2011 Event Report “The right crowd” was part of the slogan that was used to promote Brooklands. This weekend the ‘Right Crowd’ was at Mallory Park for the 6th Festival of 1000 Bikes to be held at this delightful 1.35 mile Leicestershire circuit. Over 22,000 Enthusiasts flocked thorough the gates for the three days of nostalgia and excitement. There were the sights, the sounds and the smells of the iconic machines of yesteryear combined with the spectacle of the stars of yesteryear strutting their stuff on the machines that made them famous and the unique opportunity to mingle freely with them in the ‘Race Paddock’ (Try that at any other prestigious 2 or 4 wheel event!) More than 1,200 enthusiasts had the opportunity to exercise their own machines which ranged from 25cc to 1,500 cc and from 1902 to 2011 in a slickly co-ordinated series of more than 50 track sessions over the two days with Sunday being reserved for ‘Race Machinery’ The weather was kind, the beer tent was excellent and the “Paddock Cafe’s” famous breakfasts were in great demand. Evening entertainment included ‘ The Classic Racer’ magazine ‘Stars on Stage’ hosted by Charlie Williams and a live band in the marquee on both Friday and Saturday but for many it was an opportunity to meet old friends, make new ones and generally chew the fat over a few mugs of Horlicks.... The autojumble was interesting and the 50 strong “Avenue of Clubs was very popular–with imaginative and ‘educational’ displays that welcomed the thousands of enthusiasts who thronged the stands So many highlights to remember, but Kenny Roberts “on the back wheel” or the “Ago versus Cooper” celebration of the 40th anniversary of their ‘Race of the Year’ battle here at Mallory has to stand out – together with the spectacle of the NMM Norton Rotaries in full cry and the extraordinary sights and sounds of the VMCC Sprint Section on the Kirby Straight on Sunday. Keep an eye open for the 2012 date if you missed it. “King” Kenny Roberts signs autographs prior to taking to the track. The VMCC Festival of 1000 Bikes gives 4 awards every year for best cafe racer, best post war machine, best Pre-war machine and best Club stand from within the massive 50 strong Ave of Clubs. The 2011 awards presented by VMCC Past President Ian Young were as follows- | The Classic Racer award for the best club stand was presented to the National Autocycle & Cyclemotor Club Ron & Jeanette Perkins received the Old Bike Mart trophy for the best post-war machine for their 1971 BSA Thunderbolt The Classic Motorcycle trophy for the best pre-war machine went to Ian Sisson for his 1935 1150cc Brough Superior The Ace Cafe Trophy for Best cafe racer went to Ian Alcock for his Moto Guzzi “V7 Racer” Want to know more? THE VINTAGE MOTOR CYCLE CLUB FESTIVAL OF 1000 BIKES TRIALS Saturday 09/07/2011-11.00am-3.30pm (See event map for location). Permit No. AMCA/CT/2691 The Taverners have been putting on Vintage Trials in the Leicestershire area for many years from the time when Vintage (as in Pre 1930 machines including “flat tankers”) were used. More “modern” machines became eligible as the VMCC’s 25 year eligibility rule moved on with a colonial class for (virtually) Road Machines which ran for a time alongside the Trials Bikes on a modified course. When the 25 year rule reached 1957 it was decided to keep this as a cut-off date for eligibility, with machines up to 1965 invited as “guests”. We aim to try to encourage the continued use of the girder/rigid and tele/rigid with lesser entry fees and courses not so demanding as most Trials. We run a winter series October to April of 7 Trials at various venues around Leicestershire many on old disused railway sites. These courses feature not many rocks or too many death defying sections with the aim of encouraging older machines to be brought along. We have entries from riders past three score years and ten, alongside youngsters from 10 years upward. It’s often a family affair with many Fathers, Sons & Granddads taking part plus our very good young lady rider. Machinery taking part is very varied from 600cc Levis to all sorts of smelly Two Strokes, (hopefully they will graduate to a nice four stroke), with AJ’S, Bullets, Beezers, Fanny Barnetts, Trophy’s, James’, Ariels etc. In June every year we also run a non-competitive trial for any age of machine to encourage anybody to “come and have a go”. Make sure you come and see us making the best use of our “mud pluggers” on the Saturday of the Festival weekend in & around the motocross course.
