Jim Papoulis A BOUT T HE C ONDUCTOR An advocate for quality musical arts in the community, Emily Edgington Andrews is extremely active in Columbia, working with children and adults at every level of their musical development. She is the Fine Arts Department Chair and vocal music teacher at Columbia Independent School, a college preparatory campus. Passionate about exposing students to quality choral music education, she has received recognition for her work in the classroom over the years, most recently having been awarded the Charles J. McClain Distinguished Teaching Award. Emily proudly serves as Choir Director at the historic Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Columbia, MO, where she maintains a thriving music program, conducting the 40+member Adult Choir of volunteer and paid musicians. This year marks her second season as Artistic Director and Conductor of the Columbia Chorale, the city’s mixed-voiced civic choral ensemble, and its youth choir extension, Columbia Youth Choirs, for which she was instrumental in launching. As Assistant Conductor for Prometheus: An American Vocal Consort, Emily manages the ensemble and assists in conducting the highly sought-after twelve-member professional ensemble. She maintains a busy schedule as a private voice teacher, clinician, and adjudicator, serves as the Northeast Missouri High School Choral Vice-President, and is an active member of the American Choral Directors Association and the Missouri Music Educators Association. Emily received her degrees in Music at Truman State University, Kirksville, Missouri (B.A.; M.A.), and at the University of Missouri-Columbia (M.M.). She resides in Columbia, Missouri with her husband Bryan and brand new son, Braydon. ABOUT THE ACCOMPANIST John Gross has been a long time accompanist is the St Louis area. He has held positions in the Opera Theater of Washington University and has been the official accompanist for the Metropolitan Opera and Merola auditions in St Louis. He has recently retired from the Music Department of Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville, Illinois where, as staff accompanist, he collaborated with vocalists and instrumentalists in their Junior, Senior and Master degree recitals. At present he continues as organist at St Lucas United Church of Christ in Sappington,Mo, where he has served for many years. Introduction to Focus 2020 by Joel Sachs The seed for this year’s Focus Festival was planted in December 2018 at a Juilliard doctoral recital by the Chilean violist Sergio Muñoz Leiva. I was especially struck by the sonata of Rebecca Clarke, an Anglo-American composer of the early 20th century who has been known largely by that one piece, now a staple of the viola repertory. Thinking about the challenges she faced in establishing her credibility as a professional composer, my mind went to a group of women in that period, roughly 1885 to 1930, who struggled to be accepted as professional composers rather than as professional performers writing as a secondary activity or as amateur composers.

At Wichita State University’s Ulrich Museum, from September 16 to December 16, 2012, these questions were addressed in an exhibition of work celebrating the centenary of Gordon Parks’s 1912 birth. Titled “The Hard Kind of Courage: Gordon Parks and the Photography of the Civil Rights Era,” this series of deeply profound images offered visual testimony to the heart-rending but courageous sacrifices made by Freedom Riders, the bombing victims Wat the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, the energized protesters at the Great March on Washington, and other participants in the movement. “Photographers of the era,” the exhibition demonstrated, “were integral to advancing the movement by documenting the public and private acts of racial discrimination.”1 Their images succeeded in capturing the strength, fortitude, resiliency, determination, and, most of all, the love of those who dared to step out on faith and stare down physical abuse and death. It is no small thing that all this was done amidst the challenges of being a black artist or writer seeking self-actualization in a racially charged era.

Fischer’s CSO appearances in June are endowed in part by the Nuveen Investments Emerging Artist Fund, which is committed to nurturing the next generation of great classical music artists. Julia Fischer joins Muti and the CSO for Beethoven’s Violin Concerto. Widely recognized as the first “Romantic” concerto, Beethoven’s lush and virtuosic writing in the work opened the traditional form to new possibilities for the composers who would follow him. The second half of the program features Brahms’ Serenade No. 1. Originally composed as chamber music, Brahms later adapted the work for full orchestra, offering a preview of the rich compositional style that would emerge in his four symphonies. The six-movement serenade is filled with lyrical wind and string passages, as well as exuberant writing in the allegro and scherzo movements. German violinist Julia Fischer won the Yehudi Menuhin International Violin Competition at just 11, launching her career as a solo and orchestral violinist.
