How Blue Can You Get? Urban Mythmaking and the Blues in Edmonton, Alberta by Craig Farkash A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts Department of Anthropology University of Alberta © Craig Farkash, 2019 Abstract The blues is a genre of music that is rich in storytelling. Growing out of an oral tradition that has spanned generations, its influence on popular music today is undeniable. Many will have some vague recollection of some of these stories—whether related to blues figures, cities, regions, or to moments in time these are stories shared by the entire blues community, and through them, people have become familiar with the mythical importance of places such as Chicago or the Mississippi Delta to blues music. But how does a system of myth-making work in regions that do not have the luxury of being at a blues crossroads? Using the Edmonton blues scene as a case study, this thesis examines some of the stories told by people who have long called Edmonton their home and who have contributed to the mythologization of the local blues scene and turned it into an unlikely home for the blues. By employing qualitative research methodologies, such as participant observation and in-depth interviews, this study aims to understand the role that mythmaking has played in strengthening the Edmonton blues scene. To demonstrate this, the thesis first introduces the history of the Edmonton blues scene and, more generally, the city itself. It then looks at how myth has been written about by other anthropologists and popular music researchers.

  • Lavelle White “Music Is My Life – and My Life Is Music” by Scott M
Lavelle White “Music Is My Life – And My Life Is Music” By Scott M. Bock her to tour much of the world. But, despite working so many decades as a performer, money has continued to elude the woman whose friends and fans call Miss Lavelle. A deeply religious woman, Lavelle finds solace in worship. She spends her days at home singing to herself, visiting with friends, and cooking- especially soul food and Mexican fare. Though she enjoys her home life, she says that she is always ready to board a plane for another gig. Sitting on her sofa in her Austin apartment, she quickly straightens out the record on her birthplace and sums up her early life. “I was born in Amite, Louisiana, not Mississippi. Amite is where I hung out as a kid. Down there – there were a lot of horrible things. I grew up where we were sharecroppers – cotton and corn. We were really sort of like slaves. I was with my mother. I wasn’t with my dad because my dad walked away and left me when I was five days old. And, that is a thing that really affects a person’s mind all their life. You can’t change it. You just have to live with it. I had like five brothers and four sisters. It was brutish because my brothers couldn’t finish going to school. They had to work in the fields ploughing with mules and horses – bailing hay – all this stuff. I was the baby. We didn’t have the same daddy.

  • Notes on Significance, Uh Holdings and Related Archival Collections, and Associated Acts Or Bands
1 2 3 As the state’s largest industrial city, Houston was a destination for many musicians looking for employment during the early 1900s Blues musicians migrated from the Mississippi Delta, especially during the Great Depression, and Texas blues was born. During this time, notable western swing musicians from the Fort Worth area also migrated to Houston in search of better economy. Along with Houston and Beaumont‐area musicians, they created a flourishing swing scene that evolved into a thriving dance hall and honky tonk scene. Looking for work, black Creoles from Louisiana moved to large, industrial east Texas cities such as Houston. Houston’s Frenchtown was important to the development of zydeco, which formed out of the mixing of Louisiana’s acoustic La La music with 4 urban blues and R&B. Tejano music was influenced by border music, and along with conjunto music, also had its roots in the early twentieth century and became a part of the fiber of Houston Music. 4 With ACA and Goldstar/SugarHill recording studios and labels Starday, Duke and Peacock, and D Records, Houston has long been a center for recording in the region. This image is from an ACA Master Book from early fifties. Hopefully, you can make out Willie Mae “Big Mama” Thornton’s name in the middle of the page. Although Thornton was born in Alabama, her career took off when she moved to Houston and began recording for Don Robey’s labels Peacock and Duke. Recorded at ACA in 1952, Big Mama Thornton’s “Hound Dog” spent several weeks at the number 1 positions on the Billboard charts in 1953.

We launched this newsletter format in December 2017, and in March began to Beginnings incorporate a new color scheme. This month, we’re debuting our new logo, part of the overall rebranding strategy designed for us by the creative wizards at Austin advertising firm GDS&M. It’s an updated look for our organization, to go with the more active role we’ve been taking in the past few years to help dance hall owners and the communities in which they’re located. Now in our eleventh year, TDHP has been building our organizational capacity so that we can provide more and better resources to both dance halls and their fans. Our board of directors have each taken on a project to focus on for 2018, and we recently welcomed our second part-time staff member, Susan Peterson, to assist executive director Deb Fleming and the Board.
