It is accompanied by Brough Superior SS100 TO1891, the first production Alpine Grand Sport No 803. David Bingham writes about the car’s restoration in this issue. The rear cover from The Autocar , 27th December 1935, is the fifth and final T&T advert showing a Railton Ranalah Sports Saloon. This advert has a new image and depicts a car with front quarter lights, internal vents to the scuttle louvres and a blank section in the 100% rear- facing bonnet louvres. There is no mascot nor any visible sunroof drains. For the first time the artwork is signed (Green(?) ’35). Reid Railton’s rôle as T&T’s Chief Engineer is again referenced (see correspondence on page 26). R.O.C. We are indebted to Graeme Wilkins for the artwork which made this possible. Many years ago I used to read Design magazine which frequently reported changes to well known company logos. These were always rigorously controlled with a manual dictating where they could occur on a company’s products and literature. This was to ensure that the corporate identity was not diluted in any way – a discipline lacking with Railton Cars. Prompted by Graeme I looked at the Railton offerings in the 1930s and there is a huge variety of logos. Normally these had fairly minor differences to the font, serifs, the letter spacings and the graphic surrounding the text. However in one year there was even a complete change of font in the brochures in an attempt to appear more modern. Graeme’s version is an amalgam of contemporary logos informed by his long experience in graphic design. Notable is the spacing of the L & T where the horizontals now overlap. By virtue of the letter shapes, period versions which do not overlap appear to have an abnormally large gap between these letters. Neil Thorp CLOSING DATE FOR CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE OCT / DEC BULLETIN IS 8TH NOVEMBER. SECRETARY’S NOTES Well at least the V.S.C.C. made it to Shelsley Walsh, albeit somewhat later in the season than originally billed. Motorsport “behind closed doors” turned out to involve a competitors’ “bubble” with temperature checks on arrival, social distancing in the paddock, and no spectators in sight. Nevertheless, August 8th turned out to be a lovely sunny day in the Teme valley to welcome both our Editor, in the Spikins Singer Bantam, and John Fack, exercising the L.S.T. (see report on page 25). Among the Shelsley Specials the famous “Spider” inevitably stole the limelight, achieving a time some six seconds quicker than that of its creator Basil Davenport when he had set a new hill record 94 years previously. The track surface in the twenties was, of course, very different from today’s carefully maintained tarmac. More valid is comparison of how the L.S.T. performs on its visits to Shelsley these days with the time set by Charles Follett in taking the Sports Challenge Trophy in 1938. On this August afternoon John Fack’s 43.6 seconds bettered the 1938 time by just under one second. The comparison led me back to the occasion when, in the October 1972 Motor Sport, Bill Boddy wrote of Charles Follett:- 4 “He quite liked the Railton and took on the agency. His black 1935 Light Sports Railton became a very famous car indeed. As first used in competition it went well, Oats having hastily revised the exhaust pattern and later, with a special head, it was one of the most versatile cars ever. Its achievements have been well documented elsewhere:
