This Is a Test ‘BATTLE OF THE BULBS’ CAST BIOS DANIEL STERN (Bob Wallace) – Originally from Bethesda, Maryland, Daniel Stern has been acting professionally since the age of seventeen. Following his high school graduation, he auditioned for the Washington Shakespeare Festival seeking a job as a lighting engineer but ended up with a walk-on role in their production of As You Like It. Shortly thereafter, Stern made his way to New York where he trained to be an actor and began to accumulate several off-Broadway credits including Split, Frankie and Annie, The Mandrake, and The Old Glory. Director Peter Yates gave Stern one of his first breaks when he cast him as one of the four Indiana teenagers in the highly acclaimed film "Breaking Away" for Twentieth Century Fox. Following that, Stern appeared in Woody Allen's "Stardust Memories," Barry Levinson’s “Diner,” Claudia Weill's "Its My Turn" and John Schlesinger's "Honky Tonk Freeway.” Other film credits include "I'm Dancing As Fast As I Can," "Blue Thunder," "Hannah and Her Sisters," "The Boss's Wife," "The Milagro Beanfield War," "Born in East L.A." and "D.O.A." Stern is also widely known for his roles in the feature films “C.H.U.D.,” “City Slickers” and “City Slickers 2,” “Bushwhacked,” “Rookie of the Year,” “Whip It” and the first two “Home Alone” films, in which he played fumbling thief Marv Merchants. In the late 1980s, Stern enjoyed five seasons on the popular and critically acclaimed television comedy, "The Wonder Years,” as the narrator and adult voice of the series’ hero, Kevin Arnold. His other television credits include animated series “Dilbert,” “Hey Arnold!” and “Family Guy,” among others. # # # MATT FREWER (Stu Jones) – Most recently, Gemini Award Nominee Matt Frewer has been seen as the White Knight in Nick Willing’s mini-series “Alice” alongside Oscar winner Kathy Bates. In 2009 Frewer shot four feature films including “Frankie and Alice” with Halle Barry, and “300” director Zack Snyder’s major Warner Brothers release, “Watchmen.” Frewer also appeared in Snyder’s 2004 film “Dawn of the Dead,” one of the top-grossing zombie films of all time. In recent years, Frewer has also traveled to South Africa, where he shot “Darfur,” and China, where he played the lead in the action/adventure film “Wushu Warrior.” (more) HALLMARK CHANNEL/ ‘BATTLE OF THE BULBS’ – Cast Bios – Page 2 Frewer is the son of a career Canadian Navy officer and was raised in Victoria, British Columbia and Ottawa, Ontario. His first love was sports, serving as quarterback on his high school football team, but a serious hockey injury at the age of 16 sidelined his hopes for a sports career. Frewer chose to study acting and traveled to England, where he received a comprehensive classical theatre education. His work on the big screen includes memorable roles like Big Russ Thompson, Rick Moranis' neighbor in “Honey, I Shrunk the Kids” and a nefarious computer genius in “Lawnmower Man 2: Beyond Cyberspace.” Frewer is also a familiar face on television where he has been a series regular on both SciFi Channel’s “Eureka” and CBC’s “Intelligence.” He has also starred in three Sherlock Holmes films for Muse Entertainment, CTV and the Odyssey Channel. Frewer made guest appearances on various series, including “St. Elsewhere,” "Miami Vice" and “Star Trek-The Next Generation,” and had notable roles as historian Edwin O’Rieschauer in the American Playhouse presentation of PBS’s “Long Shadow,” as an arsonist allied with evil in the ABC miniseries “The Stand,” based on the Stephen King novel, and as Alexander Haig in TNT’s “Kissinger and Nixon.” In addition to his long list of fine comedy and dramatic roles, Frewer will always be remembered for his groundbreaking work and creation of pop-culture icon Max Headroom in the 1985 TV movie and 1987 TV series of the same name. Frewer can be seen later this year with Seth Rogan in Rogan’s upcoming, still untitled new feature. # # # ALLISON HOSSACK (Mindy Wallace) – Originally from Steinbach, Manitoba, Canada, Allison Hossack started in the entertainment industry in the early 90s and has been making a name for herself ever since, both in Canada and in the United States. DESCRIPTORS *Advertising; Discourse Analysis; Higher Education; Mass Media; Mass Media Effects; *Mass Media Role; *Mass Media Use; *Programing (Broadcast); *Reader Text Relationship; Television Research; *Television Viewing; Text Structure IDENTIFIERS Intertextuality; *Max Headroom ABSTRACT Max Headroom, the computer-generated media personality, presents a good opportunity for an investigation of the degree of intertextuality in television. Max combines narrative genres (science fiction and film noir), television program types (prime-time episodic narrative, made-for-TV movie, talkshows), advertising and programming, and electronic and print media. Analysis of one channel of discourse, commercials and advertising, shows that neither advertisers nor textual theorists can rest safely on their assumptions. The text involved here is complex in the very sense that culture itself is complex, and readings of media that reduce complexity to a simplistic ideological positioning of readers are reductive and based on an overprivileging of dominance over the intelligence of viewers, and their power to expose and exploit contradictory textual elements. By over-emphasizing the hegemonic and deemphasizing the emancipatory or oppositional, injustice is done to both the complexity of texts, and their potential for encouraging critical positionings among readers. Only through empirical investigation of individuals' readings in a consistent and systematic fashion will it be possible to determine the relationships between viewers and texts.

  • False Authenticity in the Films of Woody Allen
False Authenticity in the Films of Woody Allen by Nicholas Vick November, 2012 Director of Thesis: Amanda Klein Major Department: English Woody Allen is an auteur who is deeply concerned with the visual presentation of his cityscapes. However, each city that Allen films is presented in such a glamorous light that the depiction of the cities is falsely authentic. That is, Allen's cityscapes are actually unrealistic recreations based on his nostalgia or stilted view of the city's culture. Allen's treatment of each city is similar to each other in that he strives to create a cinematic postcard for the viewer. However, differing themes and characteristics emerge to define Allen's optimistic visual approach. Allen's hometown of Manhattan is a place where artists, intellectuals, and writers can thrive. Paris denotes a sense of nostalgia and questions the power behind it. Allen's London is primarily concerned with class and the social imperative. Finally, Barcelona is a haven for physicality, bravado, and sex but also uncertainty for American travelers. Despite being in these picturesque and dynamic locations, happiness is rarely achieved for Allen's characters. So, regardless of Allen's dreamy and romanticized visual treatment of cityscapes and culture, Allen is a director who operates in a continuous state of contradiction because of the emotional unrest his characters suffer.
