also seen such thefts at farms and other businesses. There are several security devices available that will protect your fuel supplies - details of which can be found via your fuel supplier or local plumber’s merchant. One such system is Tank Commander www.commandersecurities.co.uk which has “Secured by Design” accreditation https:// www.securedbydesign.com/ . Products like this will detect a dramatic drop in fuel and notify you by phone and/or audible alarm. There are also other similar security products that can add onto an existing intruder alarm system, whilst others may protect the filler cap and there are of course the conventional locks. Another consideration would be concealing it with landscaping and spiky planting around the tank, restricting access to it with gates or fencing, and where possible locating the tank under lighting in view of lived in rooms within the house. The Illusion of occupancy

As the nights draw in earlier don’t forget to use table lamps on timers, and there are TV simulators such as “Fake TV” that produces lighting that resembles a television switched on within a room. Consider installing external “Dusk till dawn” lighting and remember to ensure gates are in good condition, closed and locked. Other products available to make it appear that you are home are a movement sensor that activates an appliance plugged into a plug socket and doorbells that you can answer remotely after viewing the caller; an internet search will find these and other security products.

If you would like further advice regarding security please look at the website www.essex.police.uk/cp/crime-prevention/ and https://www.securedbydesign.com/ .

Naturally we also ask locals to report any unusual activity to police in an emergency on 999 or after the event on 101 or “Do it online” www.essex.police.uk/ do- it-online/report-a-crime/ or to Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Are you experiencing domestic abuse? You are not alone.

False Faulkbourne ‘Facts’!

A wonderful example of the need to check ‘facts’ was recently found on news media. Spotted on Essex Live News feed was an article about the “The abandoned and lost villages of Essex stuck in time ” which included an article about Faulkbourne! The Essex Live News author had decided that now all that remained was the church and small cluster of houses and almost no residents. I am pleased to say Essex News Live have now decided that Faulkbourne is neither abandoned nor lost, and have removed their incorrect article. However, they only did so because Melanie wrote to Essex Live News with the following defence of this historic, but very much alive and much loved, village.

Good afternoon May I suggest that before you write about a Village in the way that you have written about Faulkbourne you check your facts first. This Village has a population of approximately 100 people, including children, all very proud of the rural setting in which they live. It is completely wrong to say that all that is left is the Church. Firstly, we do, of course, have the manor house known as Faulkbourne Hall which is in private ownership. There are several houses which are set back from the road down the country lanes and would not have been visible from a quick drive by which would reveal the "cluster" of houses to the north of the Church which you refer to. We also have a Village Hall in the centre of the Village which was built by the landowners in 1927 and is much used by both the residents and non residents for meetings, parties and day and evening classes. The Village Hall is well maintained and much loved with a fully equipped kitchen, large main hall with a raised stage as well as a large garden at the back. We have a Coffee Morning once a month in the Village Hall, well attended by the residents as well as the occasional "pop up" restaurant style evening meal which is always oversubscribed. A new addition to the Village is a Farm Shop which started trading at the beginning of lockdown and now looks set to become a fixture of the Village. We also had a takeaway service cooked and served from the Village Hall during lockdown, Thursdays to Sundays each week - enjoyed by us all. We are also shortly to benefit from ultrafast fibre broadband as cables have been laid during the summer along our road which also serve the residents of the farm houses/cottages down the country lanes. There is a very thriving community spirit here which was evident during lockdown and the Thursday night clapping for the NHS in which most of the residents participated and also by everyone's concern for each other, i.e, offers to help with shopping, collecting medicines, etc. There are 2 to 3 services in the Church each month and during lockdown, as soon as we were permitted to do so from June onwards, the Church was open every day from sunrise to sunset for private prayer. We hold a traditional Harvest Service, Remembrance Sunday Service, Christingle and Christmas service as well as Easter services. The Church is much loved, well maintained with the churchyard well trimmed and to a far better standard than most. Perhaps you would take the opportunity shortly to correct what has previously been written, i.e., that Faulkbourne is not one of the "abandoned" villages lost in time in Essex - far from it. Yours sincerely Melanie Hicks Churchwarden The Parish Church of St Germanus, Faulkbourne

THE PARISH CHURCH OF ST GERMANUS FAULKBOURNE Please join us on Sunday 25th October at 6pm for a Taizé service

A time and space to relax, be prayerful and draw closer to God.

Prayer and silence are at the heart of the Taizé experience. Taizé has spawned a unique style of worship that has become popular in churches, retreat centres and seminaries throughout the world. The singing of distinctive and much-repeated prayer chants during candlelit prayer services is one of its trademarks. Taizé music highlights simple phrases, usually lines from the Psalms or other pieces of scripture, repeated or sung in canon. The repetition is designed to help meditation and prayer.

Why and How Do They Do That?

At the start of harvest this year there was some colourful banter on the Terling Facebook page about why, when the weather was so hot and people had trouble sleeping, the local farmers were making so much dust and noise well into the night, even at weekends. Longer term residents politely pointed out that without the long working summer hours the harvest would not be brought in until spoilt by rain, sun or rotted in the ground. Furthermore, without the harvest, those complaining would not get bread or beer on their tables. The National Farmers Union (NFU) is currently running some home schooling videos and I found them interesting too! Hope you do as well. Here is the first, which might explain some of those strange pongs which also gather complaints on Facebook from people perhaps more used to city smells. How farmers use compost to fertilise the soil – with farmer Emily The compost acts as a soil conditioner and helps to put nitrogen, potassium, and phosphate in the soil, which helps crops to grow. Emily farms with her family in Essex at Foxes Farm. She produces ‘Kids Learn on the Farm’ videos to educate families about farming. Past Horticultural Shows

Sadly, because of the virus the 2020 Horticultural Show has been cancelled, but we thought it might be nice to look back on some entries from the past.

Email us at [email protected] 35 The Parish News The Magazine for the Parishes of Fairstead, Faulkbourne, Terling & White Notley Terling School News Terling C of E Primary school had a lovely return to school after the summer holidays. All children are now back in school and enjoying their class bubbles. Unfortunately after school clubs are not taking place at present and the children have adapted well to the new virtual assembly in their classrooms.

Historic Terling Group We had just a short virtual meeting in September, courtesy of free Zoom, but were pleased to welcome Debbie from the Rayleigh Arms who has all sorts of interesting plans for historic Terling displays in the pub. Perhaps you have some pictures or tales to tell? Anne Dyster told us that, sadly, much of the work on Terling Tales has been suspended as it is not easy in these COVID days, to arrange to speak to some of our older residents. However she is currently searching for ‘stories of teams’ within the village, such as ‘Tales of a darts team’. Can you help? She would love to hear from you. Please email us your notes, ideas and thoughts, however short or long, on [email protected]. We are looking for a volunteer database developer who will help us with our archive. We currently have several hundred items with pictures, on our MS Access database, but this is now at maximum file size. Can you help? We would be most appreciative. Please email us on [email protected]. See the database and lots more on our website https://historicterling.wordpress.com/ . Did you know that Lady Godiva, who died between 1066 and 1086, once owned Terling? Clare has been researching again! Godiva, who was one of the few Anglo-Saxons and the only woman to remain a major landholder shortly after the Norman conquest, thinking she was on her deathbed, gave away her lands, which included Barking and Terling to the See of Ely! Our next meeting will be at 2.30pm on Thursday October 15th. As this may be on zoom again please email me at [email protected] if you would like to join us. Heather Cutler

Email us at [email protected] 36 The Parish News The Magazine for the Parishes of Fairstead, Faulkbourne, Terling & White Notley Terling Cricket Club As the outdoor season has come to a close, we can reflect on a rather different season! Coronavirus delayed the start of the season until mid July, by that point, the Essex Leagues had cancelled their fixtures for the whole season and many clubs struggled under financial pressures. Sadly, I fear a number of clubs with fall to the pandemic. Notwithstanding this, Terling have had their most positive few months in recent history! We have had a great number of children attending the Sunday training sessions – topped off with an adults & child ‘Terrier’ fixture and then in the middle of September, our first fixture against another club. Both were lovely mornings, the children (and parents!) had a lot of fun – and a great learning experience. As equally exciting, some of the juniors are now making the step in to playing adult cricket – which is great to see! In the adult sides, we had numerous fixtures against faces old and new – with many players scoring their first 50 or getting the first 5fer – again, pleasingly, we fielded two sides a weekend with almost two unique sets of players. A final note, of CONGRATULATIONS! On 10th September, Terling Pandas were crowned Champions in their LMS League, which meant we faced a daunting trip to play the runners up of the Basildon League. On 13th September, we travelled to Brentwood CC and beat our opponents (Boom Boom XI) to reach the Final – where we faced a side of predominantly Brentwood 1st XI players (Brentwood CC have 6 Saturday sides – which gives you an idea of their strength versus a village side like Terling). Bowling first, Terling restricted our opponents to 141-6 off their 20 overs (with 2 outstanding run outs courtesy of Alex Taylor and Charlie Gibson and some excellent bowling from Louis Gibson, Adam Twin, Liam Humphries and Keith Dawson). In reply, Terling got the required runs off 19 overs for the loss of 3 wickets. Charlie Gibson hitting 51* and Marti Cullum a measured 37 before being given out LBW. My thanks go to all of the team who were part of the journey that got us to finals day – and to those whom The Essex LMS Champions! 2020 played in the finals (including our reserves, Ben Spooner and Russell Thorpe). Furthermore, thanks to Russell for organising the squad, Captaining us all the way to the Finals and then selflessly standing down to allow others to play in his place. That’s it for another season – a somewhat truncated one – but one full of promise and memories! Tim Harrison Chairman. As a final point, Terling Pandas were crowned Champions of Essex in the LastManStands 2020 competition on Sunday - a huge achievement and one I am immensely proud of! Here’s the winning side - captained by Russell Thorpe, with many players from the village.
