Cinematic and wide- ranging, the music of Dálava is beautifully rendered and hauntingly expressive. With Peggy Lee cello, Colin Cowan bass, Tyson Naylor keys, and Dylan van der Schyff drums, the groundbreaking Dálava offers a “stunning fusion of Middle European melody, rock energy, and scratchy avant-jazz textures” (Georgia Straight). Songlines recording artist- celebrating 25 years! DONNY MCCASLIN GROUP June 24 Innovation Series- The Ironworks at 9:30 pm $40 All In Three-time GRAMMY-nominated saxophonist/composer Donny McCaslin’s group collaborated on David Bowie’s masterful final album, Blackstar, matching its rugged, versatile, and “relentlessly intriguing” (NME) sound to Bowie’s immense artistry, generosity of spirit, and outright fearlessness. McCaslin’s “powerful left-field New York jazz band” (The Guardian) features Jason Lindner on keys, bassist Nate Wood, and Mark Guiliana, “a drummer around whom a cult of admiration has formed” (New York Times). The repertoire is deep and expansive; moving from Bowie, to Deadmau5, to the Chainsmokers, to compelling, cutting-edge McCaslin originals, “Bowie’s Last Band” takes genre-defying inspiration from the master’s uncompromising musical vision. NICK FRASER TRIO WITH TONY MALABY AND KRIS DAVIS June 25 Innovation Series- The Ironworks at 9:30 pm $30 All In “If one of the major compositional decisions for an improviser is choosing your partners, then Canadian drummer Nick Fraser shows himself to be a master of the form.” —New York City Jazz Record. The JUNO Award-winning Torontonian’s compositions and group improvisations are intense journeys into the unknown, “moving synchronously from delicate opening figures through a coordinated tumult of sound” (Wholenote). New York tenor saxophonist Tony Malaby (Mark Helias, Fred Hersch) is “one of the most distinctive artists of his time" (AllAboutJazz), while Canadian-born, New York-based pianist Kris Davis’s resolutely individual artistry offers “uncommon creative adventure” (JazzTimes). FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE PERCH HEN BROCK & RAIN June 26 Innovation Series -The Ironworks @ 9:30 pm $30 All In Perch Hen Brock & Rain is a unique combination of two long-time creative duos. Dutch trailblazers Ab Baars (Ken Vandermark) tenor sax/clarinet/shakuhachi and Ig Henneman (Misha Mengelberg) viola, and dynamic New York all-stars Ingrid Laubrock (Mary Halvorson) tenor & soprano sax and Tom Rainey (Tim Berne) drums “converse in a most engaging way, exchanging ideas, lines flowing back and forth throughout… This is a most extraordinary quartet, and one of the finest improvising units of the year” (Downtown Music Gallery). With vast textural and artistic range, Perch Hen Brock & Rain is cerebral and passionate improvisation of the highest order. Thanks to Performing Arts Fund NL. LUC EX NAKED WOLF June 27 Innovation Series- The Ironworks @ 9:30 pm $30 All In Knotty, angular rock rhythms meet scorching free improv in this ecstatic sonic powerhouse. Amsterdam-based multi-national quintet Lue Ex Naked Wolf is known for delivering “infectious, demonic sets charged with wild, hypnotic rock energy and clever improvisations with rapid changes in mood and pulse” (AllAboutJazz). With the gritty acoustic bass guitar of Luc Ex (formerly of Dutch avant/punk band The Ex), the twisted melodies and textures of Felicity Provan cornet/vocals, Yedo Gibson reeds, and Mikael Szafirowski electric guitar/vocals, and the thundering drums of Gerri Jäger, Luc Ex Naked Wolf balances unpredictable expressive outbursts with moments of compact unison blasting, head-bobbing riffs, and fragile lyricism. Thanks to Performing Arts Fund NL. SATOKO FUJII & KAZE June 28 Innovation Series- The Ironworks @ 9:30 pm $30 All In “If you think you can imagine what piano, drums, and two trumpets will sound like, think again.” KPFA Radio Melodic beauty, provocative abstraction, and confrontational fire: KAZE is free jazz at its most creative and powerful. The Japanese/French quartet shares boundless energy and enthusiasm, an insatiable appetite for sonic experimentation, and the disciplined intelligence of accomplished spontaneous composers. With three acclaimed albums under their belt, KAZE is in full flight. This is “bold, uncompromising music” (London Jazz News) featuring pianist Satoko Fujii, the trumpet tandem of France’s Christian Pruvost and Japan’s Natsuki Tamura, and French drummer Peter Orins. Thanks to Institut Français and Spedidam, France. -2- Contact: John Orysik/Media Director - [email protected] Coastal Jazz presents remarkable Vancouver concerts and opportunities to experience some of the best things to do in Vancouver. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CLAUDIA QUINTET June 29 Innovation Series- The Ironworks at 9:30pm $30 All In For over 20 years in their longstanding, preternaturally attuned lineup, Claudia Quintet has bridged modern jazz, chamber, and new music in consistently inventive ways. Drummer/bandleader John Hollenbeck’s compositions are full of clarity, nuance, and space. But the sound of Claudia Quintet is equally about Hollenbeck’s compositional choices as the astounding chemistry of his virtuosic ensemble. “He ‘gets’ each member, and they, him” (AllAboutJazz). Exploratory and engaging, the group features some of jazz’s foremost innovators, including Drew Gress (John Abercrombie, Ravi Coltrane) bass, Matt Moran (Mat Maneri, Nate Wooley) vibraphone, Red Wierenga (Brad Lubman) accordion, and Chris Speed (Endangered Blood, AlasNoAxis) clarinet/tenor saxophone. Thanks to Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation. CAT TOREN'S HUMAN KIND June 30 Innovation Series- The Ironworks at 9:30pm $30 All In Vancouver-born, Brooklyn-based JUNO Award-winning pianist/composer Cat Toren’s Human Kind is a dynamic new project influenced by the free-form, socially conscious jazz of the late ‘60s as well as today’s resurgent civil rights movement. “Beautiful and adventurous” (CBC Radio), Human Kind channels Alice Coltrane and her contemporaries, making a powerful case for the expressive art of jazz’s ability to uplift, engage, and unite people. With local heavy- hitters Dave Say saxophone, Gordon Grdina oud/guitar, Tommy Babin bass, and Dan Gaucher drums, the empathic Toren uses bold atmospheric abstraction and fluid melodies to mix deep human warmth with creative fire! BassDrumBone July 2 Innovation Series- The Ironworks at 9:30pm $30 All In Celebrating its 40th anniversary, this collective trio brings together the transcendent talents of jazz masters Mark Helias (Ornette Coleman, Dewey Redman) bass, Gerry Hemingway (George Lewis, Anthony Braxton) drums, and Ray Anderson (Barry Altschul, Charlie Haden) trombone. “A veritable jazz super-group” with “strikingly intuitive sensibilities” (AllAboutJazz), BassDrumBone manages to somehow be greater than the sum of its impressive parts. With telepathic improvisational rapport, indomitable creative spark, and supreme musicianship, these three strong personalities have spent four decades setting the gold standard for innovative small-group interplay before exceeding it in new and surprising ways. • Justin Brown's NYEUSI
Justin Brown’s NYEUSI (USA) bio “There’s nothing about the way he plays that boxes him into any particular era or camp” - Modern Drummer “I cannot think of a more highly anticipated debut by an artist right now that is also a lynchpin in today’s creative music scene. I will be first to listen” - WBGO Born in Richmond, California (USA), drummer Justin Brown is one of the most versatile and sought after drummers of this generation. After years as an essential member of groups led by Ambrose Akinmusire, Thundercat, and Flying Lotus – he’s also been tapped to round out the sound for Esperanza Spalding, Avishai Cohen (trumpet), Terence Blanchard, Bilal, Vijay Iyer, and many others – Brown is finally ready to extend his reach beyond the drum set to lead his own band, NYEUSI. Justin started drumming at two years-old in church and began his formal jazz education at 10 with the Young Musician’s Program at UC Berkeley and later Berkeley High. Encouraged to attend Juilliard after being awarded a full scholarship, he moved to New York in 2004, but withdrew on the first day to pursue a life-changing career experience over education, playing on the road with Kenny Garrett and Josh Roseman. In June 2018 Justin released his first album as a leader ‘NYEUSI’ on Biophilia Records. Rounding out NYEUSI are Jason Lindner (Now vs Now, Donny McCaslin, David Bowie) and Fabian Almazan (Mark Guiliana Jazz Quartet, Terence Blanchard) on keys, Burniss Earl Travis (Robert Glasper) on bass, and Mark Shim (Mingus Big Band) on wind controller.

  • The Recordings
Appendix: The Recordings These are the URLs of the original locations where I found the recordings used in this book. Those without a URL came from a cassette tape, LP or CD in my personal collection, or from now-defunct YouTube or Grooveshark web pages. I had many of the other recordings in my collection already, but searched for online sources to allow the reader to hear what I heard when writing the book. Naturally, these posted “videos” will disappear over time, although most of them then re- appear six months or a year later with a new URL. If you can’t find an alternate location, send me an e-mail and let me know. In the meantime, I have provided low-level mp3 files of the tracks that are not available or that I have modified in pitch or speed in private listening vaults where they can be heard. This way, the entire book can be verified by listening to the same re- cordings and works that I heard. For locations of these private sound vaults, please e-mail me and I will send you the links. They are not to be shared or downloaded, and the selections therein are only identified by their numbers from the complete list given below. Chapter I: 0001. INTERvIEW TNYCJR: Do you any plans to travel back to Brazil in the near future? AC: I try to go once a year, every two years. If I get to work there, great. If not, I just go to get some inspiration from one of my favorite places in the world, Rio de ANAT Janeiro. There’s some feeling I get that’s very hard to explain. I don’t have any roots in Brazil, no Brazilians in my immediate family and, yet, something about the music, something about Rio makes me feel longing for something that is part of me, but I can’t explain why. JAZZ EDUCATION IN ISRAEL by LEE CAPLAN A Thesis submitted to the Graduate School-Newark Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts Graduate Program in Jazz History and Research written under the direction of Dr. Henry Martin and approved by ___________________________________ ___________________________________ Newark, New Jersey May,2017 ©2017 Lee Caplan ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ABSTRACT OF THE THESIS JAZZ EDUCATION IN ISRAEL By LEE CAPLAN Thesis Director Dr. Henry Martin Jazz Education in Israel is indebted to three key figures – Zvi Keren, Arnie Lawrence, and Mel Keller. This thesis explores how Jazz developed in Israel and the role education played. Jazz Education in Israel discusses the origin of educational programs such as the Rimon School of Jazz and Contemporary Music (1985) and the New School Jazz Program (1986). One question that was imperative to this study was attempting to discover exactly how Jazz became a cultural import and export within Israel. Through interviews included in this thesis, this study uncovers just that. The interviews include figures such as Tal Ronen, Dr. Arnon Palty, Dr. Alona Sagee, and Keren Yair Dagan. As technology gets more advanced and the world gets smaller, Jazz finds itself playing a larger role in humanity as a whole. iii Preface The idea for this thesis came to me when I was traveling abroad during the summer of 2015. I was enjoying sightseeing throughout the streets of Ben Yehuda Jerusalem contemplating topics when all of a sudden I came across a jam session. I went over to listen to the music and was extremely surprised to find musicians from all parts of Europe coming together in a small Jazz venue in Israel playing bebop standards at break-neck speeds.
