Ik zou daarom graag de mensen willen bedanken die aan dit resultaat bij gedragen hebben. Ik was misschien nooit gaan promoveren zonder de aanmoediging van Joes Segal, gedurende en na mij n studie. Hij was degene die mij op de vaca- ture wees en mij vervolgens hielp bij het formuleren van mij n onderzoeks- voorstel. Beatrice de Graaf, Jacco Pekelder en mij n goede vriendin Annelies waren zo vriendelij k kostbare tij d vrij te maken om mij n onderzoeksvoorstel te becommentariëren en mij zeer nuttige tips te geven. Bij zondere dankbaarheid ben ik ook verschuldigd aan mij n promotor Ton Nij huis voor de begeleiding in de afgelopen jaren. Altij d kritisch, precies en analytisch, hielp hij mij dit proefschrift te maken tot wat het is. Ik ben dankbaar voor de vrij heid die hij me gegeven heeft om mij n eigen pad te bewandelen en soms een zij weg te proberen en vond het prettig te weten dat hij tegelij kertij d klaarstond om raad te geven als dat nodig was. Dankzij de goede sfeer op het Duitsland Instituut, waar ik gelukkig ook steeds weer in aanraking kwam met de wereld buiten de wetenschap, heb ik ongetwij feld dit proefschrift met meer plezier kunnen schrij ven. Daarvoor dank ik al mij n collega’s. Medepromovendi Froukje, Katharina, Barbara en Britta luisterden naar mij n hoogte- en dieptepunten en hielpen me verder te komen als ik vastzat. Ik was nooit zo ver gekomen met de Poolse teksten in mij n onderzoek zonder alle mensen die mij geholpen hebben me deze taal eigen te maken. Ik dank in het bij zonder Elżbieta Niemczuk-Weiss, Rene Genis en Arent van 542 Nieukerken van de Universiteit van Amsterdam, evenals mij n ‘taalmaatjes’ Aleksander Sroczyński en Magda Szyca die mij n gestamel hebben aange- hoord en mij door menig Poolse tekst heen hebben gesleept. Voor de inhoud van het proefschrift ben ik bovenal dank verschuldigd aan de vele betrokkenen die tij d hebben vrij gemaakt om mij in een interview te woord te staan. Velen van hen hebben daarnaast uit hun persoonlij ke archief materiaal voor mij opgezocht. Ik bewaar goede herinneringen aan hun hulpvaardigheid en vele prettige en interessante gesprekken. Ik heb mij ook erg verheugd over de vriendelij ke ondersteuning die ik in de vele ar- chieven in Nederland, Duitsland en Polen heb ontvangen. Bij zonder warme herinneringen koester ik aan de uitgebreide hulp van de medewerkers van het IISG en het Archiv Grünes Gedächtnis. De eindfase van mij n promotie werd beduidend lichter gemaakt door de hulp van mij n meelezers. De meeste dank ben ik verschuldigd aan mij n ouders, voor het enthousiasme waarmee zij zich aan deze klus hebben gewij d, en aan mij n collega Krij n, zonder wiens precieze en levendige commentaar ik de laatste slag niet had kunnen maken. Annette Geßner, Natalia Kulik, Iwona Guść, Wieke Rusman en Ad Arens ben ik dankbaar voor de laatste grammaticale en spellingscontrole van Duitse, Poolse en Nederlandse teksten. Een proefschrift schrij f je voor een belangrij k deel alleen en daarom is het des te belangrij ker dat er daarbuiten mensen zij n die je steunen, waar je op kunt vertrouwen en die je soms afleiding bieden. Ik wil hier heel graag mij n familie en vrienden bedanken, die mij dit alles in overvloed geboden heb- ben. Vooral mij n ouders zij n door hun nooit aflatende trots en interesse een voortdurende steun voor mij n geweest. Jullie hebben voor mij de moeilij ke periodes van mij n proefschrift zoveel gemakkelij ker gemaakt door hulp te bieden waar ik zelf niet om had durven vragen. De vrienden die ik aan de studie, Amnesty, lindy hop en turnen heb overgehouden dank ik voor de vele leuke tij den buiten het schrij ven om en voor de hartverwarmende steun in de slotfase. Dat ik hier slechts enkelen van jullie kan noemen, betekent niet dat ik jullie niet allemaal dankbaar ben. Mij n laatste woorden van dank gaan uit naar Stef. Meermaals hebben we de grap gemaakt dat ik mij n proefschrift niet dankzij , maar ondanks jou heb afgemaakt. Hoe vaak heb je niet gezegd dat ik eens achter die computer vandaan moest komen. Hoe veel moeilij ker was het soms om weer eens voor langere tij d naar het buitenland te vertrekken, als jij thuis bleef. Desondanks ben jij een cruciaal onderdeel van dit resultaat. Je voortdurende steun, ook DANKWOORD 543 in de tij d die ik ver van jou moest doorbrengen, betekende en betekent ontzettend veel voor me. Jouw vertrouwen en zekerheid helpen mij keer op keer mij n eigen onzekerheid opzij te zetten en zelfvertrouwen te vinden. Je weet niet half hoe zeer jij een rustpunt bent in mij n leven. Ten slotte wil ik nog kort enkele woorden wij den aan twee mensen die belangrij k waren voor dit onderzoek en die helaas het verschij nen ervan niet meer mee mogen maken. Edward Klimczak was mij n eerste leraar Pools en bleek later ook een bron van informatie voor mij n onderzoek. Ik ben hem ontzettend dankbaar dat hij mij ondanks zij n ziekte nog te woord wilde staan. Jan Minkiewicz was één van mij n eerste en voornaamste in- terviewpartners. A. History of the Socialist International and DSA The Socialist International (SI) has its political and intellectual origins in the nineteenth century socialist movement. Its predecessors were the First International (1864-1876), of ​ ​ which Karl Marx was a leader, and the Second International (1889-1916). In the period of ​ the Second International, the great socialist parties of Europe (particularly the British Labour Party, German Social Democratic Party, and the French Section of the Workers International) formed and became major electoral forces in their countries, advancing ideologies heavily influenced by Marx and political programs calling for the abolition of capitalism and the creation of new systems of worker democracy. The Second International collapsed when nearly all of its member parties, breaking their promise not to go to war against other working people, rallied to their respective governments in the First World War. The Socialist Party of America (SPA)—DSA’s predecessor—was one of the very few member parties to oppose the war. Many of the factions that opposed the war and supported the Bolshevik Revolution came together to form the Communist International in 1919, which over the course of the 1920s became dominated by Moscow and by the 1930s had become a tool of Soviet foreign policy and a purveyor of Stalinist orthodoxy.

The public debate over this policy reflects rising concerns in southern Africa over who should benefit from globally-significant resources. The goal of this thesis is to apply a critical geopolitics approach to create space for the consideration of Namibian perspectives on this topic, rather than relying on Western geopolitical and political discourses. Using a mixed methods approach, I analyze Namibians’ opinions on foreign involvement, particularly involvement in natural resource extraction, from three sources: China, South Africa, and the United States.

The 11 July 2006 Mumbai train bombings were a series of seven bomb blasts that took place over a period of 11 minutes on the Suburban Railway in Mumbai (formerly known as Bombay), capital city of the Indian state of Maharashtra and India's financial capital. 209 people lost their lives and over 700 were injured in the attacks. Details The bombs were placed on trains plying on the western line of the suburban ("local") train network, which forms the backbone of the city's transport network. The first blast reportedly took place at 18:24 IST (12:54 UTC), and the explosions continued for approximately eleven minutes, until 18:35, during the after-work rush hour. All the bombs had been placed in the first-class "general" compartments (some compartments are reserved for women, called "ladies" compartments) of several trains running from Churchgate, the city-centre end of the western railway line, to the western suburbs of the city. They exploded at or in the near vicinity of the suburban railway stations of Matunga Road, Mahim, Bandra, Khar Road, Jogeshwari, Bhayandar and Borivali.

Im Folgenden soll es um die Partei Die Grünen gehen, die Entwicklung ihrer Positionen zum Ost-West-Konflikt und zur darin eingebetteten deutschen Frage. Dabei ist die Positionierung der Grünen nur adäquat nachzuvollziehen, wenn man das generelle Politikverständnis der Akteure dieser Partei berücksichtigt. «Wir sind weder rechts noch links, sondern vorn!»,1 lautete das Credo, mit dem sich Die Grünen als «Alternative zu den herkömmlichen Parteien»2 Ende der 1970er Jahre präsentierten und sich quer zum bestehenden Parteiensystem in der BRD verorteten. Mit gleicher Radikalität postulierten sie in ihrem Saarbrücker Bundesprogramm von 1980 ihre Gegnerschaft zu den sogenannten Industriegesellschaften in Ost und West: «Sowohl aus der Wettbewerbswirtschaft als auch aus der Konzentration wirtschaftlicher Macht in staats- und privatkapitalistischen Monopolen gehen jene ausbeuterischen Wachstumszwänge hervor, in deren Folge die völlige Verseuchung und Verwüstung der menschlichen Lebensbasis droht.»3 Die Partei machte sich für einen ökologisch-humanistisch-pazifistischen dritten Weg stark.

Current policies have begun to capitalize on a tentative movement among nations in the region to address certain situations which are prohibiting stabilization. However, with the existence of an international consensus concerning the illegality of the occupation of Namibia and the dehumanization of the policy of apartheid more could be done to advance a multilateral approach toward southern Africa. In short, a real opportunity to bring peace to a troubled region is being missed. Part of the problem is lack of accurate information and understanding of what is happening in the region. Advocacy and passion have often clouded or distorted reality. This past March, former Governor William Milliken and I were co-chairmen of "Myth, Reality, and the Future in Southern Africa: Challenges for a New Administration," a policy briefing sponsored by The Carter Center of Emory University and the Ford Foundation.
