Their latest project, a band shell on the site of a new pocket park at 3705 Lyons Avenue, is called Fifth Ward Jam. The Jam is named after the many zydeco, blues, R&B, soul, and hip-hop jam sessions that have taken place throughout this historic Houston neighborhood. Come and experience the the Fifth Ward Jam on Saturday, October 1st from 4:30 to 7pm. Presentations will feature Texas Zydeco Prince Jabo, legendary Duke Peacock, Texas Johnny Brown, and the Stella-nominated gospel quartet Endurance. The Reuse Warehouse is proud to be a resource for this project, funded by the Houston Arts Alliance, Fifth Ward Community Redevelopment (both new to the warehouse family), TIRZ 18, and the office of Council Member Jarvis Johnson. Growing out of an oral tradition that has spanned generations, its influence on popular music today is undeniable. Many will have some vague recollection of some of these stories—whether related to blues figures, cities, regions, or to moments in time these are stories shared by the entire blues community, and through them, people have become familiar with the mythical importance of places such as Chicago or the Mississippi Delta to blues music. But how does a system of myth-making work in regions that do not have the luxury of being at a blues crossroads? Using the Edmonton blues scene as a case study, this thesis examines some of the stories told by people who have long called Edmonton their home and who have contributed to the mythologization of the local blues scene and turned it into an unlikely home for the blues. By employing qualitative research methodologies, such as participant observation and in-depth interviews, this study aims to understand the role that mythmaking has played in strengthening the Edmonton blues scene. To demonstrate this, the thesis first introduces the history of the Edmonton blues scene and, more generally, the city itself. It then looks at how myth has been written about by other anthropologists and popular music researchers.

Austin, Texas, native Eddie Stout’s dedication to the preservation and celebration of the blues over the past four decades has earned him tremendous respect and admiration within the local blues community. A performing bass player since 1972, Stout has been active in the global expansion of blues. He also has been a prolific producer of African-American roots music, including blues, gospel, and jazz, with 23 the creation of labels such as Pee Wee Records (1984), Dialtone Records (1999), and Dynaflow Records (2014). Stout has served as an international representative, distributor, and publisher for several companies, such as Justice Records, Independent Artists, Doolittle, New West, Antone’s Records, and Malaco Records. Because of his broad knowledge and experience in the field of blues, he is frequently invited to serve as a panelist and label representative at music conventions throughout the world, as well as a producer and director of forty episodes of the popular television show Songwriters across Texas (2012-2013).
