  • Video Killed the Radio Star«
in: Positionen. Beiträge zur Neuen Musik, 1994, 18, 7ff, © Autor von There is nothing in it, it's just a video. Peter Buck, R.E.M.

  • From Popular Music to Film and Digital Media
MUSC 499: The Music Video: From Popular Music to Film and Digital Media University of Southern California, Fall 2014 Tuesday, Thursday, 2:00-3:20 UUC B2 Instructor: Dr. Richard Brown Office: MUS 310 (Office Hour: T/Th 1-2pm) [email protected] www.richardhbrownjr.com Course Description: Since its emergence in the late 1970s, the music video has become the dominant means of advertising popular music and musicians, as well as one of the most influential multimedia genres in history. Music videos have affected aesthetic style in a wide range of film and television genres, introducing experimental and avant-garde techniques to a mass audience. Because most music videos last only a few minutes, it is difficult to make sense of their often-conflicting images, sounds, and messages. This course challenges participants to read music videos as texts by engaging with their visual and auditory materials. We will explore how the gender, race, and class of video participants shapes meaning, as well as how pacing and editing contribute to (or detract from) a narrative flow. We will also consider the music video in relation to notions of stardom and celebrity, and will speculate on the future of the music video amid drastic changes in the production and marketing of media. The second portion of the course applies these analytical skills to a wide variety of media, including video games, live concert films, film and television music placements, television title sequences and end credits, user generated content, YouTube, remixes and more. Course Materials: There is one required textbook available for free via USC’s electronic Ebook access: Carol Vernallis’ Experiencing Music Video: Aesthetics and Cultural Context (New York: Columbia University Press, 2004).

  • Tyler Perry – the Trailblazer Award Waco Theater Center, 2019
TYLER PERRY – THE TRAILBLAZER AWARD WACO THEATER CENTER, 2019 On Saturday, June 1, 2019, actor, playwright and filmmaker Tyler Perry will receive The Trailblazer Award at WACO Theater Center’s Wearable Art Gala in Los Angeles. Perry’s inspirational journey from the hard streets of New Orleans to the heights of Hollywood's A-list is the stuff of American legend. Born into poverty and raised in a household scarred by abuse, Perry fought from a young age to find the strength, faith and perseverance that would later form the foundations of his much-acclaimed plays, films, books and shows. It was a simple piece of advice from Oprah Winfrey that set Perry's career in motion. Encouraged to keep a diary of his daily thoughts and experiences, he began writing a series of soul-searching letters to himself. The letters, full of pain and in time, forgiveness, became a healing catharsis. His writing inspired a musical, I Know I've Been Changed, and in 1992, Perry gathered his life's savings in hopes of staging it for sold out crowds. He spent all the money but the people never came, and Perry once again came face to face with the poverty that had plagued his youth. He spent months sleeping in seedy motels and his car but his faith - in God and, in turn, himself - only got stronger. He forged a powerful relationship with the church, and kept writing. In 1998 his perseverance paid off and a promoter booked I Know I've Been Changed for a limited run at a local church-turned-theatre.

Introduction This study investigates the effect of a movie’s racial The underrepresentation of minorities in Hollywood composition on three aspects of its performance: ticket films has long been an issue of social discussion and sales, critical reception, and audience satisfaction. Movies discontent. According to the Census Bureau, minorities featuring minority actors are classified as either composed 37.4% of the U.S. population in 2013, up ‘nonwhite films’ or ‘black films,’ with black films defined from 32.6% in 2004.3 Despite this, a study from USC’s as movies featuring predominantly black actors with Media, Diversity, & Social Change Initiative found that white actors playing peripheral roles. • ABSTRACT by John Nyrere Frazier for Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow Is Enuf Is a Choreopoem Performa
ABSTRACT FOR COLORED GIRLS WHO HAVE CONSIDERED SUICIDE WHEN THE RAINBOW IS ENUF: LIVING IN THE WORD AN EXAMINATION OF THE TEXT AND TRADITIONAL PERFORMANCES OF FOR COLORED GIRLS… AS A STUDY FOR A MULTICULTURAL PRODUCTION by John Nyrere Frazier for colored girls who have considered suicide when the rainbow is enuf is a choreopoem performance play written and developed by Ntozake Shange. The piece grew out of an artistic collective which included Asians, Black Americans, Northern Continental Indigenes Peoples, European Americans, and Puerto Rican. The original west coast production included both Puerto Ricans and Asians. I believe that, that casting choice was as deliberate as Shange’s choices of language and content. Those multicultural women were bodied cultural references. In its move and further development, though, the casting changed to only include Black American women; narrowing the works physicalized cultural references. The major focus of my paper is to reconnect with Shange’s original casting choices as reasoning for re-widening casting and by extension, bodied cultural reference. My purpose is to lay the foundation for a return to the author’s original cultural intentions for the play which I assert were to write and perform a feminist piece that presented the lives and cultures of many “different kinds” (ethnicities/ cultures/ nationalities) of women. In addition, through the bodied references in the production, I intend to apply the work to the lives of more than just Black American and African American women; using the play as a feminist connective tissue between different women and differing feminisms that are all fighting again female oppression.
