Ta se riznica naπe iseljeniËke pisane rijeËi uspjeπno prezentirala u sklopu ovogodiπnje pre- stiæne Meunarodne izloæbe knjiga Interliber u Zagrebu, pa joj je s pravom pripao najveÊi broj priloga MatiËina godiπnjaka. Izloæba je ponovno otvorila stara nerijeπena pitanja dostupnosti autora iz iseljeniπtva Ëitateljima u Hrvatskoj, ne samo zbog jeziËne barijere meu razliËitim dijelovima nacionalnoga korpusa. Procesi kulturne integracije hrva- tskoga izvandomovinstva i matiËnoga naroda, nakon uspostave hrvatske dræavne neovi- snosti devedesetih godina proπloga stoljeÊa, zasigurno donose svoje plodove, no iselje- niπtvo s pravom oËekuje viπe. Najpoæeljnija je dvosmjerna komunikacija, dakle ne samo ona iz iseljeniπtva prema domovini nego i ona iz domovine prema iseljeniπtvu. Vaæan dio te komunikacije bila je, jest i bit Êe pisana rijeË. Hrvatski iseljeniËki zbornik 2006. sa saæecima na engleskome i πpanjolskome jeziku ima 8 tematskih cjelina, koje se sastoje od 34 samostalna autorska priloga, a ima ele- ktroniËku inaËicu na globalnoj mreæi na adresi http://www.matis.hr/zbornik. Tematske cjeline Znaci vremena, Baπtina, KroatistiËki obzori, Dijaspora, Mostovi, Duhovnost, Znanost, te Nove knjige bogate su raznorodnim tekstovima o naπim uglednim knjiæe- vnicima, glazbenicima i plesnim umjetnicima iz svijeta. Nastavljaju se priËe o vrhu- nskim hrvatskim znanstvenicima koji su, nakon πkolovanja u domovini, ostvarili za- paæenu meunarodnu afirmaciju. Hrvatsko iseljeniπtvo je dalo veliki doprinos uspostavi samostalne hrvatske dræave, pa mu pripada znaËajno mjesto u suvremenoj hrvatskoj povijesti. Povijesne teme iz æivota hrvatskoga naroda u zemlji i hrvatskim zajednicama u svijetu oduvijek su bile prisutne na stranicama naπih kalendarskih knjiga. Ove su ih godine ispisali vrsni struËnjaci po- put dr. Ljubomira AntiÊa, dr. Ivana »izmiÊa, dr. Josipa JurËeviÊa, dr. Josipa ©entije iz Zagreba ili pak povjesniËarke Marije D. Æic iz New Yorka. Knjiæevnik i publicist Marko DekiÊ iz Budimpeπte priredio je opseæni razgovor s dr. Mijom KaragiÊem, predsje- dnikom Hrvatske dræavne samouprave u Maarskoj, koji je stekao bogata iskustva, izgra- dio razgranate druπtvene i kulturne veze s hrvatskim zajednicama u Austriji, Italiji, Makedoniji, Rumunjskoj, »eπkoj, SlovaËkoj, Srbiji i Crnoj Gori pa je izuzetno zani- mljivi sugovornik na temu statusa hrvatskih autohtonih manjina u EU. 5 INTRODUCTION Publishing in the Croatian emigration is varied and appears, with more than a century of tradition behind it, in the Croatian, English, Spanish, German, French and other languages in thirty countries on all continents. This treasury of our emigration’s written word was successfully presented at this year’s prestigious Zagreb Interliber Internation- al Book Fair, earning it the lion’s share of contributions to Matica’s Almanac. The exhi- bition opened again some old unresolved issues of Croatian reader’s access to authors in the emigration, a problem existing not only because of the language barriers present between various parts of the Croatian national corpus. The processes of cultural inte- gration between the emigrant and Homeland Croatian nation, in the wake of the estab- lishment of an independent state in the 1990’s, is certainly contributing its fruits but the emigration justly expects more. Two-way communication is most to be desired. Not only, therefore, communication from the emigration towards the Homeland but also from the Homeland towards the emigration. An important part of that communication has been, is and will continue to be, the written word. The 2006 Croatian Emigrant Almanac with summaries in the English and Spanish lan- guages has 8 thematic sections made up of 34 independent contributions and is avail- able in electronic issue on the World Wide Web at http://www.matis.hr/zbornik. The thematic sections: Signs of the Times, Heritage, Croatian Philology Horizons, The Dias- pora, Bridges, Spirituality, Research and New Books are rich in a wide variety of texts covering eminent Croatian writers, musicians and dance artists from around the world. The saga of top Croatian researchers who have, after completing their education in the Homeland attained noted international affirmation, continues. Croatia’s emigrants made a massive contribution to establishing an independent Croat- ian state earning it a significant place in recent Croatian history. Historical themes from the life of the Croatian nation at home and in the Croatian communities abroad have always been present on the pages of our yearbooks. They have been written this year by capable experts like Ljubomir AntiÊ, Ivan »izmiÊ, Josip JurËeviÊ, Josip ©entija out of Zagreb or by historian Marija D. Æic out of New York. Writer and publisher Marko DekiÊ from Budapest has prepared an in-depth interview with Mijo KaragiÊ, the presi- dent of the Croatian National Self-Government in Hungary, who has gained a wealth of experience and created a wide network of social and cultural ties with the Croatian communities in Austria, Italy, Macedonia, Romania, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Serbia and Montenegro and is as such an interesting collocutor on the subject of the status of the Croatian indigenous minorities in the EU. 6 INTRODUCCIÓN La actividad editorial de la emigración croata es muy variada y tiene más de un siglo de tradición en el croata, inglés, español, alemán, francés y otras lenguas en treinta países del mundo y en todos los continentes. El tesoro de la palabra escrita por nuestra emigra- ción se presentó con éxito en la prestigiosa Exposición internacional de libros Interli- ber en Zagreb y con razón le perteneció el mayor número de anexos del Anuario de la Fundación para la Emigración Croata. La exposición abrió de nuevo las antiguas y no- resueltas preguntas sobre la accesibilidad de los autores de la emigración a los lectores en Croacia, no sólo a causa de la barrera del idioma entre las diferentes partes del corpus nacional. Los procesos de la integración cultural de los croatas fuera de la patria y el pueblo materno, después del establecimiento de la independencia del estado croata en los años noventa del siglo pasado, seguramente trajeron sus frutos, pero la emigra- ción con razón espera más. Lo más deseable es la comunicación recíproca, o sea, no sólo aquella de la emigración hacia la patria, sino también aquella de la patria hacia la emigración. Un importante papel en esta comunicación fue, es y será la palabra escrita. El Anuario para la Emigración Croata 2006 con resúmenes en inglés y en español, cuenta con 8 unidades temáticas que comprenden 34 anexos de autores independientes y se publicó en forma electrónica en la red global en la dirección de internet http:// www.matis.hr/zbornik. Las unidades temáticas: Los Signos del Tiempo, Herencia, Hori- zontes Croatísticos, Diáspora, Puentes, Espiritualidad, Ciencia y Nuevos Libros son los ricos y variados textos sobre nuestros destacados escritores, músicos y bailarines en el mundo. Continúan los relatos sobre los científicos croatas cumbres, quienes, después de terminar su educación en la madre patria, fueron reconocidos internacionalmente. La emigración croata dio una gran contribución al establecimiento del estado croata independiente así que le pertenece un lugar destacado en la historia contemporánea croata. Los temas históricos de la vida del pueblo croata en el país y en las comunidades croatas del resto del mundo han estado desde siempre presentes en las páginas de nue- stros anuarios. He has lived in England between 1971 and 1978, where he developed his apprenticeship in theatre direction and opera regie, and presented his first stagings. He assisted to workshops run by Lee Strasberg, Luca Ronconi, Marcel Marechal and Geoffrey Reeves. In the opera field, he followed rehearsals of productions by Giorgio Strehler, Luca Ronconi, Johannes Schaaf, Benno Besson and John Copley. From 1980 onwards he has been working in Buenos Aires where he staged many prose- theatre and opera productions, and developed his work as teacher of acting and directing.     JAVIER WEINTRAUB Argentine versatile violinist started his studies at the age of 8 at the National Conservatory “López Buchardo” in Buenos Aires, from which he received the degree of National Professor of Music specialized in Violin. His teachers were Cristina Monasterolo, Ljerko Spiller and Rafael Gintoli. He took part in many chamber and symphonic orchestras as Orquesta de Cámara Crescendo, Orquesta Sinfónica Juvenil de Radio Nacional, Orquesta Sinfónica Franco-Argentina, Orchestre de Chambre de Lyon in France, Orquesta de Cámara Scherzo. Javier performed widely as a soloist, playing many of the most well-known pieces from the violin repertoire, like the Mendelssohn violin concertos, Tchaikovsky, Vivaldi’s Four Seasons, Bach concertos, etc. In 1996 he obtains through public contest his currently position as first violin at National Orchestra of Argentine Music Juan de Dios Filiberto. From that moment, he started an intense activity as a Tango violinist, performing concerts with many important groups in the Buenos Aires music scene such as El Arranque, Decarísimo, Osvaldo Piro’s nonet, Fernando Marzan’s sextet, Weintraub-Greco duet, among others. He took part in important Tango shows such as Rojo Tango at the Faena Hotel, Tango Dance Premiun, presented in 60 different cities in Japan and “Los Ojos de la Traición” - a Tango Opera presented at the Auditorium at Hotel Sheraton, co-directed by Verónica Vidán and co-written with Fausto Lomba. Between 1997 and 2013 Javier toured the United States, Japan, Spain, Germany, Switzerland, England, Italy, France, Sweden, Holland, Finland, Venezuela, Chile, Colombia, Vietnam and Cuba, among other countries, presenting Argentine music to the foremost music halls of those countries.

    Olga Pinchuk (Lola Pinchuk) Olga is an Argentinean violinist, born in Kazakhstan. She began to study music encouraged by her father and led by her mother, the cellist and pedagogue Tatiana Kachanova. Being three-years old, she began to study violin, successively learning from teachers Nina Nazimova, Lazar Bendersky, and Vera Nyezhentseva (in Ukraine). Later, she traveled to Argentina and, in Buenos Aires, she studied with maestro Szymsia Bajour; she currently optimizes her knowledge with maestro Oleg Pishenin. She graduated with high grades from the National Conservatory of Music of Buenos Aires "Carlos López Buchardo" (currently the UNA, National University of the Arts), with a title of Senior Professor in Music and as Graduate in Musical Arts, specialized in Violin. She has participated in major continuing education courses, with scholarships granted by the Alberto Lysy and the El Sonido y el Tiempo Internacional foundations, led by maestros Ljerko Spiller, José Luis Juri and Daniel Goldstein. She also participated in the Martha Argerich Festival of Buenos Aires, editions 2001 and 2002. She took part in several orchestral ensembles, some of them being: Teatro Colón Permanent Orchestra, Tango Orchestra of the city of Buenos Aires, Teatro Colón Philharmonic Orchestra, Provincial Center for Arts of the Teatro Argentino de La Plata Permanent Orchestra, La Plata Municipality Chamber Orchestra, Municipal Symphony Orchestra of Avellaneda, Teatro Colón Academic Orchestra, and Cámara Mayo Orchestra. She performed at the most important halls in Argentina and Brazil, as well as in cities of the United Kingdom and Germany. She recorded her first CD, that is completely focused on Argentinean music for violin and piano.

    This first-ever report rating individual European Union countries on how they face up their Holocaust pasts was published on January 25, 2019 to coincide with UN Holocaust Remembrance Day. Researchers from Yale and Grinnell Colleges travelled throughout Europe to conduct the research. Representatives from the European Union of Progressive Judaism (EUPJ) have endorsed their work. Key Findings ● Many European Union governments are rehabilitating World War II collaborators and war criminals while minimising their own guilt in the attempted extermination of Jews. ● Revisionism is worst in new Central European members - Poland, Hungary, Croatia and Lithuania. ● But not all Central Europeans are moving in the wrong direction: two exemplary countries living up to their tragic histories are the Czech Republic and Romania. The Romanian model of appointing an independent commission to study the Holocaust should be duplicated. ● West European countries are not free from infection - Italy, in particular, needs to improve. ● In the west, Austria has made a remarkable turn-around while France stands out for its progress in accepting responsibility for the Vichy collaborationist government. ● Instead of protesting revisionist excesses, Israel supports many of the nationalist and revisionist governments. By William Echikson As the world marks the United Nations Holocaust Remembrance Day on January 27, European governments are rehabilitating World War II collaborators and war criminals while minimising their own guilt in the attempted extermination of Jews. This Holocaust Remembrance Project finds that Hungary, Poland, Croatia, and the Baltics are the worst offenders. Driven by feelings of victimhood and fears of accepting refugees, and often run by nationalist autocratic governments, these countries have received red cards for revisionism.

    ‘TODAY, THE SITUATION WITH JEWS IN CROATIA IS JUST UGLY’ FROM DIVISION TO PLURALISM IN CROATIAN JEWISH COMMUNITY By Biljana Lalic Submitted to Central European University Department of Nationalism Studies In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts Supervisor: Professor András Kovács Budapest, Hungary CEU eTD Collection 2016 ABSTRACT The aim of this thesis is to demonstrate that the current situation of the division in the Croatian Jewish community goes beyond the binary discourse of revival vs. disappearance of Jewish communal life in post-communist Europe. The emergence of Bet Israel, an Orthodox religious community in Croatia, in 2006 serves as a case study for examining the impact of internal and external determinates on the group(s) making process. The methodology employed to argue the hypothesis involves qualitative research conducted in Zagreb, in April 2016, with three generations of Croatian Jews. Findings of the research propose that there is a strong need for belonging to a significant Jewish group among Jews in Croatia. Expressed in different institutional options, it reflects the plurality of groupness crystallization processes.
