  • Les Miserables
April 2015 | No. 38 AbingdonNews LES MISERABLES .... The whole cast was incredible; and the crew, “ from lighting to stage direction. You would never have known it was a school production. ” Many congratulations to everyone, what talent. “ (tweeted by Christopher Biggins) ” Wow, wow and wow again! “ I can’t do it justice with words. Staggeringly” brilliant. “ ” www.abingdon.org.uk Abingdon News Art adorns Science A stunning artwork standing 10m tall and spanning the three floors of the new Science Centre, due to open in the autumn, has been commissioned from sculptor Matthew Lane Sanderson. The sculpture, made possible by a donation from Old Abingdonian, Martin Iredale and family, will rise through the stairwell depicting Biology then Physics and finally Chemistry on each of the corresponding floors. As you climb the stairs the sculpture will reveal a fresh perspective at every level. Talking about his creation Matthew says, “Standing as tall as a house and over a ton in weight, this sculpture could be considered Big! Whilst its purpose and obvious presence will be clear, it will hold some secrets also. Semi-transparent and with no solid volumes, there are some conceptual ‘keys to life’ within the structure and discernable for those who are prepared to find them. By identifying these keys, and linking them to each other, I hope all who visit the Science Centre may enjoy both the visual and cerebral challenge presented for years to come. It is my aim, not merely to decorate a building, but to Felicity Lusk inspire many generations of pupils to take up the challenges of science at Abingdon.” to retire Felicity Lusk has announced that she will retire as Head of the Abingdon Foundation at the end of August 2016.

Save Kids’ TV Campaign British children’s television - on the BBC, Channel 4, ITV and Five - has been widely acknowledged as amongst the most creative and innovative in the world. But changes in children’s viewing patterns, and the ban on certain types of advertising to children, are putting huge strains on commercial broadcasters. Channel 4 no longer makes children’s programmes and ITV (until recently the UK’s second largest kids’ TV commissioner) has ceased all new children’s production. They are deserting the children’s audience because it doesn’t provide enough revenue. Channel FIVE have cut back their children’s programming too. The international channels - Disney, Nickelodeon and Cartoon Network - produce some programming here, but not enough to fill the gap, and much of that has to be international in its focus so that it can be used on their channels in other territories. The recent Ofcom report on the health of children’s broadcasting in the UK has revealed that despite the appearance of enormous choice in children’s viewing, the many channels available offer only a tiny number of programmes produced in the UK with British kids’ interests at their core. The figures are shocking – only 1% of what’s available to our kids is new programming made in the UK. • Piers Morgan Outrage Over Brandpool Celebrity Trust Survey Submitted By: Friday's Media Group Monday, 19 April 2010
Piers Morgan outrage over Brandpool celebrity trust survey Submitted by: Friday's Media Group Monday, 19 April 2010 Piers Morgan has expressed outrage at being voted the sixth least trusted celebrity brand ambassador in a survey by ad agency and creative content providers Brandpool. Writing in his Mail On Sunday column, the Britain’s Got Talent judge questioned the logic of the poll, which named the celebrities the public would most and least trust as the faces of an ad campaign. But Brandpool has hit back at Morgan for failing to recognise the purpose of its research. Morgan, who also neglected to credit Brandpool as the source of the study, said: “No real surprises on the Most Trusted list, which is led by ‘national treasures’ such as David Attenborough, Stephen Fry, Richard Branson and Michael Parkinson. “As for the Least Trusted list, I find the logic of this one quite odd. Katie Price, for example, comes top, yet I would argue that she’s one of the most trustworthy people I know… Then I suddenly pop up at No 6, an outrage which perhaps only I feel incensed about. Particularly as that smiley little rodent Russell Brand slithers in at No 7. Making me supposedly less trustworthy than a former heroin junkie and sex addict.” Morgan was also surprised to see Simon Cowell, Cheryl Cole, Sharon Osbourne, Tom Cruise and Jonathan Ross in the Least Trusted list. However, he agreed with the inclusion of John Terry, Ashley Cole, Tiger Woods and Tony Blair, all of whom, he said, were “united by a common forked tongue”.

Building on previous theories of banter, I suggest that the composite nature of the phenomenon can usefully be analysed within an interactional pragmatic model, such as that proposed by Lecercle (1999). Using this model to analyse various episodes of Pointless, I seek to demonstrate that banter is created within a dynamic interpersonal process.
