    The Orange Times Bruce McLaren Trust June / July 2014, Issue #2 Farewell Sir Jack 1926 - 2014 Along with the motorsport fraternity worldwide I was extremely saddened to th hear of Sir Jack’s recent passing on the 19 May. The McLaren family and Jack have shared a wonderful life-long friendship, starting with watching his early racing days in New Zealand, then Pop McLaren purchasing the Bobtail Cooper from Jack after the NZ summer racing season of 1957. For the following season of 1958, Jack made the McLaren Service Station in Remuera his base and brought the second Cooper with him from the UK for Bruce to drive in the NZIGP which culminated in Bruce being awarded the Celebrating 50 Years of “Driver to Europe”. Jack became his mentor and close friend and by 1959 McLaren Racing Bruce joined him as teammate for the Cooper Racing Team. The rest, as we say, is history but the friendship lived on and the BM Trust Following on from their Tasman Series was delighted to host Jack in New Zealand for a week of motorsport memories success, the fledgling BMMR Team set about in 2003 with Jack requesting that the priority of the trip was to be a visit to their very first sports car race with the Zerex see his “NZ Mum” Ruth McLaren, who, by then, was a sprightly 97 years old. th Special – on April 11 1964 at Oulton Park and I shared a very special hour with the two of them together and the love and this was a DNF/oil pressure.

    2010 Event Report The best ‘Mallory’ yet! The stars, the participants and the weather all combined to give the record crowds a weekend to remember. The VMCC Festival of 1000 Bikes is now an accepted and an essential fixture on the motorcyclist’s calendar. We now talk of “Mallory” or “1000 Bikes” and every motorcyclist knows what you mean. This opportunity for the owners of both road and track machines to experience riding on a genuine race circuit at their own pace and in the company of like-minded enthusiasts is so attractive that the event was over-subscribed yet again. But it’s more than that. It is now one of those occasions where you are likely to meet everyone you ever knew in your world of motorcycling. Where you see the famous in informal and accessible situations and where you make new acquaintances, see unique and/or rare machines, where you learn more about motorcycle history and technology and where you are able to savour the sights, the sounds and the aromas of machines of a bygone age. Whilst the key attractions are out on the track, the exponents of Vintage Grass-track and the more relaxed devotees of the “Pre-1965 Trials” put on demonstrations of their activities in the out- field areas and the VMCC Sprint section staged dramatic demonstrations of their skills to a vast and appreciative crowd on the track at Sunday Lunch time. Sunday afternoon saw the ‘Past Masters’ led by Freddie Spencer on his Honda RS500 and Carl Fogarty MBE on his Ducati 996 showing us the skills, the style and the panache that made them so successful.

    500 Owners Association Circuit Racing Championship 2018 Season Race Pack 500 Owners Association Circuit Racing Championship 2018 Season Race Pack Introduction 2018 sees a five-event calendar that includes two double headers. The club continues with its bought race programme; a total of four this season, with three events being organised with the VSCC and additionally, the Zandvoort Historic Grand Prix. A new venture for this season is our first race with UKM at Mallory Park on 10th June where we are not buying the race but are receiving the race entries. Once again numbers are key to maintaining the viability of the clubs circuit racing programme and a minimum grid size of 16 cars is essential, although with our membership and race ready cars, there is every reason that gird numbers could exceed 20 at every event. Because of the additional cost of the Zandvoort races, a minimum grid size of 24 is required to break even, but we hoping that the grid will be bolstered by a number of our French, Dutch and Scandinavian friends. Race entry fee In order to break even for the season we have set the entry fee at £240 for each entry for the three UK “bought races”. The UKM Mallory Park double header is priced at a competitive £345 with the additional incentive of a £20 early bird discount for any entries paid for by the 30th April, so get your entries in soon! For Zandvoort, the additional cost of the two races requires a higher entry fee of £350. Younger drivers In our ongoing attempt to get younger drivers competing in 500’s we are continuing to offer a 50% discount to the entry fee for the “bought “races The young driver definition is as follows: “A paid up member (Family or individual) that is 29 years of age or younger at the time of the first race of the season – For 2018 that date is May 19th 2018.
