Hindu Astronomy
HINDU ASTRONOMY BY W. BRENNAND, WITH THIRTEEN ILLUSTRATIONS AND NUMEROUS DIAGRAMS. London : Published by Chas. Straker & Sons, Ltd., Bishopsgate Avenue, E.C. 1896. S JUL 3 1 1974 fysm OF Wf B-7M Printed by Chas. Straker & Sons, Ltd., BisiiorsoATE Avenue, London, E.G. PREFACE. It is perhaps expected that some reason should be given for tho publication of this work, though it may appear inadequate. Force of circumstances; rather than deliberate choice on my part, impelled it now that it has been I cannot but feel how ; and, accomplished, imperfect the production is. A lengthened residence in India led me to become interested in the study of the ancient mathematical works of the Hindus. This study was frequently interrupted by official duties, and much information acquired in its course lias been for a time forgotten. Recent circumstances, and chiefly the interest displayed by my former pupils in a paper presented to the Royal Society on the same subject, has induced me to make an effort to regain the lost ground, and to gather together materials for a more extended work. Moreover, a conviction formed many years ago that the Hindus have not received the credit due to their literature and mathematical science from Europeans, and which has been strengthened by a renewal of my study of those materials, has led me also to a desire to put before the public their system of astronomy in as simple a maimer as possible, with the object of enabling those interested in the matter to form their own judgment upon it, and, possibly, to extend further investigations in the subject. -

Mill Valley Oral History Program a Collaboration Between the Mill Valley Historical Society and the Mill Valley Public Library
Mill Valley Oral History Program A collaboration between the Mill Valley Historical Society and the Mill Valley Public Library JIMMY DILLON An Oral History Interview Conducted by Debra Schwartz in 2015 © 2015 by the Mill Valley Public Library TITLE: Oral History of Jimmy Dillon INTERVIEWER: Debra Schwartz DESCRIPTION: Transcript, 36 pages INTERVIEW DATE: October 26th, 2015 In this musically infused and engagingly narrated oral history, guitarist, songwriter, and musical educator Jimmy Dillon recounts his devotion to music since the age of 12 when he decided he wanted to be a guitarist. Born in 1951 in Los Angeles, “in the golden age of rock ‘n’ roll,” Jimmy moved to Michigan with his family as a teenager, where he started gigging with his first band, The Fugitives. In 1969, after finishing high school, he moved back to California with his sister Chloe, settling in Sausalito. Jimmy dates his “love affair with Marin County” back to this moment. He recalls the music scene of the early 1970s in San Francisco and Marin, as well as his own first bona fide Marin band, The Edge. Jimmy recounts his 20-year musical relationship with Clarence Clemons and his deep love of the blues, which prompted him to write a play (or “bluesical”) entitled Ascension of the Blues, documenting the West African origins of the blues, its maturation in the United States, and subsequent diffusion throughout the world. Throughout this oral history, Jimmy describes how his career in music has taken him around the world, how he moved back to Michigan and later to Maui, but how, through all these migrations and displacements, Mill Valley — and Mt. -

Right Ascension - Wikipedia
12/2/2018 Right ascension - Wikipedia Right ascension Right ascension (abbreviated RA; symbol α) is the angular distance measured eastward along the celestial equator from the Sun at the March equinox to the hour circle of the point above the earth in question.[1] When paired with declination, these astronomical coordinates specify the direction of a point on the celestial sphere (traditionally called in English the skies or the sky) in the equatorial coordinate system. An old term, right ascension (Latin: ascensio recta[2]) refers to the ascension, or the point on the celestial equator that rises with any celestial object as seen from Earth's equator, where the celestial equator intersects the horizon at a right angle. It contrasts with oblique ascension, the point on the celestial equator that rises with any celestial object as seen from most latitudes on Earth, where the celestial equator intersects the horizon at an oblique angle.[3] Contents Explanation Symbols and abbreviations Effects of precession History See also Right ascension and declination as seen on the Notes and references inside of the celestial sphere. The primary direction External links of the system is the March equinox, the ascending node of the ecliptic (red) on the celestial equator (blue). Right ascension is measured eastward up to 24h along the celestial equator from the primary Explanation direction. Right ascension is the celestial equivalent of terrestrial longitude. Both right ascension and longitude measure an angle from a primary direction (a zero point) on an equator. Right ascension is measured from the sun at the March equinox i.e. -

Kapa La B Yantra at Sawai Jai Singh's Jaipur Observatory
Indian Journal of History of Science, 48.4 (2013) 583-588 KAPA– LA B YANTRA AT SAWAI JAI SINGH’S JAIPUR OBSERVATORY VIRENDRA N SHARMA* (Received 17 February 2013) At the Jaipur observatory of Sawai Jai Singh, the Jantar Mantar, there is an instrument known as Kapāla B which is not meant for observing but for graphically transforming horizon system of coordinates into equatorial system and vice versa. In literature the instrument is inaccurately described. The object of this paper is to rectify these inaccuracies. Key words: Kapāla B, Kapāla yantras, Jaipur observatory, Jai Singh, Jantar Mantar, Coordinate transformation, Garrett, Bhavan, Soonawala, Kaye, Dhama, Sharma, V.N. Sharma, Virendra N. Sharma INTRODUCTION At the Jaipur observatory of Sawai Jai Singh, the Jantar Mantar, there is a pair of instruments on a platform, known as Kapāla or Kapāli yantras. The instruments are called Kapālas because they remotely resemblance the brain-cover (Kapāla) of a human being. Of the two instruments, the one toward the west on platform is termed Kapāla A and its sister unit to the east, Kapāla B.1 Kapāla B (Fig. 1) is the only instrument at the Jaipur observatory which is not meant for observing. Instead, its object is to transform graphically horizon system of coordinates into equatorial system and vice versa for the latitude of Jaipur. The transformation implies converting the zenith distance and azimuth of an object into its corresponding declination and hour angle respectively. These transformations require generally the application of the formulae of spherical trigonometry, which may involve lengthy calculations.2 Kapāla B, in theory at least, is an ingenious device as it eliminates these * Professor Emeritus of Astronomy and Physics, University of Wisconsin Fox Valley, 1478, Midway Road, Menasha, Wisconsin 54952, USA, E-mail: [email protected] 584 INDIAN JOURNAL OF HISTORY OF SCIENCE Fig. -

I'd been rooting around the History Department where, at age forty-one and only twenty years behind schedule, I'd finished my undergraduate degree. I had the academic bug and I wanted to move on to graduate school. Professor David Montejano was kind enough to let me sit in on one of his graduate courses to allow me to get a feel for what graduate work involved. As the seminar wound down, he suggested that I check out the AMS program on the third floor of Garrison Hall. I looked through the courses the department had been offering over the last few semesters and after noticing subjects like film history, jazz, a large collection of topics in popular culture, and seminars dealing with drugs, alcohol, and the beat generation, I knew I'd found a new home.
