    УДК 81.33 AN ARTISTIC IMAGE METAPHORICITY: CULTURAL MEMORY AND TRANSLATION V.A. Razumovskaya, E.B. Grishaeva . Abstract The article presents a complementary semantic-semiotic analysis of an artistic image in the framework of a literary text. The analysis is followed by post-translation descriptions. Being generated and functioning within a literary text an artistic image is considered to be an extended metaphoric formation primarily destined to fulfill the aesthetic function. Particular attention is paid to the cultural information and memory embodied in a unique cultural code presented in an artistic image and closely connected with its metaphoric characteristics. The present research was conducted on the material of the “strong” text of the Russian culture – “The Master and Margarita” by M. Bulgakov. The artistic image of Bulgakov’s tom-cat Behemoth is a heterogeneous metaphoric formation combining the cultural memory of a Biblical monster Behemoth, zoo-metaphorical characteristics of a hippopotamus (as a real fauna representative) and various connotations of a black tom-cat in its real and mythological hypostases. The research methodology assumes integrated analysis combining mythopoetic, hermeneutic and comparative methods. In the situation of literary translation, a literary image can be considered as a regular unit of translation, the reconstruction of which in “other” languages and cultures requires special translator’s decisions and application of effective translation techniques and strategies. In this catalogue, we focus on a selection of feature films, some of which are sure to screen in competition and oth­ er notable sections at international film festivals. A few of these films have already been released on the domestic market, while others are still in production. I am sure that the coming months will bring a number of great encounters with Polish cinema. 2016 was an exceptionally successful year in Po­ photo by Marcin Kułakowski, Polish Film Institute lish cinema, as shown both by awards received by Polish films at international film festivals and by over 12 million admissions in cinemas across the nation. This excellent result is the outcome of an exceptional diversity of Polish films. Alongside blockbuster films and period pieces, audiences of­ ten chose to see original arthouse films, as well as films that do not shy away from social issues. The 2017 season will bring more of these films to the big screen. In addition to having the entertainment function, it also plays an important role as a carrier and promoter of a specific ideology and worldview. By presenting suggestive images that strongly affect emotions, it can shape public opinion, promote or stigmatize and depreciate selected ethical systems as well as individual and social moral attitudes. In this context, as an important task of the theology of social media, critically analyzing various media messages, and thus feature films and TV series, one can regard a reflection on the forms of presenting figure of Jesus Christ in contemporary cinema. The tension resulting from the fact that the Savior – worshiped and adored by a community of believers – has also become a hero of popular culture requires a proper theological and media analysis. 1.     New Polish Feature Films 2009 New Polish Feature Films 2009 1 Introduction Dear Ladies and Gentlemen, With great pleasure we present you the latest catalogue of recent Polish film productions to be seen in cinemas in 2009. Last year’s Polish Film Festival in Gdynia generated great optimism, we are deeply convinced now that the Polish films are becoming increasingly better in every aspect, thanks to their diversity, originality, and excellent production workmanship. Some of them tell universal stories. I deeply believe that the film is the artistic domain and part of our national heritage which best represents Poland abroad. I am also convinced that the Polish film industry, with its potential and capacity, is still lacking its due recognition and appreciation by the international film community. The Polish Film Institute hopes to change this in 2009. India 2000 , \ Ace. >'o ' f, > 7 V ' V RACE-CONSCIOUS TRAGIC HEROINES IN THE NOVELS OF TONI MORRISON An Abstract In a world where colours are important, black, white, yellow, red and brown are not just bold strokes that constitute works of art or help determine fashions of the Season. They are, unfortunately, shades that define race and identity and have, for centuries, formed the ugly basis of hatred and violence, i>ersecution and prejudice, supremacy and subjugation. It is precisely this politics of colour, its cultural and social connotations, that Toni Morrison has magnificently captured in her novels. Of all Afiican American authors writing today, her work stands out because of its comprehensive and multidimensional approach to the black experience in white America. It was only fitting then that the 1993 Nobel Prize Citation lauded her by describing her as a writer "who, in novels characterized by visionary force and poetic import, gives life to an essential aspect of American reality." Basing on these words, this thesis seeks to show that Morrison's work not only reflects American social reality, but also helps shape it by highUghting the present multiracial nature of society, and thus encotiraging it to think long and deeply about its future so that the attitudes of both black and white Americans toward one another and toward each other may change for the better.

The range and power of how media is transferred – since the time when printing machines were invented in the fifteenth century – has been quite a challenge for specific environments, institutions, ideas and be- liefs; for both, the clerical and secular authorities wanted to influence the distribution of content. The actions of the Catholic Church, in this respect, were to exclude the promotion of heretical ideas, whereas the political power cared about shaping the attitudes of obedience and loyalty (Pokorna-Igna- towicz, 2002). Attempts made to restrict the freedom of the printed word had failed because not all of the authors, publishers and printers conformed to the Church and its rulers; instead, they spread opinions in accordance with their convictions. Reformation can be considered as the first ideological revolution, the success of which was closely related with media coverage (in this case – with the use of print) (Łęcicki, 2013). Censorship in Old Poland In old Poland, the scholars of Krakow Academy, i.e., the Jagiellonian University, were engaged in censorship of religious printing (Szyndler, 1993). The first informative paper was Merkuriusz Polski; the newspa- per issued in 1661 was to gain supporters for the royal politics of the House of Vasa (Myśliński, 2008). The strong influence of ecclesiastical censorship,together with the interference in the secular content in old Poland, that is, until the fall of the First Republic (1795), resulted from the fact that a vast majority of printing houses belonged to the Church (Szyndler, 1993).

    Studia Filmoznawcze 39 Wroc³aw 2018 Marek Lis Uniwersytet Opolski WAJDA I KRZY¯Ż DOI: 10.19195/0860-116X.39.2 O Andrzeju Wajdzie powiedziano i napisano już niemal wszystko: świadczy o tym chociażby niezwykle bogata bibliografia, analizująca zarówno pojedyncze filmy1, jak i całą twórczość reżysera, docenianego na całym świecie, czego wyrazem były również nagrody, zwłaszcza te najbardziej prestiżowe2. Dziełami Wajdy zajmowali się filmowi krytycy i historycy kina3. Oprócz filmów reżyser pozostawił po sobie także teksty pozwalające wejść w jego warsztat i rozumienie własnych dzieł4. Jego znaczenie dla polskiej kultury, jej promocji za granicą, współkształtowania wizji wydarzeń z polskiej (i nie tylko) historii nie budzi wątpliwości; Wajda przywracał nie tylko uczniowskiej pamięci lektury kanonu literatury, bohaterami swych filmów czynił ludzi stojących wobec jakże różnych totalitaryzmów (od rewolucji francu- skiej przez nazizm aż po komunizm). Nie wszystkie jego dzieła są równie udane: 1 Zob. na przykład liczącą ponad 440 stron monografię: K. Kornacki, Popiół i diament Andrzeja Wajdy, Gdańsk 2011. 2 Na festiwalu w Cannes Wajda otrzymał między innymi: w 1957 r. specjalną nagrodę jury za Kanał, w 1978 r. nagrodę Jury Ekumenicznego za Bez znieczulenia, a w 1981 r. Złotą Palmę i nagrodę Jury Ekumenicznego za Człowieka z żelaza. W Moskwie zostały nagrodzone Brzezina (1971) i Ziemia obiecana (1975). Był też laureatem nagród za całość twórczości, między innymi: Europejska Nagroda Filmowa w 1990 r., Złoty Lew za karierę w Wenecji w 1998 r., honorowy Oscar w 2000 r. i honorowy Złoty Niedźwiedź w Berlinie w 2006 r.
